Unnerving, for sure. I just turn to TV coverage of the Tornado swarth AR, towards northeast.

Aren't they rare in bay area?

there were several tornados near my area yesterday but none overnight.

It’s terrible to have those warnings rumble through in the middle of the night and keep one awake.

I feel you Elmer. My little area got 19 tornadoes the day before hurricane Milton. It was so stressful I would up with shingles. We NEVER get tornadoes. There was no where to go.

I noticed that it is also very cold on the SF peninsula now - more than 10° colder than it is here, and it is cold here also, with a low of 53° and a high of only 73°. We've been having high winds for the past week as well, but no tornado alerts. Several streets have been closed due to sand dunes, making traffic much worse on streets that are open.

I don't blame you! Dreadful. I'm glad you're safe. We had a similar experience the other evening here in the midwest where we spent a couple of hours in the basement, glued to the weather reports. The nearest tornado was maybe 10 miles away but we had 100mph winds that were unnerving. At least it wasn't overnight like what you experienced!

Elmer - the winds up & down the West coast have been really bad these past few days! They’re not the norm for this time of year for sure. A few days ago we had tornado watches nearby where they’ve had funnel clouds touch down in the past. We also had severe hail storms off & on. The high winds from the southeast this past Sunday made such a mess with all the huge conifers here. Our roof cleaner guy came yesterday to remove some very large branches & clean off our hip style roof. No damage up there thankfully. Good news is we may hit low 70’s this weekend for a bit of spring weather!

Hope all is well Elmer and the .storm has passed. Those storms, especially the ridiculous winds, are no joke.

Terrible situation there in the mid-west esp along the Miss river which may test it levies in the coming days as the rain just sits over there along with the tornado threat. Good Luck!

The lack of sleep and the constant stress are not good for us. Nighttime storms are the worst, you can’t see what’s happening outside, and if there is damage it is harder to see or take care of. I hope all is well and you have time to recover today.

I can't believe how incessant it is. Ugh. I'm so tired. Sirens all night, along with all the storm. Work sent out so many yellow and orange alerts. They're all canceled now, but the thunder is still rumbling the whole house.

I'm in a city and all is well, thanks. There's apparently a lotof flooding and closed roads around. I didn't hear sirens but lots of lightning and thunder and constant warning broadcasts on my smartphone. And moving to and fro as the warnings advised.

I'm at or near a locale other forum participants may be around too so others may report similar experiences.

We had a similar weather alert last week. Part of the same storm system, I believe. Thunder, lightening, quarter sized hail, heavy rains and the possibility of tornados. All that materialized was a few rumbles of thunder and a couple of short-lived downpours.

Pretty much a non-event. Hope this turns out the same.

That must be an awful feeling, not knowing what's going on in the dark. We rarely get tornadoes here but there have been rare happenings. That will probably change. This system, which is bringing tons of rain throughout many states, gave us 1/10th of an inch and we are in a very severe drought, the driest spring since 1880 with a six-inch deficit. Does anyone now think climate change is a hoax?

Spent nearly an hour or so, on and off in the middle bathroom and/or trying to get my daughter's dogs in there with me last night. I was watching a youtube channel that watches the radar and letting people know when a tornado was on the ground nearby. Poor guy was up giving alerts all day, like 20 hours straight. More sleepless nights here in Kentucky for the next few days. Hope everyone stays safe!

caflowerluvr, refer to the radar image above. I'm in a Southern state, south of what would be the Mason Dixon line if extended to the West. Under the storm track shown in the image. The extreme weather was moving last night from Southwest to Northeast along that line.

Good local YouTube station, like 4 guys interpreting radar images with contact through private connection to NWS. Over 3+ hours, there were maybe 6 instances of "people in X need to move to their safe places NOW! ". Or, "You can go to bed now but we'll be waking you up to move in 15 min".

At one time >40,000 people watching it.

It's pretty common for local broadcast news to interrupt normal scheduled programming to cover severe weather outbreaks in their viewing area. Here they were on from around 5:00 am to 10:00 am yesterday and reported on 3 tornados that moved thru southeast of the KC metro with the closest missing me by about 30 miles. One missed Whiteman Airforce base (where the B2 bombers are stationed) by ~10 miles. There is a NWS field office just south of the KCS metro in Pleasant Hill, MO.

I am in a part of the country where we get tornadic weather frequently. Yesterday I was in a thrift store about to investigate a new-in-box Aerogarden (for seed starting possibilities; my heating cable used in damp sand is kaput), when sirens went off. The store announced that no more sales would be made and that customers should decide whether to leave or take shelter in the break room. The building is an old supermarket, the kind with an expansive flat roof that can just peel right off in wind, so I chose to leave. Got in my car to head home with the radio tuned to an a.m. station that gives good emergency weather coverage. Oops, turns out I was headed closer to the tornado in going home. But the tornado then changed directions, and I was in the clear. In fact, most of the rain, hail, and wind for the rest of the afternoon and night just went around my city.

