I need to stay off of YouTube. And TikTok for that matter.

I love to watch videos of food garden tours and I also love TikToks where the gardeners go out into their gardens and harvest their goodies for the day.

Well, this also tends to make me think! OH! I want that in MY garden!

Every year I always find SOMETHING new (to me) that I want to try to grow. So far, these wild ideas have not been successful. I am not the greatest at growing food

TREES though, so perhaps its just me.

The pawpaw trees I planted remain barren, naked little sticks in the ground, as do the pluot trees.

The avocado tree that was supposed to be cold hardy disintegrated.

The satsuma tree that a driver from further south brought me gave up and died.

No need to bring up the guava tree, ice cream banana tree or goji berry experiments. I should have known better. Stay in your ZONE Amylou!

The pineberries grew but were gross.

I do have some victories. The pink lemonade blueberry bush has done well. I bought it of course because it was a pink variety. I suppose it success was due to all the good pink vibes around it at my house. I got a dwarf mulberry that seems to be doing okay. No fruit yet but its alive! And one of the plum trees I planted a few years ago is thriving, though the fruit gets to be about as big as a dime before it starts to turn color and then fall off. I have NO idea what to do about that so whatever. The grape vines were doing great until the power company sent its goons out there (to the WRONG ADDRESS) to spray herbicide indiscriminately and killed them. Oafs.

This year, I discovered the Black Beauty tomato. On first sight, it looked akin to those rainbow rose seeds you see scammers selling on eBay. Very unusual looking but attractive. But I did some research and then ordered a plant from a seller on etsy based in California. I also ordered a "Blue Berries" cherry tomato plant from the same seller, and will plant the two instead of the normal purple varieties I plant this year. A big step because my favorite cherry tomato is black cherry, and I am forgoing that this year to give these a chance. They arrive tomorrow. I am excited! I do hope though, that if they are going to fail, they do so immediately, so that I will be able to plant my purple regulars. But I hope they are a success!

What new varieties of food crops have you tried over the years? Did they grow or fail? Were they better than what you normally plant?

Wouldn"t it be efficient, and fun, Fun .. if the fertilizer were included!

My gardening has produced poor results in recent years, as I plant quite a large number of seeds, but often only a few grow.

Do you think that it might help were I to save toilet paper?

Which reminds me of a thread that I made here, a number of years ago: did you see my " First research result: successful recycling of toilet paper!"

And later had to apologize, saying that recycling requires reprocessing, but not my situation was simply reuse of the original materials.

I don't plant food crops at my current house because of lack of space, but I would like some flowers like cosmos and zinnias so ordered some seeds today. One of the blogs I follow showed how to make seed tape with toilet paper. I think I might give that idea a try.

Hi Diane. Well. I dug up lots of minis. Some that I lost tags for and ticked. Some I just resoiled and like starting over. But I still got lots of minis that I got last fall. Lots of Wells. Lots of Robbies. Franks. A couple of Clemons. Bridges. Both of Bob Martins. Some I got on fortuniana too. You know. I got my Giggles close. Like paired. Big Girls. But then I space the next set of roses. Anyway. I keep them clean inside. I cut off any canes that are not 95 percent A+. We live together fine with other roses. Then there are roses like, I lost tag but I think its Spring a Comin'. Got it from Robbie I am almost sure. Think its a Wells rose though. Anyway. I do love that rose. Its a perfect rose for children. Its almost throneless. But a rose that grows like that hogs and really gets too wide for this garden. I would like roses that grow like that...wide and sort of lax and free be moved to a separate garden. Roses that are stiffer and large and up growing I can handle the cut back and controlling. I think. Then I got a Mary Maud in there on fortuniana that I am fearful of moving that is a monster. I want it too moved out to more garden rose. Its such a heavy bloomer and so faithful I want to keep it. I grown new minis in two and 3 gallons since fall and not really feed a lot. Waiting to put in the mini garden that are for more exhibiting type roses. But I still do not know the personalities. I sure hate planting and then moving. Sure wish I could see these in gardens. But can't. I just am going to have to plow me another spot. I see no way out of it. I am not going to pot grow. Too hard. Seems reading the parents of some roses helps understand some personalities. Like most Franks off springs I can picture. But other breeders I not figured out. Lots of Robbies grow Tall and not hog. But that does not mean won't. I guess if you do not see these roses than pot growing or spacing is playing it safer huh. Planting sure was simplier when a mini was a mini and you knew a mini. But. These mini floras are so pretty.

