The results are in.....

My surgeon called me today with the pathology results. Yes, it was cancer. No surprise there. It was the most common kidney cancer and very slow growing. He got good margins. No further treatment (such as chemo) needed. In 6 months he’ll want to do another CT scan.

so my results are in from the lab. We have about 2000sq/ft. It's at least 20 years old KBG/Fescue mix in Northern VA. any tips/recommendations? Since I need more (K) I was thinking of using Scotts Winterizer in Sept, Oct and Nov. I am open to Organic alternatives as well, where can I find some? I've also begun adding Milorganite to the mix to help with the organic matter. there is also quite a bit of thatch, hoping that manual aeration will help this Fall. Qhat should I put down after, I heard I can disturb weed seeds by doing that.

Adding manure will lower soil pH, but not dramatically. Adding compost will improve the tilth of your soil, however, it takes some effort to mix heavy clay soil with compost. We also have clay soil, & I add compost made from tree leaves, every spring. I wait for the soil to dry out, and break up the clay with a garden fork. I have also used a 4 prong tool that is twisted, using both hands on a double handle. Sorry, I can't remember the name of this tool, but it works pretty good on heavy clay. After the clay has been broken up, I dump on some compost, typically 5 gallons per 20 square feet, and mix it in, thoroughly. A rototiller would be helpful, but I do this manually. Phosphorus is an essential plant nutrient, and I doubt that your level of P is so high that it would be toxic to your raspberries. They will use it up, over time. Any source of organic matter will improve your soil. Compost made from tree leaves, or pine needles, pine bark fines, or peat moss. I have been working on our garden plot for 15 years, and the soil is much more easily worked, now. After the raspberries are established, you can add a thick layer of shredded tree leaves in the fall. I cover our raspberry bed with about 8 inches of shredded leaves every fall, and they are gone by the following September. I think that the worms come up at night, and eat the leaves, but I have not actually caught them in the act.

Hmmm...maybe it was not strong enough? While I don't like anything related to cigarettes/cigars (just my personal opinion) - but like nicotiana plants in the garden :) - maybe if you used real tobacco leaves it would work (not sure where you would find them thou!). Surprising, since nicotine is quite potent. maybe it works better on young rather than mature bugs?

I'm sorry it wasn't a benign diagnosis but I'm thrilled at the 'clean clear margins'. What a bonus - no further treatment needed! You are done and can put it behind you. Two years ago my sister went through a year of aggressive chemo. I wouldn't have told you earlier but I was so worried all those months, I thought I could lose her to the treatment and had quit worrying about the cancer. As it is, it permanently damaged her adrenal glands and she'll take a steroid daily the rest of her life.

So, upwards and onward. I hope you are feeling much better from the surgery and can enjoy a lovely peaceful holiday next week. I hope too the new year will be completely good for you! Thanks for sharing your good news!
