I have several friends here from the Treehouse. I thought I would stop by and introduce myself to those I have not met. I've heard a lot of wonderful things about you!

I live in North Carolina and am married to Gary, a retired Air Force , now recruiter and fishing nut and two papillion puppies, Kyleigh and Yanni. I have MS and a spinal cord injury that has me living in a wheel chair. But I can do anything I want to do and I love life, most days! lol I am a grandma to three beautiful grandchildren that live in Maryland and Mom to two children that live out of state too, so I don't get to see family very often. I love to read, knit, crochet, craft anything, sew, feed the birds and squirrels and anything else that wanders into my backyard.

I collect miniature teasets and teapots miniature Papillion dogs if I can find them. I love computer graphics and design my own signatures and design and make handmade greeting cards.

Welcome to the KT. I live in Southern Ontario, and have two grown children. I have relatives who live in North Carolina, and I love it there.

Hello, Flynflower, and Welcome. I love your spirit, and zest fpr life. This is Dottie here, AKA Dotmom. Married to Allan for 54 yrs. Live in No. Minnesota. Had three kids, one deceased, 10 grand kids. Like you, I love to read ( murder mysteries) knit and when I lived in my own home, liked to feed critters. I hope we hear from you often. Dottie

Dear Josh, Thanks for replying! The mix is 2 parts orchid potting mix (mostly bark) and 1 part perlite. It seems to drain much better than the original mix, which seemed to hold moisture (maybe due to peat moss), and which I like to blame for the root rot in the original tree. The pot came with the tree, and it has one hole at the bottom. There is a layer of pebbles about two inches thick at the bottom of the pot. I haven't watered to the point where water seeps into the saucer -- should I? I'll definitely try out the increased waterings with full-strength Foliage Pro. I tried yesterday, and it almost seems greener today already! Pardon this rather obvious question, but how should I apply water to the plant? I have been giving 2-cup installments in a squirt bottle spaced every few hours apart. I've been misting it every few days, and letting my watering jugs sit full for a few days to get rid of chlorine. It never occurred to me to trim down the tree, but that's a good idea I should look into. Do you think I need to repot into a better soil mix? Thanks for all your input and advice. Debbie

Judith, I thank you so much for your kind words and we are keeping a few that have been able to cope on their own, but all the burdens of rosegrowing which we have experienced over the past few years have naturally pared the garden way back. We have had our share of RMV,the ravages of RRD, a myriad of fungi and insects, a blight that killed most of the Noisettes, and in the past few years, such very late and hard freezes in late spring that pruned some roses so far back, they never rebounded, so the garden began to look pathetic, and we knew we were not going to be able to maintain the laborious physical and monetary schedule we had, in the past, while acquiring so many roses and maintaining them. We needed a gardener 2-3 days per week, and sometimes more often, lots of fertilizer, pruning, using chemicals and our water bill was rivaling that of the national debt. We are slowly replacing our losses with a few evergreens, conifers, deciduous ornamental small trees and some lovely ornamental shrubs, e.g., camellias, tea olives, gardenias, etc. We still have many climbers and ramblers remaining, enough so that we will have a beautiful late April/early May show. We still love roses as much as ever and I love coming here to see what everyone else is doing but in our area secondary to the condition alluded to above, it is, unfortunately, a decision we did not come to lightly but growing and caring for hundreds of roses is a love we must leave to others.

