Best grapes (Any Heirloom?) for the Los Angeles region?
Comments (3)Not sure where you are in Los Angeles, but I have tried about 7 varieties in the San Fernando Valley, and most struggle severely (with survivable fruit, that is... plants do fine) in summer. Only variety that reliably makes good fruit for me when it's 110F out is Concord Grape... Fantasy, Flame, and most other dark fruits suffer and split in summer. Thompson's seedlings looks hopeful and this year looks like a good crop coming up.. however, it hasn't gotten hot yet... so I'll let you know....See MoreAny personal experiences with pet health insurance?
Comments (7)I'm about to find out. After my daughter's dog was diagnosed with lymphoma last January, she underwent surgery and then chemotherapy. In addition, she had x-rays and MRIs. All this without insurance. Unfortunately, Missy died 2 weeks ago and my daughter added up her expenses- just over $10,000. In March of this past year, my husband and I decided it might be a smart idea to buy pet insurance for our 2 dogs, ages 7 and 12. I did some research and came up with Trupanion, one of those that reimburse you directly. You can select your own deductible, of course, with a resulting decrease in premium the higher the deductible. We chose $1000 for each of ours. None of the local area vets here participate in any of the other insurance programs except for one which gives you a 10% discount on "services." Doing web searches for info about Trupanion yielded some pretty positive reviews. Last Thursday my 12 year old was diagnosed with diabetes and put on an insulin regime. Yesterday she began to have more difficulty walking than she had been and was put on other meds as well. I will be submitting the bills to trupanion and after passing the deductible, I expect to be reimbursed for 90% of the cost of exams, procedures, labs and meds. I'll let you know how that goes. If you're interested in checking out Trupanion, I can post a referral link which will credit me with a $25 charitable donation in my name if you decide to sign up. I will not get anything personally from it and NAYY.... Helene...See Moredo we have any car insurance people here?
Comments (12)With it in both names, any tickets or accidents can count against you, but again, insurance laws vary from state to state. Does he have it covered on his policy? Are you insured by the same company/agent? I sense that things aren't all that great if you expect problems on a possible pre-nup. When in doubt, CYA. I'd say get it into one name, whether that's yours or his, doesn't matter. You could ask for it as a birthday or Christmas present if it makes you feel more comfortable. Insuring two people could be more than insuring one. I'd expect it to be higher and with it in his name he has every right to drive it. You could call a different agent with the same company and talk to them but the pragmatic side of me says you are taking some unnecessary risks and if you want to continue, you should at least insure yourself. With the hesitation and fear of going for the juggler, does he have a bad driving record or something? Again, states vary, but here you could have an issue with your insurance if they find out it's in both names and only one insured. Here, I for instance will be covered by my insurance on anyone's car I drive and anyone is covered on mine. But they're also very fussy about disclosure. I bought a new(er) vehicle and parked it. I decided to put comprehensive on it after a couple months and they got all bent out of shape because I didn't tell them immediately. They figure if you don't tell them, you're hiding something. This kind of ticked me off since I wasn't driving it (it was garage and not used), but apparently there's something in the policy that I have to tell them if I buy a vehicle, whether or not I insure it. They also figure if you have a vehicle, you drive it and if there's other drivers in the house you have to let them know, whether or not they're allowed to drive the vehicle. Sub-25ers especially. It sounds like you have multiple vehicles. Depending on your ages, driving records, insurance and such, you could have enough discounts that the difference, if any wouldn't be much. The other option if you really don't want to talk to your agent is to read your policy and see what it says in there about it. Good luck....See MoreAny advice for dealing with Homeowner's Insurance? (Update)
Comments (28)A few years ago, I had a roof and siding claim for hail damage. The adjuster actually found hail damage on every side so no question about partial replacement. Good thing as the house had aluminum siding in a wider width that isn't available now. The adjuster who came to the house was a private contractor who did not actually work for the insurance company. He noted the damage on the exterior, measured the siding and roof section by section, and plugged all the information into a software program. He had a portable printer with him and printed out the complete damage report on the spot for us to review. The info was quite detailed with cost per square foot for each component , listed section by section, probably totalled 10 pages. He wrote us a check on the spot for actual cash value of the damage. I don't remember the amounts but I think the first check was around 25% of the estimated replacement cost. I don't know if he was especially thorough because he was a contractor but he asked about interior damage and we were paid for the water damage to the ceiling and wall in one room. Our adjuster told us that we could hire a public adjuster if we chose but we thought the report adequately covered the damage. The only issue I had was a misunderstanding about the replacement siding. I did not get the complete replacement cost amount as I chose to use vinyl siding instead of aluminum. They had no issues paying replacement cost for upgraded vinyl. My suggestion is to ask the insurance company to provide a detailed accounting of their estimated cost to repair. You can also ask them for the names of contractors in your area who have worked with other policyholders. I wouldn't necessarily use them, but an estimate from a recommended firm might assist in getting a more realistic settlement. In my area, the insurance company rate was around $375 per square for roof replacement but may be more now with increased material costs. Also, make sure your estimate includes debris removal and whatever you had to do to secure the damaged area....See More- 2 years agolast modified: 2 years ago
