I have caught 2 tiger muskies (usually a sterile, planted, cross between the muskie [muskellunge] and northern pike, and 1 muskellunge. All were accidental catches while fishing for other another species. The muskie was caught trolling at 45 ft with downriggers for salmon. Since I have regained interest in fishing, my target species has been large and small mouth bass, northern pike, and walleye. I'm blessed to live on the shore of Saginaw Bay (part of Lake Huron and surrounded on S, E, & W by Michigan's thumb and the hand part of the mitten) where fishing for these species spectacular. Since I've never fished specifically for muskie, I can only relate what I know from my reading and the anglers that fish for them. When the the fish are actively feeding, they they can be easy to catch, but those days are few and far between, and it's only likely to happen if you know where populations of the solitary (not school fish) and uncommon are known to be present in numbers worth fishing for them specifically. I do have a story, though. Since getting back into fishing, my favorite spot to fish is a smaller bay off of Saginaw Bay. I'm typically fishing the edges of heavy reed beds close to deeper water (5-12 ft) or in shallower water along the edges of phragmites (a perennial reed grass common to marshlands, with tough stems reminiscent of bamboo). last year, fishing the reeds next to deep water, I hooked 4 fish I could not even turn. I use a bait-casting reel backed with 30 lb braid and about a 6' fluorocarbon (like monofilament but with more advantages) leader with the leader having to be 12-17 lbs minimum because of the tough reeds and phragmites. I probably caught 50-75 northern pike in this spot, all incidental to my efforts to catch bass. All 4 of the fish I hooked last year but couldn't turn were unidentified. Having been an offshore troller for all the different trout/salmon species the Great Lakes offer, I can tell a weighty fish on the line, so I can eliminate bass from the equation, as well as trout and salmonids due to the water temperature being too warm for them. My frequent companion (son) and I agreed the fish were either pike in the >15lb class or muskie. The day after this Mother's Day I hooked another extremely large fish. We were moving between reed beds and I cast the 8" rubber stick bait (Geecrack Bellows Worm in purple) to some reeds just starting to break the surface of the water. I had a strike, hooked the fish, and it immediately leapt out of the water. I knew it was a huge pike or a muskie. The fish ripped off about 25 yds of line like it was nothing before the line suddenly went slack. I said, "Darn (or something similar), I lost it". When I started to retrieve my line, it went taut again. The fish had turned to run toward the boat. It went under the boat and turned so the line was around the trolling motor, so we had to lift that clear. Fortunately there was no tangle. After a couple of shorter runs and the fish making another circle around the boat, we were worrying about how to land it because the nets we had weren't nearly large enough. As it got closer and the runs shorter, the fish was starting to wallow on the top of the water and we could clearly see it was a muskie in the 40-44" range. I could see the fish has swallowed the bait and the hook was fully in it's mouth, not a good thing when you know your leader is fluorocarbon line and no match for their dagger-like teeth. I had the fish tired, but the only way to land it was going to be by slipping a hand behind the gill plate and dragging it over the gunwale. I keep a filleting glove on board for handling big pike, so my son had that on. I was trying to guide the fish in a lazy turn back toward the boat when I felt the vibration of the line raking across it's teeth, and there he was, GONE. So, while it's still a mystery what the 4 outsize fish I lost in that spot last year were, muskie is now a prime suspect, followed by very large northerns. I frequently see the same Conservation Officer there and often talk about stuff after I'm done loading the boat. I asked about muskie catch in the spot I was fishing, but he didn't know. As we were coming back to the landing last Fri, a commercial fisherman was going back to port. We asked if OK to come alongside and got an OK. I asked