Bike riding to STRENGTHEN knees before rose season!
Comments (8)Phyl - I'm almost 40 and have begun having problems with my knees too. No injury, but a lot of pain when I bend. I saw an orthopedist a few weeks ago who confirmed there is no arthritis, but I'm now seeing a physical therapist. They say my problem is that I need to strengthen my quad muscles so they've given me lots of exercises. Here a few that they've given me. You should ask your doctor if these might work for you. 1. Sit with your back against a wall or flat surface. Legs extended out in front of you. Contract your quad muscles, pressing the backs of your knees down into the floor. Hold each contraction for 5 seconds. Do 2 sets of 15. 2. In the same sitting position, bend your knees so that your feet are flat on the floor. Place a rolled up towel or pillow between your knees. Squeeze the towel and hold for 5 seconds. Again, do 2 sets of 15. 3. Lie flat on your back and do 30 leg lifts with your toes flexed (not pointed). Do each leg separately Don't hold the lift. Just make sure it's a slow, controlled lift that engages your quads. There are some others that they've given me, but they are more difficult to explain, but you can find many on-line. Look for ones that focus on building your quad muscles since those are the muscles that hold your kneecap in place as you bend, and will take pressure off of your knees and reduce your pain. Hope it helps - for your sake and mine. Hope...See MoreDo strong winds help strengthen a tree's root system?
Comments (31)It has been shown that norway spruces regularly exposed to strong winds develop a different cross-section of their major roots. The roots on unstressed trees have oval/circular cross-section while those of stressed trees have a T-shaped cross-section that improves their resistance to wind-throw. Biological systems (and most complex systems, also inanimate ones) develop in different ways in response to consistent stresses. Just as a plant develops a deeper root systems in response to droughts, or grows taller to reach canopy, I don't see what is so unbelievable in imagining how a plant will direct its resources to improve its structure, when repeatedly stressed by wind. What Tom mentioned is, I believe, also responsible for the phenomenon of the Fir Waves... Now, coming to the topic of the conversation, I believe these adaptations will take time to set in, and I think staking would make sense in that light. Also, staking means everything and nothing. I can stake a tree so that its trunk will not move by one inch. Or I can stake widely enough just so it won't topple. These two ways of staking must have completely different effects on how the plant will adapt to wind....See Moreugly fingernails
Comments (8)Before I started giving my nails some much needed attention, they too were rough, and splitting and brittle. I've always heard that emery boards, if not used properly, can actually cause nail damage, particularly if the boards are a bit worn on the edges. I got a Sally Hansen Ahead of the Curve Sapphire Nail File at WM and really like it. I'm 'thinking' that Walmart also has Hair and Nail Vitamins, though I'm not sure of what they contain that would be beneficial to nails. I've found too, that keeping something on my nails most of the time, really helps them. Everything I use is pretty neutral colored, so when it gets some age on it (chipping), it isn't unsightly like chipped 'colored' nails look. Once you notice a nail snagging on things, it is important to see what is causing the problem, and get it smoothed/filed, and get a coating of hardener or clear polish on it, asap. I've found that if I ignore a rough or splitting nail, I almost always regret it as it will end up tearing off. Good luck...Hopefully in time you will have some nice nails and be showing them off by wearing some rings....See MoreProblem with peeling fingernails
Comments (15)Graywings, I stopped the Evista because I do not like taking medicines. My primary insisted and I have taken it for about 3 or 4 years. She retired and I have told my new doctor that I don't want to take it. I am also doing more weight-bearing exercises. She agreed that we can give this a try, pending the outcome of my next bone density test in about a year. We'll see. Java, I don't think it is psoriatic arthritis. I have read about that and it is talking about separation from the nail bed and such. While protein and calcium probably have something to do with it, I think the main cause is probably chemicals from over polishing and dryness. It seems like I was removing and reapplying polish 2 or 3 times a week this winter. Then when the technician buffed my nails paper thin, it was really bad. Some of that polish was off by the next morning. Oakley and Peegee, with that overpriced kit I bought at the mall kiosk was a buffer. It is incredible how much my nails are shining. I keep using the oil that came with it. There is also a hand cream that I left in Florida for my friend to bring up as it was over 3 ounces. I will get that next week. I agree with all above who said I need to lay off the polish. Now that is killing me as I do not like my nails without it, but I know I need to stop at least until I get this mess grown out. Thanks again for all of your replies....See More- last yearlast modified: last yeardonna_loomis thanked rhizo_1 (North AL) zone 7
