What does your Pope John Paul II shrub look like?
Comments (39)Fascinating to find this thread on PJPII. My own (three year old) plant looks smaller and smaller each year. New canes seem to just flop over and peel off of the main plant. Can't figure out what the matter is as it's in a prime location. Roses nearby look terrific. (I had a similar problem with Summer Romance who was in the spot first--it's canes would grow a couple of feet and then just sort of collapse and peel off of the main plant.). Last year it bloomed only once really. This year it has new growth but it's all very, very spindly. So maybe it is because I am in the PNW? @Kristine LeGault 8a pnw Easy Does It is a favorite of mine because it blooms constantly. That color is astonishing and people always stop to photograph it. I am dying to know how your nail technician killed it! Haha! Interestingly, I lost a Double Delight standard last year--just died over a period of 3-4 weeks and was about three years old. Turns out, there was a huge cavity under the rose where an old tree root had been (a tree my neighbor had). Evidently, the root had finally dissolved leaving a large cavity, and so my standard was growing roots into air. Only discovered it when I dug out the plant and the soil collapsed about 10 inches!...See MorePope Francis
Comments (12)Lapsed catholic here and very much agnostic. However, I attended catholic schools from prek-12 then a large catholic university for undergrad. I love the new pope and believe he is getting back to the "universal" Church. I love his focus on social change. The core beliefs of Catholicism are very much at odds with capitalism-- it's refreshing to hear a pope state it so plainly. It's also refreshing to see a pope stress human decency, compassion and empathy when referencing homosexuality, divorce etc. However I find it odd how he is polling the laity to gauge feeling on doctrine. I wonder if he will be changing canon law based on popular opinion? If so, it seems to contradict the belief in ordained popes and ability to speak gods will. In particular when he speaks on matters that in the past would have been considered infalliable, will those declarations of infalliability be directly guided by popular opinion of the laity? I have no more faith in the man made institution of the Church than I did before this man became pope. Gold- all churches steal. Unfortunately it's not reserved for one particular faith. I've read anecdotes very similar to yours in many Protestant denominations. Just as sexual abuse happened across many religions unfortunately te hierarchy of the Catholic Church as well as the unique aspects of confessions and act of contentions allowed the horrifying atrocities to continue long after the acts could have been stopped. It's disgusting that they allowe those priests to be shuffled around and hide behind the cloth. Not trying to justify the gross abuses, I am merely pointing out they occur across all denominations. I find all religious institutions corrupt political machines used to exert some form of social control. IMHO, Marx was right religion is the opium of the masses. However this pope atleast seems willing to use the power of religion to influence positive social change in the world rather than to sit in an ivory tower and write academic edicts while ignoring the most oppressed or needy. For that I guess he is deserving of times man if the year. He seems to have captured the worlds attention with his refreshing attitude. Time will tell if he brings about the positive changes....See MorePope Francis and the Fiat

I don't think it's incorrect to conscienciously object to something you are morally against. I am not an OB-GYN, but I would conscienciously object if compelled by my employer or the government to perform abortions. I would probably go to jail first. I personally think abortion is murder. On the other hand, I think it should be legal and a matter of individual choice, because there are differing opinions regarding when life begins. I am also not female so I think female reproductive rights are none of my business. The Pope is essentially a political figure and he has to respond primarily to his electorate within the church hierarchy and the Roman Catholic faith at large, and really no one else. The Catholic Church, particularly at the hierarchical level is conservative, more conservative, I think, than Francis is personally. And as a politician, not a dictator, he has to temper whatever his personal views are in the context of response to the tenets of Catholicism. There aren't going to be any quantum leaps when it comes to Church Doctorine. (I am generally not into conspiracy theories, but I believe that Pope John Paul I may have been assassinated because he was liberal and the hierarchy was not ready for that.) Here is an excerpt from the Ratzinger Letter, which coincidentally, was given 29 years ago today, (October 1 1986) with the approval of John Paul II: "Although the particular inclination of the homosexual person is not a sin, it is a more or less strong tendency ordered toward an intrinsic moral evil; and thus the inclination itself must be seen as an objective disorder" (areas in bold are mine). Personally, I think progress is being made. In a few decades, homosexuality has gone from legally criminal and medically-psychiatrically disordered, to marginalized and disenfranchised but not criminal, to a sort of second class status that is continuing to gain in status on a number of fronts, grudgingly in some quarters. This is what our own government concluded in 1986 in Bowers v. Hardwick: Bowers v. Hardwick, 478 U.S.186 (1986), is a United States Supreme Court decision, overturned in 2003, that upheld, in a 5–4 ruling, the constitutionality of a Georgiasodomy law criminalizing oral and anal sex in private between consenting adults when applied to homosexuals.[1] This stemmed from a case in which the defendant was being served a summons to court on a littering charge. The police were let into the house by a roommate and proceded, with his permission to the subject's bedroom, opened the bedroom door (which was not latched) and walked in on him having sex, at which point he was arrested for having sex in the privacy of his own home. Note the date that this decision was overturned: 2003. Personally I can hardly expect a 2000 year old conservative religion with 5000 year old roots to shift doctrine as rapidly as a 200 year old democracy changes law. I should add that I am a practicing Catholic and I watch Mass online every day, and engage in other religious observances. I've lived 20 years, unmarried, to an atheist with a Quaker background. I don't think that my personal convictions make any rational sense at all. I understand this, but it doesn't alter it....See MoreHow does Francis Meilland handle MidwestZ5 climate?
Comments (28)Not well in my estimate. I ordered him from Roses Unlimited in either spring of 2017 or 2018 and currently he is two decently thick canes *maybe* ten inches tall if I'm lucky. Plus thrips terrorize his blooms. I'm seconding Seil and her vote of 'Quietness'. I ordered mine from The Antique Rose Emporium spring 2017 and is currently around four feet tall and about 2.5-3 feet wide. Cane hardy to the tips but so far mine hasn't really held onto canes grown for more than a couple years before it pulls their resources and focuses on new growth. I hope this will change with maturity because even as nice as one or two thick, tall, hardy and branchy canes are, I am hoping for much more fullness once it's established. Francis has a more consistent fragrance while Quietness's I have found to vary muchly depending upon weather and season. Steven...See More- 24 days ago
