Bill Moyers has died

last year

He was a denizen of broadcast media. His career and work kept him in the public eye for decades and decades. His face and his voice were instantly recognizable.

I rarely agreed with his politics, but I never doubted the personal sincerity behind what he said and did. He was 91.

Reading his obituary, I was unaware of the important role he played in the Johnson administration. I very much enjoyed his PBS programs.

A great broadcaster would do their job so the audience didn't know their politics. Searched the name. Never heard/saw him.

ncage, We live in Wisconsin and our ground water is really high this year from all the rain and our sump pump has been cycling pretty much once per minute since mid March (it did stop for a week or two sometime during the past three months but then started up again). I've cut and pasted below a chart from our utility's web site showing our electricity consumption for the first five months of 2008 (when the sump pump ran pretty much every minute from mid-march until now) and the first 5 months of 2007 (when the sump pump didn't run much at all) so that you can see the increase in electricity consumption caused by our sump pump. The chart didn't cut and past very well so I hope you can understand it. We live in a 3,190 square foot two-story house. Our basement is 1,900 square feet. Maybe I should repeat for those who missed it. DH and I are the sole beneficiaries in estate, and its a very nice house in a desirable neighborhood, so... As I see it, it's really a question of 1.pay them now or 2.pay them later with interest, extra paperwork and possibly unnecessary problems. I have no doubt we will get it all back. As I've said, the only things I'm paying are ongoing house utilities. And we're keeping those as low as possible. I even unplugged things drawing "phantom" power like TV's. I did pay the current property tax bill and hoping to sell before the school tax bill (thats the big one around here) in Sept. Her yearly reports just came this week from Metlife. That's kind of confusing. Say's they are annuities and there is also a death benefit which is the same amount as the balance. So they sound like tied to insurance? Sorry, I'm just ignorant of this so far. Meeting with her agent again next week and hope to clear that up. Just wish he'd focus on the task at hand instead of talking to me about our own investments, where they are, how they're doing. Sandy

Sspye, My sister mentioned that a few weeks ago and I almost died laughing. I know the neighborhoods that are most likely to get chickens and they are all near the high schools. The kids are going to get into some trouble! There used to be a lot of farmers that would bring food to the old Farmer Johns stand in AA and loved walking to it as a kid. Things sure have changed!

I have natural gas and for years, even with the increases, $1.25-$1.50 per therm was pretty common, which isn't bad to me. But my last bill it was up to $1.80 and this is summertime use. I'm going to batten down the hatches and prep for a long winter of bills. Hopefully it'll be a mild winter. It's been a relatively mild summer here so far. maybe it'll carry on. My cousin gets a summer fill on his propane and contracts the price for winter. By doing this in the summer he gets a much better price. They increased it but he decided it wasn't cheap enough. I think he may regret his decision.

@arcy_gw - For much of his career he was hired as a commentator, thus it was his job to critque and give opinions when in that role. These days, merely covering two sides of a story makes you political.

I’m so surprised you have never heard of him. Maybe you are a generation younger than many of the GenX and Boomers here.

It was a sad day when journalism decided it needed to present 'balanced' covereage of every issue to a simple-minded public that equates coverage with truth.

I loved Bill Moyers and especially liked the show he did with Joseph Campbell, whose books I also own and have read.

RIP Bill !

I became a fan of his when I found his coverage of the financial crisis, I think he came out of retirement for that ? His integrity was undeniable, his coverage of the financial crisis was profound.

Sad to hear this. He was always interesting with a sincerity and earnestness not often seen in today's commentators. He was very bright and shared his curiosity with others via his interviews. I too remember the interview with Campbell and read the book that documented their conversation: The Power of Myth.

He grew up in Marshall, Texas. That Marshall produced such a person is amazing.

My family is all out of that Marshall/Longview area and hubs and I did live in Marshall for a while where we meant some like minded folks like us......liberal minded. But, generally speaking, we were in a minority there.