The 4 guys on the YouTube channel, or at least 2 of them, seemed like very knowledgeable and experienced storm data interpreters. Even if amateurs. By contrast, the people I saw on two local stations were lame. Also easier to watch Youtube in the safe location.

There's a broadcast meteorologist in Birmingham AL named James Spann who has a loyal following. His pat saying is "respect the polygons", the changing areas drawn by NWS and superimposed over maps to show danger zones.

You're in Nashville?

We have flooding all over, including submerged cars, touchdown of tornadoes in surrounding areas, but the oddist of all, I heard somebody got hit by lightning. It's been declared a Federal disaster, and funds have been diverted to help.

And we're not done with rain, or flooding. I didn't go to work today but I might try tomorrow.

Elmer, you must be away from your So. Ca. home as we’re near enough neighbors we’d have gotten warnings also. Better come home! I grew up in coastal Va. with hurricanes. I’ll take them 100% over tornados, which cannot be accuratly predicted…very scary.

Elmer- I was in a hurry and didn't catch the fact that you were in another state. I lived in central Illinois for 15 years and went through a lot tornado warnings. Even saw one in the far distance. It is indeed scary.

As I said earlier, I'm in a Southern state this week. I'm a Cal native and almost lifetime resident. I'll just say I don't travel to experience better weather than what we have at home.

Martinca, as between hurricanes and tornados, I prefer to remain a comfortable distance away from both. Ditto for snow/ice storms and thunderstorms and cold weather, and humid summers.

Tornados scare the bejeese out of mr. Ditto with severe lightning storms. I was on a boat in a lightning storm on a Friday 13th. (I am not superstitious.)

Boat got hit and my father had just pulled the jack from the marine radio to put the cable on a grounded something. he had just released it when a hellish BANG and spark flew. Close call. Probably dumb. Screw the radio! A neighboring boat had his radio fry and a small fire.

I’ve known two people hit by lightning.

A Southern state? So you are in Nashville??? They shut down 840, 440, Briley Parkway, Murfreesboro road, Belle Meade (their main road is Harding Road)... I couldn't get from East Nashville to West Nashville. It's quiet tonight, which they did not predict. So maybe tomorrow I'll get there. I would say our flights will be up and running tomorrow.

They have tornado proof hangers for all of the B2s. There is a wing of A10s and F15s stationed there as well. Not sure what they do with those.

FYI Elmer - Whiteman AFB was named after a pilot that was killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He grew up about 20 miles away.

I don't suppose any of the morons are educated or read books so their ignorance and insult to those whose contributions to the US exceed anything they'll ever do is no surprise. Nez received a Congressional Gold Medal from President Bush.

I do know all about the Code talkers, Tuskegee airmen, the 6888th, 761st tank battalion, the Japanese American's serving in WW2 and the 54th Massachusetts regiment naming just a few examples in military history. I never needed a book on any to explain how unjust times were then, and why would you as a well educated person need a book to understand? Educated and intelligence aren't the same as you have given examples of .

All who served in the above units were volunteers with a high degree of courage and patriotism who would never look for a "safe space" to hide in. During my 6 years of military service during the 70's there was one color, OD green. We lived together like brothers and learned to love each other. No one needed DEI training to form a bond, and this bond is what prompted medal of honor recipients to do what they did, and elected not to find a "safe space" when their brothers needed help.

When I hear a person use the term bivouac while describing "a time" in the service I question their authenticity. In my 6 years not once was the term bivouac ever mentioned by anyone, and "The field" or "training exercise in the field' was the terms exclusively used. Bivouac may of been used in boy scouts but not the military, so I looked it up in the Official dictionary of United States military terms 1950 addition. Bivouac is not included as a word they used even in the 50's, so my suspicion leans me to stolen valor by that person. Elmer, I believe you're mistaken and must of been a boy scout or part of another organization where children played in the woods, but not the military service. Just my opinion and mean little disrespect.

You worried about terms? I think the Army called it Basic Combat Training. No one called it that, boot camp was boot camp just as bivouac was bivouac.

Soldiers didn't live together as brothers in the Army I was in. The racists and bigots, often from rural places or a region known for people like that, were their normal selves when someone of a higher rank was not present. Always.

Ask a person of color who was in the military in those years and ask if they encountered racists in their service. Heck, we had a guy of Chinese ancestry in my company and I heard the moron who was the platoon sergeant (drill instructor's assistant) call him the word starting with a G used as a slur for the Vietnamese.

It's "Medal" of honor," not "metal." Written once probably a typo, written a few times and you probably don't know the correct word or spelling.

Maybe not. It slipped my mind, guilty as charged, just didn't notice. Couldn't spell in school, Short term memory issue. Major blows to the head, boxing, fighting, martial arts. Heavy metals in my environment, played with lots of mercury and lead when young. I have excuses but try hard so I'm sorry and please forgive me.
