I'm grateful for

A few months ago I started working a second job so that I could hang out with people from all walks of life (my full-time job is with a very specific section of society), but also because I wanted to move more. Today, on my way to get my real id, for which I'm really grateful!!!!, I was able to find easy parking in downtown Nashville (typically not easy), and then go up and down all kinds of hills as I walked to the appointment. Thank you for lots of moving! It was easily traversed. It was so beautiful seeing all the new buildings that have been built. I'm typically a "nature person", so it was unusual to be very grateful to see all the new buildings. They're beautiful! And I've lived here for so many decades, it was nice to see something new. I would say I'm doubly, but it's more like quadruple or quintuple or far more.... That I had an appointment for my real ID. I think it took me all of about 15 to 30 minutes? As opposed to people who hadn't made an appointment, and the wait time was supposed to be two and a half hours. I had the easiest, most fun morning (day? I went to lunch with a friend who has also has a birthday pretty soon, and it was good food, for instance). Maybe I just had a great day! I'm grateful for my day.

I'm grateful I didn't end up in the hospital on Saturday afternoon. As I've mentioned here before when Covid started in March 2020 I quit the gym and started hiking the Appalachian Trail 3.5 miles a day. So doing around 100 miles a month, next week will mark 4800 miles and I fell one time a few years ago actually tripping over my pole. Saturday afternoon it was slightly warmer but the trail was muddy with many icy spots which I tried to circumvent. I thought I was fine and suddenly I slammed down on the ice so hard my hat and mittens flew off. I couldn't breathe because the wind was knocked out of me, but after sitting on a log awhile I made it the last two miles to the car. But as much as I hurt and still do, I was so glad I didn't hit my head, break a limb, or hip or my phone. It's my middle back and pain radiates to my extremities when I reach up or down. I'm living on ibuprofen and CBD ointment my son brought over. My daughter said....do you know how old you are? No sympathy there.

Ignore the daughter. Keep moving. It's probably BECAUSE of the strength brought about by regular walking that you didn't hurt yourself seriously. Would she prefer a gloomy, sedentary, moaner constantly wittering about how old she is? That would be tedious for everyone.

I'm grateful for the variety of ideas and opinions that people come up with here on the KT. Plus their general concern for one another. Sometimes when we hear the bases upon which an idea that we somewhat disagree with is based, we find that we have more in common than we thought in the beginning. It's easy to ask for, or promote, or pray for such a thing as, "Peace", for example. But "Peace" doesn't happen in a vacuum. It doesn't appear like a peach in midair. Peaches require a tree with roots, a trunk, branches and leaves in order to happen. If we don't have a root of justice, available to all, plus a trunk and branches of a yearning and search for understanding and the leaves of compassion ... ... we can cry, shout, pray or yearn for the peach of "Peace" all we like ... ... but we ain't a gonna get it! Good wishes as you do all of the necessary things through these closing days of the year. And, if Christmas is important to you, may you have a truly wonderful, happy and meaningful time, this year. ole joyful

Yeah we get freezes throughout winter and the roses actually do just fine. They seem to like the cold better than my 100+ degree summers. I get a lot of dieback and sometimes complete death in the summer due to sunburn. But I've never lost a rose to winter freezing temps. Of course, we don't go much below 34 degrees and not usually for a very long period. I've also got a lot of succulents in pots on my porch and breezeway. I don't believe I've ever lost any of them. The only things I've lost to freezing temps are the Martha Washington geraniums and any coleus I might still have left. Roses are pretty tough. They can survive a lot of different adversities. And they really seem to like the cold. I also have roses blooming now. My winters are much colder than your normal ones in SoCal. And even so, I'm finding most of them don't really go totally dormant even in our coldest yrs. They have a lot more disease right now, but it's nice to just get a few bloomers here and there before spring hits.

Wow, I can imagine how fearful you were to go under general anesthesia, especially with hemorrhaging and dropping blood pressure! But thankfully you were at the hospital and in good hands. I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, which may have been a fetus medically, but was of course, a potential child, to you and your husband. The fact that you did get pregnant naturally, is a good sign. It means that you are not infertile, so I'd think your chances of a successful pregnancy, whether natural or through IVF, will be great, since you have proof that you were able to conceive. Take the time you need to recover physically and emotionally, then look forward to planning your 'rainbow baby,' with all our best wishes!

