Nosy question about deaf people interactions

Is anyone on here deaf? How do you feel about interacting with non-deaf people... who can't sign? I have encountered two deaf people this past week. One just kept saying repeatedly, I can't hear. I was merely looking his direction to make sure he was still good, and didn't need help with anything. We ended our interaction with smiles and signing thank you to each other. The other, I caught that she was talking only to herself, but in the tone that someone sounds when they speak, but have been deaf for most of their life (all?). We too ended this interaction with both of us smiling and saying thank you in sign. Are you timid? Bold? Get frustrated when trying to communicate?

I have been thinking about them a lot and I really wish I knew ASL. I am ready to ask them how they are doing and answering with fine, good, or so-so if/when I encounter them again. I hope it puts them at ease ;)