about muskie in that part of the bay and he said he sometimes has 10-15 in his nets from ice-out to the end of June, so we might actually set up to try fishing for them next year. We use side planers when trolling and MI allows three active poles per angler, so we could put 6 baits in the water for muskie or outsized pike. I have never eaten a muskie or tiger muskie (all returned to water), but I have eaten a lot of pike, especially when I was growing up. They are a very bony fish but not too hard to debone. I used to fillet/debone them and my mother would grind them up and mix with bread crumbs and a bit of onion and seasoning, form them into patties, fry them in a bit of peanut oil, and served with a bit of Béchamel sauce over the top. Very mild and delicious. They can also be canned (with the y-bones in). With so many walleye in the bay now, we return almost every fish (other than walleye or lake perch) to the water. The muskie I caught trolling for salmon was 44.5" long and had a 24" girth and weighed 33-3/4 lbs. The one I lost last week was of similar size, maybe a bit smaller, so it would likely be in the 30 lb range. Al

Katie, One of the things you need to start, and it's practically free, is a compost pile and begin to compost your yard as you go along. As you cut your lawn, set your lawnmower on its highest setting and let the grass clipping remain on the lawn. This is the first step to amending your soil, feeding the worms and building up your soil. As your begin weeding your lawn you have a few choices. I chose the more difficult route, weeding by hand, it's time consuming but in the long run easier on the soil and the health of the critters that grow there and work on your behalf. Using chemicals is a fast and easy way to kill a lot of stuff (weeds) quickly, but it's expensive and the drawbacks are sometimes significant. Instead I took each weed and threw it back onto the lawn and let it get 'mulched' by the lawn mower. The same thing for produce, fruits and vegetables from your kitchen. I built a compost pile in my backyard and put most of my kitchen waste into this pile. I avoid any meats, bones and dairy, it gets rancid quickly and stinks - don't put any in your compost pile. I water the pile lightly once or twice a week and I feel the heat, well over 120 degrees, generating from the pile. In a few weeks, sometimes months, I get good rich compost which smells like rich soil, and put it back on the lawn. Another thing I like to do is to feed the worms. 'Them thar critters' are the real saviors of my lawn, so I feed them. A few times a week I get some kitchen produce, say a banana peel and a few leaves of lettuce which aren't edible and I throw it in a blender, fill it halfway with water and throw the contents onto the lawn. Same thing for potatoes and most fruit. I blend it for at least 30 seconds and the worms love it. Now and then I throw on some corn meal, just as a treat. I've managed to tick off my wife and I take about two cups of rabbit food and run it through a coffee grinder a few times a week, making a nice powder which I throw on my lawn. My worms love it. I picked up a 25 lb bag at WalMart for $7 and it's lasted me a few months. During the fall, when my neighbors rake up their leaves, I collect a bunch of those bags and store them over the winter, taking care to pull out any branches. I spray a little water in there and this makes a heckuva leaf mulch to mow a bag or two into my lawn in late fall. By the time spring rolls around the soil is nicely amended and is overseed ready! If you've saved a few bags and made the leaf mulch, you can sprinkle it over the overseeded parts of the lawn and it will help germinate the seeds, giving a richer, thicker lawn. This approach is relatively inexpensive, the greatest cost to me was the black garbage bags I store the leaves in and then the space to store them. I got some old pallets to build the compost pile, free at my supermarket. Just don't forget to turn the pile about once a week to make a uniform compost pile. If you keep at it, this isn't as much work as it sounds. In my lawn I've also used some more exotic stuff, all organic, avoiding the N-P-K approach as too commercialized (promoted by the seed and fertilizer companies). Take your time, let the worms do most of the work...

