Francis Bacon "On Gardening"
Comments (9)A garden is "the purest of human pleasures." Given that actual gardens at the time were highly artificial and geometrical, it's very interesting that part of Bacon's imaginary project is to be a wild-looking garden, "heath or desert." Later in the 17th century, Milton imagined Paradise to be lush and wild, and in the 18th, Alexander Pope in his own garden and in his poetry promoted the style of irregular, natural-looking garden design that we still take to be normal. So that whole thing began in the English literary imagination. Here's something I never heard of, using soils of different color as a design element, although Bacon thinks it is too artificial--just as most of us think colored mulch is tacky: "As for the making of knots or figures, with divers colored earths, that they may lie under the windows of the house on that side which the garden stands, they be but toys; you may see as good sights many times in tarts." For a statesman and philosopher, Bacon's knowledge of horticulture is impressive. Thanks, Ann....See MorePope Francis
Comments (12)Lapsed catholic here and very much agnostic. However, I attended catholic schools from prek-12 then a large catholic university for undergrad. I love the new pope and believe he is getting back to the "universal" Church. I love his focus on social change. The core beliefs of Catholicism are very much at odds with capitalism-- it's refreshing to hear a pope state it so plainly. It's also refreshing to see a pope stress human decency, compassion and empathy when referencing homosexuality, divorce etc. However I find it odd how he is polling the laity to gauge feeling on doctrine. I wonder if he will be changing canon law based on popular opinion? If so, it seems to contradict the belief in ordained popes and ability to speak gods will. In particular when he speaks on matters that in the past would have been considered infalliable, will those declarations of infalliability be directly guided by popular opinion of the laity? I have no more faith in the man made institution of the Church than I did before this man became pope. Gold- all churches steal. Unfortunately it's not reserved for one particular faith. I've read anecdotes very similar to yours in many Protestant denominations. Just as sexual abuse happened across many religions unfortunately te hierarchy of the Catholic Church as well as the unique aspects of confessions and act of contentions allowed the horrifying atrocities to continue long after the acts could have been stopped. It's disgusting that they allowe those priests to be shuffled around and hide behind the cloth. Not trying to justify the gross abuses, I am merely pointing out they occur across all denominations. I find all religious institutions corrupt political machines used to exert some form of social control. IMHO, Marx was right religion is the opium of the masses. However this pope atleast seems willing to use the power of religion to influence positive social change in the world rather than to sit in an ivory tower and write academic edicts while ignoring the most oppressed or needy. For that I guess he is deserving of times man if the year. He seems to have captured the worlds attention with his refreshing attitude. Time will tell if he brings about the positive changes....See MorePope John Paul II blooms
Comments (9)Thank you so much everyone! Moses, I think that Pope John Paul II must be a good rose, and I do see signs of improvement in mine. It has struggled for four seasons, but it is planted near Firefighter, Francis Meilland and Julia Child which have struggled too, and they are also improving. Mine is grafted on Dr. Huey, so I don't have an opinion on how it would do own root. We've had relatively mild winters recently, but most hybrid teas are hardy in my zone. Mine hasn't gotten very big so far, and the canes have remained green, so I've pruned it very little. i do.believe PJPII is very vigorous for some. Maybe someone who has had better success than me will give their input. At this time I am very hopeful that mine will improve. It is one beautiful rose and very fragrant !...See MoreSt Francis of Assisi, woof woof
Comments (41)I like singing? A Catholic friend of mine invited to sing with her church choir for Lent and Easter back in 1995, and I never left. She moved away, but I'm still going. We're small (post-pandemic attrition) but mighty. There were only two of us on Sunday, as our only other reliable regular was on vacation. I feel a need to add a disclaimer when I say I go to a Catholic church because I know that people file away little bits of information about people from their posts (I do, anyway, to the extent that I can keep everyone straight in my head), and the natural assumption would be that I am, well, Catholic....See More- last year