Sibling relationships can be a mixed bag. I am super close to my twin sister. Although we don't live close, we keep close by texting, talking and Instagram. My older sister is another story. I don't want to get into all the quirks. Both my twin and I just have to accept that we will never have a relationship with our older sister. We superficially keep in touch, but things can't be forced. No falling out per se, just totally different ways of thinking. My brother now lives an hour from my twin sister, so, they see each other often. I keep in touch through emails and I also have a relationship with his wife. dH does not like my brother. Different political views. I am going to have to work around this if I want to visit my brother in the near future. I don't particularly care for my DH's sister. Again, very different viewpoints, but with her it is our differences between what is right and wrong. But, she is all my DH has left, so she is in our lives. But.....getting back to our the theme of this thread. I am grateful that I am going to meet my cousin in the city today. I don't see her often and this was planned for a while. I am grateful that the weather is conducive to walking around the city today. Most of all, I am grateful that I CAN walk as far and as long as I like.

Lily, ouch! I hope you went to the ER or your doc to make sure you didn't crack something or have an injury that can be treated. I also hope you have a way to call for help should you need it and are able to make the call. Or have someone keeping track of your time on the trail to make sure you get home.

One of my good friends who is a really active hiker, tripped on a tree root on a trail (luckily she wasn't alone), fell hard and broke both her legs just below the knee. She's 69 and was laid up for quite a while. Will have to have knee replacement on one leg because she smashed it so hard, but has to heal more first. The other leg has plates and screws to keep it all together. So, I hope you don't have any more falls.

Reading all this makes me grateful that my BIL didn't kill himself being thrown from his horse the other day! He is mid-60s age and was thrown, then he kept hurting and finally went to the Urgent Care and they just said he strained muscles and gave him an RX for the pain. He was very lucky it wasn't more serious!

I've been very lucky when I've fallen to not have injured myself badly. One time my dog cut in front of me and I stepped on my shoestring and fell right on my knees and chin. No serious injuries, I fell on pavement! UGH! Then the other day I slipped on ice and hurt my finger, got lucky that it didn't break it!

Lily I hope your pain goes away soon. While you are lucky that you did not break anything, back pain can be devastating.

My morning prayer begins EVERY time with ’thank you for letting me walk.’ There was a time that I thought I would never walk again, but a skilled surgeon got me back on my feet.

Four years ago, I added ’thanks for letting my gs walk.’ He tested positive for SMA as a newborn; SMA is a hereditary muscular degenerative disease. However, with a one-time treatment he shows no symptoms yet.

Then, last year my son had a lot of back trouble but through the work of another skilled surgeon, he’s walking again. So I added his name to my list.

Walking is what I’m grateful for. 🥰

lily -- Can you find a hiking buddy? I'm SERIOUS! Can you at least wear an SOS device so someone could come find you?

Do you all remember when I fell on my face in a parking lot two years ago -- and dear bpath not only witnessed it, but came to my house to check on me? I thought I was only bruised. (Not so fast, lady.) After the docs tried a new bone strengthener on me -- and I had a disasterous and painful reaction in my bones -- I discovered I'd broken a lower incisor when I fell. This is Two Years Later!

I’m grateful that my husband only required 9 stitches in his hand rather than breaking a hip when he slipped on some rocks a couple of weeks ago while on holiday in Cancun. I’m grateful we always travel with insurance.

I’m grateful I travelled a lot in my life.

I’m grateful for being raised by wonderful parents.

I’m grateful I got to see the USA from east to west and from Canada all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico in my lifetime.

Today, I am grateful for the warmth of sunshine. Last week was brutally cold, but yesterday & today is glorious!

I'm thankful for the little chutes the daffodils are pushing up, indicating Spring will be here soon.

I'm thankful for the doctors/surgeons/nurses that provided care for my granddaughter yesterday as she underwent surgery for a torn ACL & meniscus. Everything went smoothly, although longer than expected. I'm very thankful for her good spirits through all of this!

I'm thankful to live in a less than perfect country, where I am able to make a living, support my family. Things in this world may not be how I would like, but the control is not in my hands.

I am blessed beyond measure.

Reading some more stories made me realize how lucky I was. Senator Kramer slipped on ice has a bad brain bleed and concussion and is hospitalized. I am still really hurting but my daughter who fell training for Boston last year thinks she broke her rib and was in pain for weeks. I'm not a doctor but I think all my pain is muscular. Any sudden movements hurt. I don't want to go to Urgent Care and be around COVID and flu people. Same for the ER. I may message my doctor on my portal tonight and ask him.

For those who mentioned. I am alone but not really since my husband is in the area. We don't hike together because I am much faster than him. If I didn't show up at the car, he'd know something was wrong. But he wouldn't have to wonder because my iPhone is always with me since I listen to music and I could call him. I also have my Apple watch which I never take off. It has a fall feature which for some reason didn't activate this time. But I can. The only other time I fell in 20 seconds it said It looks like you have fallen and you need help. Then below are two features Yes I have fallen and no I haven't fallen. If you don't indicate in 30 seconds they call your contacts and 911. >>>>Edited it add..Olychick how horrible about your hiker friend. Hope she makes a full recovery and gets to hike again.
