I haven't seen a wall-mounted, corded phone in years! I had no idea they were still available!

We haven't had a landline in probably 20 years now...

I love the way you write, Petalique. We keep a landline, and the base unit has a corded handset with an answering machine, then we have 2 cordless handsets for other parts of the house. But it's a desk model (Panasonic). When we had a seasonal rental cottage out here, I bought a corded wallphone at a thrift store to put on the wall where the phone jack was for the wall even though our renters all had their own cellphones. I found a pretty yellow one that matched the wallpaper I put in the kitchen. For the wallplate connector jack, maybe an electric supply company would have one.

Watch for a local home demolition sale and get one from there. Or ask a realtor if anyone is selling, and would let you take the outlet from their house as long as you put a blank plate cover over the hole. Or, ask a neighbor or someone who cut the cord, or needs only one corded phone in the house.

I understand. I dont know why people are so snotty about needing a corded phone. For us Cell phones can be spotty so we have hand held phones with corded bases. But when the power is out they do not work. So I have kept over the years a couple of princess phones that plug into the wall things. Bad news is that our phones are in a new system connected to our internet service and will not work when the power is out. lets hope the cell service has improved enough.

I lived in Death Valley once. At the time they did not have phones at all. You cant convince people that is possible.

We live in a remote part of the Cape, basically at sea level and have unreliable cell service, especially in the summer when hoards of people are competing for the available bandwith. Our landline isn't tied to our internet provider, so we do have a phone during power outages (which are not rare and can be somewhat prolonged in the case of bad coastal storms). We both have cellphones, but can't rely on them as our sole means of phone service.

I was incredulous because I truly didn't know they even existed or were supported, as all phone services around here (even for landlines these days) are VOIP.

I just canceled my landline a couple of years ago because it was bundled with my only available internet service...old copper phone lines. No 5g, tho I can get regular cell here. The internet(and landline) provider sent a letter that they could no longer source parts for their antiquated phone line internet services, so if something breaks we would not have internet, they would not be fixing anything. No other options (Hughesnet is worthless).

So I looked into Starlink for internet and it was a game changer. I live in the forest so siting it was tricky, not enough open sky. I found a guy who was mounting them in the tops of trees (an arborist) and he came out with a drone to pick the best tree. I love having real internet so much! I canceled my phone/internet service so fast! I would have liked to keep the landline because it did work when the power was out, but it was so satisfying to cancel everything and not give any $ to that phone company. And I can run my starlink with my generator and use internet/wifi phone service for my cell if needed, I'm pretty sure I could still have a working landline because the phone company is never going to update our lines and as long as they remain the old copper lines, I could use a plug in phone. I still have an old princess phone that I kept for that purpose. Maybe some day I'll see a really low $$ special for a landline and get one again. I did like having phones in all the rooms and not having to haul my cell around with me.

Oly, AT & T sent us that sort of letter. Our land line is FIOS but no good if power fails. DH (Bart) is _Supposed_ to get the battery pack for the Fios land line. Ten years and still wairing. (“I prefer not to.”)

We still have a landline, but not a corded one. It has a base and three satellite phones in most of the downstairs rooms. I hate talking on my iPhone. Back in the day, we had a very long cord on the kitchen phone and my daughter would take it up the stairs and int her room to talk to her boyfriend.

My DH will also drive around all day looking for something. I do not go with him. Many times he gets back home and order it, sometimes even from the store he was shopping at because they didn't have it in stock.

Glad you found one! We have a landline because cell service is spotty where we live.

It may be that your attitude about it is like the last person in town to use a horse and buggy when everyone else had a car. Being defensive and not open minded. "Why are you so surprised about what I have, I don't understand why you think what you have is better".

My thoughts about some of the above comments:

-If the cell signal is poor where you live, enable Wifi Calling on your phone and put the phone on Airplane Mode when you're home.

-If you don't like holding a smart phone for phone calls (I don't either), get a Bluetooth earpiece. They're comfortable, relatively inexpensive and work well.

- As someone mentioned, wireless phones can be used for both landlines and VOIP (intenet routed) phone providers. Panasonic makes good ones. Get as many handsets as you want. Put one in every room if that's what works for you.

- There are a lot of ways to have a landline. I bought an Ooma device about 15 years ago and transferred our landline phone number to it. Basic service is about $3 per month, it's taxes only. The device costs about $80, break even (compared to paying the phone co a monthly charge) is less than one year. One benefit (that we don't bother with) is for people with two homes, you can take your device with you, connect it (just a cable to the router) at a second place, and your "home phone" will ring at your new location. It doesn't care where you are. Cellular "home phone" service works the same way in this regard.

Oomas will work over any kind of internet device, Starlink included.

-What's behind the need to have a phone that operates when the power is out, when you have a cell phone? How often does the power go out anyway.

The last time I was in Death Valley (just before the pandemic), cell coverage was indeed mostly non-existent. A very spotty and mostly not usable signal from my carrier at Furnace Creek. It may be a bit better now, but who needs a phone at a national park? And for those who live there and have access to Wifi, Wifi calling would work just fine.

We only got rid of our landline when we moved 4 years ago. Had we stayed, I suspect we would have kept it.

I liked having the landline so I could give that number to my employer. I did not need to be disturbed wherever I might be with a work phone call. (Select coworkers had my cell number).

Petalique, had you not found a phone, I was going to suggest a thrift store.

I've always kept a corded land line. During our 2007 entire community power outage of several days, we literally had a line of people waiting to use it to call insurance agents, family to let them know they were OK.

Being coastal, I've never quite trusted needing to charge or even the back up battery in the Comcast house sets. I needed to be available to my elderly mother in senior care (another city) all hours, all weather events.

She's gone now and I still have the land line - it's getting expensive and I could probably let it go but its a habit of a lifetime and I do still have it. In our bedroom, within reach of the bed.

It's an At&T phone, believe I bought it from their website.

We finally got rid of our landline several years ago because the local phone company (Verizon) was barely maintaining their copper wire lines any more and it just kept not working and not being fixed by them. I can't recall who told me, but in an emergency situation, a landline here wouldn't work anyway because they use different technology here for landlines now, and it would go down too.

We have excellent mobile coverage here, fortunately.

And have you tried eBay.com yet? In the past, I had good luck finding parts for obsolete household tech there. The trick is figuring out and using the proper terminology.

I suspect where you live is relatively flat. That helps signal availability.

In many places, including where I am, the ridges and valleys of hills can do an excellent job of blocking signals. A number of years ago, I complained to my mobile carrier about signal degradation at my house and they were nice enough to provide me with a free "network extender". It's like having a private cell tower in the house - it's low power and safe, of course. The device itself is connected to my home network and routes calls that way. For when I or my wife haven't remembered to switch to Wifi Calling, and also for guests and visitors using the same carrier, the signal it provides is the max number of bars of strength. Instead of 1 or, sometimes barely, 2.

If the power is out, I can go outside on one side of my house and usually get a usable signal. The weak signal from the normal towers, without having access to my boost device, does not provide acceptable day to day service.
