I have never known a dog that wouldnt take the chance to roll in something nasty.

Dog perfume has got to be a ridiculous first world thing.

Everything else is so many homes smells of some artificial smell, so why not the dog, too.

Ugh another "scent " assault the sinuses 😡

Whenever we would have our dogs groomed, the groomers would use some type of scent - either in the products or after, and they would roll around and rub against furniture when we got home - trying to rub it off, I think.

I'm also guessing this isn't a scent any dog would ever enjoy.

I remember, 50 years ago.....owning a German Shepherd Dog. She was well loved and .......I bathed her in baby shampoo, as to not sting her eyes. Then weeks later, I'd spray her with doggie perfume, purchased from the pet store to neutralize doggie odor. Because I LOVED hugging her big ole' self....and she had "doggie odor". A well known smell they have bred out of a lot of dogs today. I also gave her Milk Bone treats to give her better breath & help clean her teeth.

I used to watch (and tape) the Mother Love Show in the early 1990s, which was only shown (on Fox, I think) in three or four target markets (L.A., NY, Houston, Chicago) to see if it should be broadcast nationwide, but it never was. However, I still loved it.

One episode was titled "Women who love their dogs too much." On this episode, dog perfume was shown, and Mother Love decided to try some of it to see if she liked it. First she sprayed the female dog perfume in the air, sniffed it, and decided that she didn't like it. Then she sprayed the male dog perfume in the air and said, "I like the male smell of a dog," and thought maybe she had found a cheaper source for perfume. Then they told her the price, which was much less than $100, but still more than Mother Love wanted to pay.

Anyway, dog perfumes have been around for quite a while - more than 30 years at least.

I don't find that healthy, clean dogs have an offensive odor. Or, even much of a perceivable odor unless you put your face up against them. People who walk around lugging their dogs in carry bags or in their arms everywhere they go have real problems, and it isn't the odor of their dogs.

Yuck. My dog gets groomed now at a place that they spritz him with some kind of fragrance. Luckily it isn't super strong and disappates quickly.

I've been using bars of soap to bathe with for the last couple of years. Trying to get away from using so much plastic. Well, my son left brand new body wash and shampoo at my house when he came to visit. I tried the Irish Spring body wash this morning and it was so strong, had to wash it off and tried to use my soap to get the smell off me. I could still smell it on my hands long after I got out of the shower. I don't know why products are so strong these days. Or am I just getting old?

For me, all dogs have offensive odors, clean or not, and I especially do not like their breath. Wet dogs are the worst for spreading odors.

I have a very sensitive nose, which might be one of the reasons that my allergies are so bad. Kevin, however, cannot smell many things that I do, but our brother Mike is as sensitive as I am. Lots of odors will cause Mike to throw up.

A freshly bathed dog should smell like a freshly bathed dog when dry. Not a bad smell. My dog is very small Papillon with hair that keeps growing so needs to be cut. She isn’t double coated & doesn’t shed ”like a dog” but loses hair like people do. So, it’s not like hugging a 50lb + big ’real’ dog - but she is a dog. I will agree with Lars that wet dogs don’t smell great but how long or often do most dogs stay wet? Human shampoos aren’t great for their skin & in some cases can create or exacerbate any skin conditions they might have. Dog owners should buy dog shampoo. Perfume for dogs has to be torture for them with their superior ability to smell things we can’t. I don’t use any scented dog grooming products. I also don’t use febreze products, fabric softeners, air scenters - plug in or stick type. They all make my nose itch & some aren’t good for air quality IMO. I do have air purifiers in bedrooms & main rooms of my home & furnace / AC filter is changed at 3 month intervals.

I remember many years ago when I was a kid, we had poodles and they went to the groomer, this was in the 70s. They used doggie perfume on them at the groomers. So, not a new idea at all. They also used doggie nail polish :)

Kath, that irish spring soap is the most foul and strongest smelling soap in the store. I dont know how or why anyone would want to use it. It smells like you bathed in pure toilet cleaner! Just awful!!!!

And, on the subject of doggy odor....if you have a dog with hound in their genetics, there is nothing in all this world that will make a hound dog smell like anything other than a hound dog. You dont want to hug most hound dogs. LIttle fru fru Princess is one thing, but an organic hound dog is quite another. True, even if the dog is not all hound.

I think that, if a person sprays their dog with perfume, the person deserves a good snapping bite!

Perfume is for girl dogs, Cologne is for male dogs...
