I most often tend to drink my distilled spirits neat or with a little ice, I don't generally do mixed cocktails. However, once in a great while (especially during hot, hot weather) a vodka & grapefruit (must be fresh squeezed) with a splash of cranberry is both pretty and refreshing. Sort of a backwards Seabreeze, which is a vodka & cranberry with a splash of grapefruit (also very good). lynnalexandra, from my Boston's guide, Ramos Fizz Juice of 1/2 lemon one egg white 1 t powdered sugar 2 oz gin 1 T light cream 1/2 t triple sec Shake with ice and strain into highball glass oer two ice cubes. Fill with carbonated water and stir. At the restaurant where I worked for many years, we used orange flower water as a float on top. A nice, refreshing martini-glass cocktail is an old fashioned Gimlet. One oz of fresh lime juice, 1/12 oz gin and one t powdered sugar, shaken with ice and strained. I actually prefer to use a simple syrup instead of the powdered sugar to keep the drink crystal clear or, if I have no lime juice on hand, use Roses Lime and leave out the sugar....See MoreNew or Favorite Summer Drinks ....please add yours to this list
Comments (28)I think this is a good starting point. I looked for the recipe I first used but think it must have been on a rum bottle or?? One thing I've learned is to NOT put the mint in the simple syrup (when making the syrup) instead of muddling it. I did that one time per a friend's instruction and YUCK it made the mojito taste like mouthwash. In a 16 ounce mixing glass, gently muddle together: 1 large sprig spearmint .75 oz simple syrup Add: 1 oz of fresh squeezed lime juice and pulp 2 oz white rum (sometimes called Silver Rum) I use Castillo Silver 3 oz club soda or sparkling mineral water Top with crushed ice and mix until drink is combined and glass is frosty. I used to use club soda, but now use Gerolsteiner mineral water that I buy at Trader Joe's. I've tried other mineral waters, but it's the only one I like I'd not use any other...if you can't find it, use club soda and use a name brand, not a house brand. I like Schweppes the best. Comments (26)The first time I had a hot buttered rum was at a lady's home in Brown County, Indiana. Brown County is hilly and wooded (at least back then) and very beautiful on a snowy winter day. This lady's house was amazing. She had traveled the world, literally, and had decorated her home with the beautiful things she found on her trips. We went to visit and she made us this drink on a cold night in winter with snow outside and a big fire in the fireplace. While we sipped, she told of stories of her travels. It was a wonderful and memorable night. (This would also be good for a sore throat, I would think!) HOT BUTTERED RUM (Rachael Ray) 2/3 cup packed dark brown sugar 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature 1/4 cup honey 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves Pinch salt 3/4 cup spiced rum 2 cups boiling water 4 sticks cinnamon, for garnish Using an electric mixer, beat the brown sugar, butter, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt in a medium bowl until blended and smooth. Transfer the mixture to a 4-cup (or larger) measuring cup. Add the rum and then 2 cups of boiling water. Stir until the butter mixture dissolves. Divide the buttered rum among 4 mugs. Garnish with the cinnamon sticks and serve....See MoreShow your end of summer/beginning of fall favorites!
Comments (20)John In my experience, ZZ is extremely slow. I have tried to root many leaves, but lots of them rotted for me. So I feel very good about few that didn't. Plants in the photo are over 2yrs old. I have another, green ZZ that I damaged a stalk, but lef it in the pot and it grew 2 new shoots from the bulb that was NOT damaged. That was much faster; I didn't take photo right away as I thought it will not make it - IIRC, it took but 3mo for 1st shoot to appear. Photo 1 is from July - damaged stem is still there & 2 shoots are just growing. I cut the damaged off, & just taken 2nd photo. So you can see how much they grew in 3.5months The Ludisia discolor has been doing well. I have sold 5 single-stems. I traded 1 cutting of Cebu blue (rooted) for a tiny Macodes (green). It was smaller, grew 2 tiny leaves since I got it in July 2021. Hope it will grow - it has been slow so far: I also bought another purple one but with different markings (name escapes me now). That one I got in beg. of Sept., & is growing 2nd leaf since:...See More- 7 months ago