Moving Trees (and House) Over Winter

Hey all, just wanted to update and thank everyone again for all the advice. I moved 11 trees and a few shrubs and so far (knock on wood) it looks like we've only lost one! I think the combination of excellent snow cover and solid cold all year and a very slow and late spring helped out. Still getting the last few in the ground, but all are leafing out nicely. Moving them around to the shade side of the garage was also key, thanks for motivating me to do that. That spot (above pic) is such that the morning sun doesn't hit it until maybe mid-March. The snow and ice cover stayed here longer than anywhere else. But once it hit, look out, those plants woke up in a hurry and were raring to get in the ground. The only loss was a pawpaw. It was in the smallest container, and really never looked great even before the move. If I had to lose one, it's the one I'm least bummed about. I am gonna stick it somewhere just in case though. It was also great to have some stuff ready to go, as the neighbors watched me move in and almost immediately start slashing and burning (no one wants to cut down trees to plant more, but we're talking about Norway maples and dead / hollow locusts towering over the garage, so they had to go). Anyway it was good to have sort of a symbolic peace offering that announced I wasn't going to pave the woods in concrete or anything. They still think I'm weird for leaving snags... but I have pileated woodpeckers and flying squirrels and all kinds of cool stuff back here! Over the next several years I'll be further thinning things out and adding other things. Thinking about a nice 'screen' of mountain laurel and rhodies going up the hill here (my yard is on the right, neighbor on the left, road at top of hill in back behind the MOUNTAIN of wood chips). At the top of this hill in the middle it flattens out quite nicely and has a great vantage point. Thinking of something majestic to overlook the yard. Ken - scarlet oak? Hi All! Thanks for all the reply's and information. Firstly Philodendron can go to buggery! It has run rampant down the whole left side of the fence and is taking me far too long to pull out! hahaha. I'm glad I can now curse it by it's full and proper name. :) I have avoided taking the snakes presence personally by whacking them on the head with a shovel, I am aware they are just tree's normally but that brown little tail heading into the bush's got my heckles up I can tell you, he nearly got shovelled! I had my 8 month old playing on my shoulders at the time so I was unable to act quickly but to avoid stepping on him, went back for a photo of course! :) I'll sleep better when I have taken away all the old green rubbish form our backyard and I can see whats crawling around out there. I really need to buy a little trailer to avoid the continuous pile up I manage to accumulate. The neighbours cleaned out the opposite side of the fence line at easter and I heard them squealing as they managed to knock on the head a red belly black that had found himself quite at home in the kids tree house (more commonly used by the family cat then anyone else I think). BA - Your 100% correct I have been outside today and it looks exactly as expected to be a large Pyramidalis patch quite content looking after itself! Nev - Glad that I only have killed a few so far then with the lack of green stuff! I thought perhaps I was an epic seed grower who had cultivated an albino neo and was gong to retire at 27 from the proceeds! Lisa - Firstly the parent of my little neo children is attached below! It had a little white tag stuffed into it (Hal Ellis) but I am yet to see many photo's that look similar to me. Pulled from the "to the tip" pile after reading nev's seed guide and deciding to go back and just check I didn't throw away any viable little pods, yes indeed I had and so I used them to my best advantage and the plant has also now shot a pair more pups so I can make some comparison's (in about 3 years). As for your NOID topic, I did read it and I'm still hardly worth asking about what is what! However I can help with some photo's & information I think. I would rule out Rosy Morn & Red Gold from what I have seen of them here. Sun or Shade grown the Rosy seems to stay a lot flatter then your plants and a darker dare I say deeper colour, yours appear like a pastel to me compared. I will say that the pup I took off mine last week has a similar structure but I dare say it will flatten out with time. My Rosy that is now fading is about 70cm's across mind you so it has a bit of size to it compared with most. Rosy Morn Mother - 80% of the Day in Shade. Rosy Morn Pup Shots The Red Gold hasn't nearly the size or width of leaf to match either from what I can tell. The plant I have attached at the top of this thread I had been told was Red Gold. It's only 50cm's across however & not nearly thick enough in the leaf to be similar to yours. Red Gold Measurement Pic That said there is this guy here. It had the tag when I got here, so maybe correct, may not be and it shares some likeness to your plant in structure and colour I suppose, not a hint of blue about it though. I can't really trust any of the tags I found here when we moved in anyway. Hope this helps! Gordon.

Hi Patricia! I'm familiar with MS, my husband has had it over ten years. He's in pretty bad shape, this week we will be looking at wheelchairs. He was on Avonex, then Rebif, then Copaxone, last week he was taken off everything by his doctors. Are you treating yours? I know the key is a good attitude, yours seems great. I"d love to hear more from you!

Gramzee, I am in Kernersville, a small community right between Greensboro and Winston Salem in Western NC. Jannie, I take Copaxone injections for the MS, but they are so expensive my insurance may stop covering them and switch me to another injection . They don't do much good anyway. I may decide to do away with all meds myself. The side effects are getting harder to live with. My prayers for your husband ! MS is sneaky .

Hi Flynflower. I don't post much but wanted to say hello--I am Sheila--married to Kevin--retired Air Force too. We live in Reidsville and I get over to Kernersville pretty regularly. Our doctor is over there--not many doctors around here that take TriCare insurance!! I have 2 grown daughters who still live at home and 3 dachshunds--Alex is almost 11 and Baxter and Rascal are about 21 months old.

Welcome, Patricia. I have been to Kernersville. Blue Ridge Fish Farm is there...I guess it still is. I stopped by there one time when I was on vacation to buy some koi.

I am a wildlife rehabber, so I feed any animal/bird that comes to my yard. I feed about 50 raccoons every night. Right now I have 20 squirrels, soon to be released, and 8 possums. I rehab possums, armadillos and squirrels.

I live in s/e Texas, near Galveston, altho all of my family was born in North Carolina...my mother, near Chapel Hill, and my father, near Raleigh.

Hi again. We probably have crossed paths in Kville. We go to Laurel Creek Family Medicine. They are really nice over there. I would love to meet up with you too. I always stop at Ben Franklin's when I go to the doctor--and Harris Teeter, Target, the pet store--I make it pretty much a day over there.
Boy, do we have lots in common besides the retired AF thing--I love to read, knit and crochet. I am having fits with an afghan I have been making for my mom for about a year now!! I'm sorry your health is the way it is. You seem to have an amazing outlook on life. I have health issues too although nothing like yours but I just keep on trying--I have to--I never found much use in feeling sorry for myself. I'm Nancy, and I live in Western NC..also in the foothills and near the SC border. Chattypatty and I may be neighbors, for all I know. We have two cats, Casper and Cassandra, both white but that's where the similarities end.

We garden, feed the birds, do all sorts of crafty stuff when the mood strikes. I spend WAY too much time here, just to keep up on the goings-on of some of the friendliest people on earth.
