Oh no, sorry to hear about this episode. You did the right thing by going in to get checked out, though. Heatstroke is no joke, and it might have been the warning signs of being on the border of that. Hopefully it won't happen again.

Did they give you IV fluid in the ER and for how many hours? Did they check your lactic acid levels?

My mom just went through chemo and went to the ER twice for what turned out to be dehydrated. Each time she was wobbly when walking, once she blacked out. Her electrolyte levels on blood tests were excellent and her pee was clear. (Both because she was taking electrolyte packets at home and drinking 2 liters of water a day to try to avoid dehydration.) This is when I learned you can be dehydrated and have clear pee and normal or even high electrolytes!

The first time she rebounded after two hours on IV fluid. Not only did she feel better but her lactic acid number started trending down. The second time she stayed over night because it took 8 hours before her lactic acid numbers started going down.

They of course ran CT scans and other tests while she was there to rule out other things but the proof was in the lactic acid counts.

In the meantime it is scary, and I'm sorry you are going through this.

Here’s a sentence from AI “10mg can be overwhelming for beginners, potentially causing paranoia, impaired coordination, or rapid heart rate. “ Even though you’re pretty certain the gummy was the cause of your experience, I’d still have any tests the doc recommends. Of course you should tell the doc what you’ve figured out & do not be embarrassed about it either. The tales the docs could tell are far more - shall we say interesting?- than yours. I would imagine doc would be thrilled to have the mystery solved & may use this experience in future diagnosing situations.

I wasn’t aware before your disclosure of taking THC, so my thinking now that THC high, along with what you described earlier would accelerate your symptoms when you’re outside in hot weather. The doc needs to know about THC and what else you’re taking. Hopefully you’ll feel better after the THC effects wear off. Monitoring daily glucose and taking notes would be helpful before your next appointment.

This week was my daughter’s prom, and last night my son asked me if Iremembered his prom night. Um, yes I do. He called me from an after party, asking me to pick him up. Regulated substances, at least for my daughter. But I agree that self medicating can be very dangerous, including with alcohol. But people do it all day long everyday.

Did the incident you referred to just before involve a medication manufactured by a licensed and inspected pharmaceutical company and obtained by having a normal physician's written or electronically transmitted prescription to a pharmacy?

Everybody reacts differently, and in my experience even prescriptions from a licensed doctor involve trial and error self dosing. The manufacture may be regulated (and weak!) but beyond that there’s a lot of make it up as you go within this field of quackery.

Well stated food. I was so glad to be there whenever my daughter experienced what she experienced... And we pledge to watch each other should either of us decide to do anything more. I've never had that desire. I'm so glad I was there because she just absolutely was miserable. She was bombarded upon every sense. I held her hand and we went through hell together. Drawing an analogy or parallel to something else sheds no light. Adults can buy alcoholic beverages too and kill themselves using it in a matter of hours. Great. Talking about that offers no parallel nor insights to using THC gummies, brownies, or the like.

i was prescribed a muscle relaxant when i was having severe muscle spasms in my back. i took half of the prescribed dose the first time and had some mild hallucinations. nothing major, just kind of...weird. it did help with the spasms so that night when my second dose was due, i took the whole dose.

before i even fell asleep, the hallucinations started and they were beyond bizarre. my dane girl was standing in the door way, teeth bared, hackles up, snarling in my direction. now, this girl is as lovable as they come and this was just so unlike her and very unnerving. then, my dane boy sauntered over to my bed and thought he'd climb up and keep me company. he was wearing a pink tutu.

eventually, i fell asleep but the dreams were just...i don't even know how to describe them. some funny, some scary as could be. i kept waking up wondering if what i was seeing was real. at one point, my house was on fire. that one woke me completely up and i walked through the house checking everything i could think of. i sat down in my recliner, by then i was wide awake. i heard my husband's voice say "hey babe", looked over to see him sitting on the couch, smiling at me. at that point in my life, he had been dead for 18 years. i stayed up the rest of the night, willing the medication to leave my system. once i got my wits about me, i took the bottle outside, opened it and tossed the contents as far into the woods as i could.

