Furniture rant/Unsolicited opinion

So, my SOs birthday just passed. He being the type of person who almost NEVER can come up with a present for himself, as he, like me, buys what he wants all year, once again gave me no help in choosing a gift.

So, I started brainstorming. The first thing I recalled is once, he called me from the plant he delivered his load to and told me about this "amazing" chair they has in their truck driver lounge that was "so comfortable.". He sent me a picture of it, and it was a raggedy old mesh office chair, with no arms and had clearly been discarded but repurposed. So I ordered him a deluxe version.

For the next item, first, a backstory. When we bought our bedroom suite, I told the salesperson, "We want the giant canopy bed, the ridiculous yet fabulous bench that goes with it, and 2 nightstands." SO was FIRMLY against the nightstands, saying that we did not need them and he thinks they would just get "junked up" with stuff. So I agreed. I do not really need one, I just wanted them. We did not get the nightstands. Then almost immediately after moving into our house, he commandeered one of my flimsy little tv tables to use as a nightstand, and proceeded to junk it up. Its been like that for 10 years, and I was sick of looking at it. Alas, our bedroom suite is no longer in production, so no matching nightstand available. So I just ordered one from amazon to house all his stuff.

Now, I knew when I bought these things that they would have to be put together. That's not an issue. Its not practical to ship things like that assembled. BUT (now to the rant) some of these things are ridiculous. Was it easy? Sure. The chair came together fairly quickly.

The nightstand? That was another story. I admit I have little patience for fiddly work, but I had prepared for a reasonable amount of fiddly work for the cause. THIS WAS INSANE. Yes, again, it was easy-ish. But irritating. First, some of the instructions were poorly translated. They also came in 2 separate instruction manuals, with the first one containing steps 1-28, and then 36-end, and the separate one containing the steps in the middle there. And there was really no reason for that. And, the nightstand lights up, and the instructions contained NO INSTRUCTION for hooking the wires up so that the lights would work. But even then I could work it out, as these things are somewhat expected in such matters. But the thing that almost made me just set it on fire and forget I ordered it was all the tiny little steps. The manufacturer, IMO, could have and should have done a LOT of those little steps and charged a little more for the effort saved. I do not have any specific steps to rant about, as I have blocked the details out of my mind for my own sanity. I just remember the blind rage I experienced. The amount of times i exclaimed "REALLY?!?!?!? YOU COULDN'T DO THIS?!?!?!?" Plus, the wide array of vulgar language, was impressive, and not one bit excessive, given the circumstances. The steps I am talking about would not affect shipping or the fragility of the item in shipping either.

In the end, it was worth it I guess. SO was THRILLED with both items, along with the other smaller items I got him, but declared the nightstand as his favorite gift, He admitted that he never would have thought to ask for that or buy one for himself, and now that he has it, is very very happy at the difference it makes. I did not air my grievances to him, not wanting to dampen his happiness with it, so I am doing it here.

However, not wanting to be a negative ninny-muggins, I will also share how delighted I was when I discovered that the office chair came with a both an easy to follow manual, but in that manual and also on a very large, easy to spot card in the box, was a QR code that led to a step by step video of the assembly process, demonstrated by an actual person putting it together, without needless extra commentary dragging it out, for those that would need it. I did not, but a lot of people are not easily inclined to such things, and I though that was a great touch. IMO, it would behoove ALL manufacturers of anything that needs to be assembled at home to have such a video produced and easily available to its customers. My weight/workout machine thing did have an assembly video, but it was AWFUL. It was an animation, in which the various parts were just sort of floating around. No audio, no one showing the steps, nothing. And that was very difficult for me and SO to put together, even with the video. It took 6 hours, and to this day I am not convinced we did it correctly, though no incidents have occurred yet.

Anyone agree?