If anyone likes hard seltzer now and then, I found one I really like that is very refreshing in summer. It’s called Truly, and is similar to White Claw, but I like it better. The citrus flavors are my favorite....a mix of grapefruit, lemon, lime and orange. Only 100 calories, 1 g sugar and 2 carbs. I don’t usually even drink carbonated beverages, but this seems very light for a refreshing change after working in the yard in the hot summer.

Same as Amy....I don't deny myself anything if I want it and have the money. I do give consideration to whether or not I really need it, and sometimes I talk myself out of things....like another horse. I like going to thrift shops, auctions, yard sales, etc. My waterlilies and contemplating new ones that I want, and crosses that I want to make. Antique rose cuttings and planning for new ones and getting together with the Rose Rustlers to share cuttings. I eat what I want, when I want it. I don't diet or worry about gaining weight. I like sleeping with three or four of my cats. Walking with three of my dogs...the ones that mind the best and will stay right with me or immediately come back when I call them. I have wanted to walk in the Nati'l. Forest, and now that hunting season is over, I plan to do that...just hope I don't get lost like I did a couple of weeks ago, when I thought I was taking a short cut home, and ended up deep in the forest and stuck in the mud...at 9:30 at night with a dying phone and no flashlight. I enjoy my old horses and seeing them thrive, because almost all of them came from situations of severe neglect. I love when nothing is planned, no one is coming around, and I can spend the whole day by myself and just drift around the place, looking at the waterlilies, roses, fish, going to the old barn and seeing the bats in the hay loft. Fixing nice meals for my wild possums. Listening to my radio guy, who comes on twice a day.

My father used to yell at me a lot, and I think that is one of the reasons that I never yell. Of course he used to yell at my mother as well, and they would get into screaming matches, but they did not use vulgar language. I never wanted to be like that. When my father would yell at me, I would respond in a soft calm voice, and he would say, "Don't yell at me!" Then I might say, "I am not the one yelling." Of course that did nothing to calm him down. Anyway, I associate yelling with domestic fights and have never felt the need for it. I remember when primal scream therapy was popular in the 1970s, but it did nothing for me. Growing up on a farm, I had plenty of opportunities to scream as loud as I wanted, and no one would hear me, but I never did it. My brother Mike did, however, and I would sometimes hear him when he thought no one was near him. To me, it was funny. When I was a teenager, my favorite way to express my feelings and frustrations was through writing poetry, but getting anyone to read my poems, let alone understand them, was not easy. However, I did have one English teacher who appreciated them, and I used to give them to her when she was at the beauty parlor with my mother. I was lucky that they had appointments at the same time.

I haven’t been planting many new food plants lately. The critters, especially the deer, are winning the battle. I have the Pink Lemonade blueberry. Added some more last year since they are so tasty. They are currently doing very well. The safe date here for the last Frost is April 15. Nothing in the forecast, hope it stays like this. It’s a pain to try to wrap them all up for protection. The little blueberry bees have been out.

We probably won't grow anything this year, but your enthusiasm reminds me of my neighbor. A couple of years ago she went to great lengths to plant all sorts of stuff. One day she came over and held out her hands full of beets. She grinned, and said "look, I made food."😁

I left behind a beautiful and giving yard in our previous home. Thinking I could start here, I planted a fig tree, avocado, yucca, pineapple, guava....all to be run over by an over eager lawn guy. I will attempt to do plantings in the fall after doing some research for our area. The potatoes are growing though as well as the galangal. Little victories.

Yesterday I planted a dwarf Northern Spy Apple tree my son got me for Christmas. A few years ago I planted two dwarf persimmon trees, so far, they're doing good. One produced fruit the first year and the other the second year. Planted a dwarf peach tree last year and it produced a massive amount of peaches. I wasn't expecting any for a few years. I have two cherry trees too, bought 2 years ago, I think? So, far no fruit but they're still alive. They're behaving more like I thought they would.

I'm trying two new varieties of tomatoes this year, Dad's Sunset and Orange Accordian. So far, the seedlings look healthy. Most of my tomatoes did lousy last year, except the Sungold, which kept producing into November. I had two plants and last week finally used up the last of them from the freezer in a soup.
