Why do people do this?

last year

I spent the second half of today at the hospital in the big city. My friend asked me to take her because she gets nervous driving downtown and I used to work at the hospital right next door. So, she spent over three hours for a dental evaluation (teaching hospital's dental school) so I left and had a small lunch in their cafeteria and then read my book in the atrium off one of the lobbies.

About an hour before she was supposed to be done, I headed back in case she got out sooner. I was sitting in their waiting room trying to read when a woman next to me, about three or four seats down started talking loudly on her phone to someone. She and they were so loud, the entire dental lobby could hear her conversation and I could hear the other person! No more reading for me because it was so distracting.

She talked for at least 30 minutes to that person and thankfully my friend finally came out and we were able to leave. I don't understand people and why they think everyone wants to hear them talk on the phone.