As a person who never took drugs and very rarely even an ibuprofen, don't drink alcohol and weigh 108 pounds, this hit me like a brick. My son has a mountain bike /travel business and sells these on the side. He gave me and his sister each a bottle and told us to only take 1/4. She wisely cut all hers up and took one in time for sleep and it didn't work so she never took any more. So when I texted my son in Ireland about my ER visit with his sister, he called to see how I was. He said at first it was probably a heat stroke and then I told him how I was fine and instantly my mouth was soooo dry and cottony. It was then he said, Did you take a gummy. I told him I did and then completely forgot I wasn't supposed to take the whole thing. Could it still be in my system because I don't feel completely normal? The ER doctor was most concerned about my confusion and hallucinations, but that and my rapid heartbeat and nausea are totally because of the gummy. My daughter thinks I still should get the MRI which is scheduled for July 14 to rule out any problems.

Nina...that must have been awful. Mine was nothing so scary. I was in the mall and the DICKs sign looked much further away than normal. And when I got home and sat on a chair , the room looked weird and I felt like I was in a cave. I will never touch another gummy again. My very first and last time with THC.

The hallucinations? That totally sounds like my daughter. She has never had that happen before or since. You can blame it on the gummy.

If you are still feeling 'off' then ya it's still in your system assuming you didn't do permeant damage and given stories from friends who are sensitive to chemicals I would consider it. I'm so surprised nothing was asked at your intake interview. It's legal to consume here and has been for quite some time. The questions about possible consumption as common as asking how many OTC tylenol one might take.

When I would do my practical experience update to be an EMT we took the histories of people coming into the ER and you had to be really specific about meds with an emphasis on OTC because people dont realize how much impact such things can have. Back in the day it was astonishingly common for old people to be taking massive amounts of aspirin like twenty tablets a day sort of thing. They were thinning their blood apparently. I personally wish marijuana products were properly pharmaceutical and prescription.

And once, when I was away on a trip, hubby, during a late night binge, found an infused chocolate bar I'd stashed in the back of the fridge and ATE THE ENTIRE BAR, thinking it was regular chocolate - 1 dose was a single square. He knew what to do tho - just laid down and went to sleep.

That's what I did too, when I ODed (laid down, but didn't sleep) - it felt a lot like a panic attack 😕

FWIW, regulation is nice for edibles as it gives us the correct amount and dosage, but that can't stop anyone from eating more than a recommended dose - and with candies/gummies/chocolate, even tho warnings on packaging instruct users to wait 1 1/2 hours or so before consuming more, many people do not read directions, as I'm sure we're all well aware.

It can certainly cause paranoid and anxiety. And I imagine it was completely scary as your first time and taking a much larger dose than recommended for your size.

I have never had gummies but back in high school I certainly had fun with other forms of THC. The whole point for us was to smoke enough to have hallucinations. We enjoyed them tremendously. Dry mouth be damned. We loved our munchies and our trippy perceptions of the world. I have no need to do it again.

Great news Iily! You will be back to your old self shortly. Yes it may linger in your body very briefly, because you are tiny and very clean living. Your body will shake off 10mg quickly and you should feel fine about canceling your mri based on your true diagnosis. 😂

I have held the hand of a few people who have over done it. Usually a good nap fixes everything. Now that you know it was self inflicted and nothing to fear, you can let it go and get back to normal. Lily I read about your issues late last night and here I am reading that you’re thankfully ok. I too wondered why you weren’t ask about any meds you were currently taking or had taken in the kast 24 hours. That seems to be a common question. At any rate, good to hear you figured it out and I’m sure you will be fine.

We had dinner with friends and former neighbors last evening. She unfortunately had a stroke about 2 months ago and this was her first dinner out. She was telling us about when she realized something was happening to her, and it was in many ways similar to what you first experienced. She was in the grocery store and suddenly felt strange and couldn’t remember what she came to the store to buy, except that she needed to pick up a prescription. She went home, went to bed and several hours later her husband was calling 911 because she couldn’t make her legs work. Fortunately she is recovering nicely, still doing rehab for strength in her left side, and thankfully it didn’t affect her speech.

I think you've rather misunderstood the question.

