Frozen for good! Now what...
Comments (5)BP, My mother subscribes me to Canadian Gardening every year for Christmas, and from what I recall, we do get an issue in Jan/Feb. Unfortunately it take me all of 1/2 hour to get from one cover to another. I read too fast. We've had a couple of good white frosts, but no sign of snow yet. Need to get the garden ornaments in today, but other than that, the gardens should be fine for the winter. Do need to get organized a bit for some Winter Sowing. I have most of my seeds, but need to clean out last year's containers and get some dirt. Oh, can you recommend something? What can I add to the potting soil to make the condition of it a bit dryer? With our damp and wet springs, I find some of my winter sown seeds just turn to mold... Sand perhaps? This happens a lot to the hollyhock seeds. Today I'll be smashing over 25 pumpkins for the compost. The winter compost has already heated up and hopefully I'll be able to feed it all winter and keep it hot like last year! The compost is what gets me outside during the winter - I feed it 300 lbs of wet coffee grounds every week, and by spring, there's a nice pile waiting for me....See Morehow to master the waffle iron?
Comments (24)FOAS, that's a good tip, I still over fill my waffle maker sometimes. Bobby, it's all a matter of practice, soon you'll know how full and how long to cook them. I like whole grain waffles, but the kids like the fluffy white ones so that's what I mostly make. You have a recipe you like, so I say keep using that and keep practicing. As I mentioned, I still over fill mine sometimes, if I get distracted and don't pay close enough attention, and then I get that mess to clean up. Maybe less of a mess, thanks to FOAS... Comments (25)Another All-Clad owner here. For years, my waffle iron was a stove top Nordic Ware one. I reluctantly purchased a VillaWare when we had the boys, had grandparents over, etc.The stovetop was just too slow. The VillaWare was still working when DH and the boys gave me an All-Clad for Mother's Day a few years ago. I was prepared to return it but thought I ought to try it and at least be able to say it wasn't that special first. It didn't go back. The All-Clad bakes the most even and perfect waffles I've had. Never had one stick -- never had any problem with it, except making me want the All-Clad slow cooker (talked myself out of it because it's so large and the boys will both be off at college soon). We made waffles Sunday. I commented on how light they were and my son said we make the best waffles he's ever had. Not only that -- he wants some of my sourdough started so he can make them when he leaves home. Good thing that made my heart smile 'cuz it's gonna cost the pocket another All-Clad waffle iron (or two -- one for older brother). ;-)...See MoreDoes anyone like waffles?
Comments (68)Occasional waffles are fine but I don't get excited about them. I have never cared for what's called Belgian waffles around here. A standard waffle maker and a good batter, usually pop some crumbled bacon into it and a good fruit syrup on them are a tasty treat occasionally. The first time I ever heard of chicken and waffles was on Duckman decades ago and made me roar in laughter. Thought, they couldn't be serious. But I guess. I've had chicken and waffles during the same meal before but never eaten together. For me, they don't go together. Call me "un-nice" if you wish but that's my opinion and I'll stick with it....See More