I built a compost bin nearby with builder's block from my FIL's old milk house built in 1929. We have a bunch more to collect from eastern Idaho. Lined it with a some newspaper, then a wet phone book someone threw into our trash can next to our shop doors and also a bag full of apples! Must have been my eldest son or my hubby. I couldn't believe my find. My 12 year old saves the phone books for his BSA camp outs. Good to start a fire with LOL So I guess he missed out on this one. WE get extra phone books from our neighbors who passes them out in the fall. One thing my son did was have the nerve to take one of the blocks from my compost bin to place under his snowmobile trailer's tongue when he got back. I did go out later at night to get the dog food bag and some more newspaper. Then in the morning, I could have gotten more newspaper, but didn't dare. I think the recycle people would be disappointed. Now I'm just going to ask her if I can collect her used paper. The dog food bag was a bust. Well, I have been composting for nearly two years. Most of what I know - came from this forum. I just keep reading all the time and learning! I have done one lasagna garden. It's a veggie garden that I 'layered up' year and a half ago. I understand they like the potassium in them. But now that I've come to this forum, I snip them in itty bitty pieces into an ice cream pail while listening to Dr. Phil, Montel, or Oprah. I'm behind you guys in my composting and need to speed things up! ;-) BTW, there were a lot more pizza boxes but I know DS wouldn't be interested in helping me nor waiting. Plus I put my phone number on the lids so someone calls me when it's near full. BTW, most places have appropriate sized buckets so pick-ups can be done at the same time, yet I still have full buckets to pick-up, and I am not taking up extra space under their counter. I was going to a school meeting for my 12 year old, went through the fancy new neighborhood and saw the grounds workers cutting down tree branches and all the grasses (ornamental) and they were put in piles on the lawn later to be picked up. I made a mental note to go back and ask about the grasses. I took a different route home, but made a quick left turn into the subdivision. I asked the first guy, they are from Mexico and don't speak much English, but enough to direct me to the boss. He said fine and I offered my club wagon to put the grass into. They said "No, they wouldn't fit." I have all my bench seats in it. (I loved how they talked amongst themselves in spanish to decide about taking them to where I live which is behind the new subdivision) They actually loaded all the cut grasses and raked up leaves and put them in their truck and took them to my house and unloaded them for me. I wasn't expecting such service. They said they would just dump them anyway. So, I scored big time in the goal of getting other people's mulch and having it delivered. Where is that thread anyway?! I told them they can dump more of their grasses. They weren't done with this big subdivision and they also mow the shared grassy area and little parks. So I told them feel free to dump the grass too! When the grass gets long enough to mow. Plus I got the main guy's card to have him do some pruning and other stuff for me. I think the crew was amazed that this blonde haired lady, driving a ford clubwagon was willing to load it up with all the tall grasses! Let alone talk to them, as some people in this manicured area probably wouldn't bother speaking to them. I got there early, &, being a naturally shy & bashful person, I sat at the bar & talked to the bartender about my enthusiasm for Starbucks coffee grounds, other people's leaves, etc. Gary was the first to arrive. Gary's a hoot. He's one of those people who's always sanitizing their hands & spritzing the kitchen counter with anti-bacterial stuff. He sat down next to me just as the bartender said, "I just finished making myself a pitcher of tea. Would you like the teabag?" & I said *yes*! Of course! Thank you very much! So she put it in a sandwich bag for me. Gary eyed it & shuddered. The bartender, seeing his reaction, looked at him speculatively & said, "We roasted some peanuts in the shells earlier today for happy hour. Would you like the shells?" So she & I scooped peanut shells into my sandwich baggie as Gary made faces & shuddered. * Posted by: antic_zone9 z9FL (My Page) on Mon, Mar 15, 04 at 20:13 You know you're a compost wacko (or a wannabe) when: ...you take morning walks on trashday, pretending to be exercising, when you're really scouting the free bags of leaves. ...you walk the same route again, this time with the dog, in order not to arouse suspicion because you want to snag a beautiful closet door that will make a perfect wormbin (because of it's louvers). :) ...you don't worry about working out in a gym because you get your upper body workout by forking and turning your garbagecan compost bin. :) ...your DW is actually proud of you because of your commitment to something worthwhile (although you know she wonders about your sanity sometimes!) ;) ...you're ticked off that you can't compost plastic, because it won't break down within your lifetime, but you are happy that you are composting 60% of your garbage! ...you read composting books in the restroom and wonder if the DW would EVER let you have a composting toilet in the next house. (even if it was YOU that maintained it!) ...you subconsciously thank all of those hard-working neighbors who painstakingly rake up all of their leaves so you can steal their bags the next morning! ;) ...(this has been said before, but what the heck!)