The intent of this is not to learn an insight about the patient's lifestyle or leisure practices. It's to inquire what s/he ingests.

Recreational drugs are called that because they are not by-prescription pharmaceuticals reported elsewhere and are not normal regulated over the counter items that would be specifically asked about if it mattered.

I'm surprised they didn't do a blood test which would have shown the THC in your system. A friend fighting cancer ingests so much to help her combat the chemo and Keytruda side affects, she wouldn't even think to mention it to a new doctor. It's as normal (to her) as drinking water is to me.

I think it is an interesting distinction of recreational vs medical or even supplemental. Pharmaceutical drugs can obviously be used recreationally since so many people do it. Recreational drugs are done for fun. But THC can be used medically as in this case to reduce stress and there is always the pain relief aspect when that works for some people. It is just unfortunate that such a potentially useful set of medical assistance isn't under proper control so you have to depend on the provider to be honest. Look at the supplement industry. You are typically paying for garbage so are not getting the actual potential benefit. I remember a study where multiple brands of things like Gingko and other herbal remedies were assayed and they were mostly grass clippings.

It seems like unless it was prescribed by a physician for stress, then it's still recreational use. Similar to how one might use alcohol to reduce or cope with stress. Unless a doctor is prescribing it, isn't it still just recreational use or self-medicating? Of other note, when one gets a prescription from a doctor and a pharmacy, I believe dosing instructions are required to be on the label. In this case it seems like part of the problem for Lily was the lack of clear dosing information.

The ER doctor requested the MRI and a fasting glucose test, which my primary doc ordered, and I did the blood this morning. I'm happy that he ordered about eight categories, including glucose and every one, including glucose was in the middle of where it should be on the chart. I don't remember if they asked if I took something but by that time I wouldn't have remembered. That was the part where the ER doc was concerned, thinking stroke. As I said, I have never used drugs in my life, never smoked, and don't drink. People on various forums talked about gummies reducing stress. Since my son gave them to me six months ago, I forgot where they even were until I spotted them high on the pantry shelf. Today I went back to the mall and did my three 18 minutes miles in 58 minutes and the DICKs sign was normal. Of course, this will be a family joke forever, but I will never ever take another one. (And no, I didn't drive to the mall, my husband did)

The medical claims and benefits are kind of make it up as you go along. At one point my doctor enthusiastically told me that people were reporting cannabis relieves some covid symptoms, and asked me to report back if I felt it helped. I don't think he asked me to report back if it didn't help.

Marijuana products have so much emotional baggage because of its history but it does have it medicinal uses. So maybe I should have used medicinal instead of medical? The topic was about a patient being questioned about using "recreational drugs". That's a category for a medical background, not a behavioral one for psychoanalysis. It was a medical matter, not a sociological/lifestyle/addictive behavior inquiry.

@HU-279332973 that is a fair point regarding ibuprofen. I appreciate the dialog. For me I view THC as different than Ibuprofen because of its intoxicating and imparing effect. But to your point, there are other over the counter medications such as certain cough medicines which can also have an impairing effect.

Exactly Pricklypearcactus. I used Ibuprofen because it was so innocuous to most people although it is not. We as a nation have demonized Marijuana products. It is only one of the naturally occuring chemical factories that we find useful. Though most herbals are made artificially when they go into the pharma industry that is where they came from. That to this day our government still doesnt let research people get into the nitty gritty of Marijuana says everything. You can get Morphine in the hospital (I am allergic) and it is a naturally occurring part of poppies but we still limit research on marijuana. By comparison as a substance to be abused it is ludicrous but we seem stuck in this dynamic.

I'm not so sure. In the past 10 years or so, retail purchase and small quantity possession for use have been decriminalized/legalized (I'm not sure which is the more appropriate term) in one-half of the states. And in many others, the sham of "medical marijuana" has similarly provided a gap in laws that people have long been ignoring (and local law enforcement has long been halfheartedly enforcing at best, if at all) anyway.

I’m also curious about a limiting of research. If that’s what our country is doing what about other countries? I know that THC and CBD have been shown to have certain benefits, some even better than placebo but for all the claims people throw around there’d have to be more studies and research if anyone suspected there was much to it.
