Simple dessert for a barbecue
Comments (24)I have made this recipe seveal times with fresh and frozen fruit. I have used several different berries, all of it delicious. The recipe came from Smitten Kitchen, who adapted it from All Recipes. Here is a quick and easy recipe I have made several times. Blueberry Crumb Bars Adapted from AllRecipes.com Recipes like this make me wonder why I donÂt use AllRecipes.com more. After seeing a blueberry crumb bar on another site, I immediately wanted to make them but the first recipe seemed overly fussy. I knew there was a simpler way to do it, and lo and behold, All Recipes had it. Once I swapped the shortening for butterÂof courseÂand dolled it up with some lemon juice and lemon zest, they were just as heavenly as the 176 commenters promised theyÂd be. I could imagine easily swapping another fruit or berry for the blueberriesÂIÂm especially thinking something tart like sour cherries or cranberries in the fall (IÂd use orange instead of lemon with cranberries). But if you have blueberries on hand, do not miss a chance to make these. These are easiest to cut once chilled, and store even better in the fridge than they do at room temperatureÂsomething unusual for cookies! Yield: I cut these into 36 smallish rectangles 1 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup cold butter (2 sticks or 8 ounces) 1 egg 1/4 teaspoon salt Zest and juice of one lemon 4 cups fresh blueberries 1/2 cup white sugar 4 teaspoons cornstarch 1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease a 9Ã13 inch pan. 2. In a medium bowl, stir together 1 cup sugar, 3 cups flour, and baking powder. Mix in salt and lemon zest. Use a fork or pastry cutter to blend in the butter and egg. Dough will be crumbly. Pat half of dough into the prepared pan. 3. In another bowl, stir together the sugar, cornstarch and lemon juice. Gently mix in the blueberries. Sprinkle the blueberry mixture evenly over the crust. Crumble remaining dough over the berry layer. 4. Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until top is slightly brown. (This took an extra 10 to 15 minutes in my oven.) Cool completely before cutting into squares....See MoreDessert Chili for Cook Off?
Comments (9)I'm thinking some kind of warm apples in a crockpot to spoon over cake and/or ice cream - I don't have a recipe but I'm sure someone would. Just a couple of other ideas - I haven't made the pumpkin trifle but I enjoyed it when my neighbor made it. Spiced Chocolate Budino Recipe courtesy Giada De Laurentiis 3 boxes store bought chocolate pudding mix 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 small orange, zested 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes Candied Orange Peel, for garnish, recipe follows Make the pudding according to the package instructions. Add the cinnamon, orange zest, and red pepper flakes before chilling in a large trifle dish. Before serving, sprinkle the top with chopped Candied Orange Peel. Candied Orange Peel: 1 large navel orange 3/4 cup sugar Using a vegetable peeler, cut the orange part of the peel from the stem end of the orange down to the navel end, forming long 3/4 to 1-inch-wide strips. Bring a heavy small saucepan of water to a boil. Add the peels and cook for 1 minute. Drain and then rinse the peels under cold water. Repeat cooking the peels in the saucepan with fresh boiling water and rinsing under cold water 2 more times. Stir the sugar and 1/2 cup of fresh water in a heavy small saucepan over medium-high heat until the sugar dissolves. Bring to a boil. Add the orange peels and simmer over medium-low heat until tender, about 15 minutes. Using tongs, transfer the peels to a sheet of parchment paper to dry slightly, about 1 hour. Yield: about 10 candied peels Pumpkin Gingerbread Trifle (Recipe Courtesy Paula Deen) ===================================================== 2 (14-ounce) package gingerbread mix 1 (5.1-ounce) package cook-and-serve vanilla pudding mix 1 (30-ounce) can pumpkin pie filling 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/3 teaspoon ground cardamom or cinnamon 1 (12-ounce) container frozen whipped topping (or whipped cream - whipped cream is better!) 1/2 cup gingersnaps, optional . Bake the gingerbread according to the package directions; cool completely. Meanwhile, prepare the pudding and set aside to cool. Stir the pumpkin pie filling, sugar, and cardamom into the pudding. Crumble 1 batch of gingerbread into the bottom of a large, pretty bowl. Pour 1/2 of the pudding mixture over the gingerbread, then add a layer of whipped topping. Repeat with the remaining gingerbread, pudding, and whipped topping. Sprinkle of the top with crushed gingersnaps, if desired. Refrigerate overnight. Trifle can be layered in a punch bowl. serves 15-20 My notes: 1. Cut ingred by half, this makes a large amt. (2004 to fit into my trifle bowl)...See MoreBarbecue Sides?
Comments (47)Our bacon is different, too. I've read that British bacon (what we might call ”back bacon” if it were actually available here) is from the loin, cured but not smoked, and served ”grilled”. The pictures show grill marks. American bacon is strips of pork belly, often (usually?) smoked, and usually fried in its own fat, though sometimes it's done laid out in a pan in the oven, when a large amount is wanted, still sizzling in its own fat, or (ick) suspended on ridges, platforms, etc., to drain off the rendered fat while cooking to make it into supposedly healthier cardboard when it's still cured and smoked and nowhere near a health food. (“Canadian bacon” is an American (USA) designation for back bacon (eye of loin) that is fully cooked (cured and smoked), which originally came from Toronto, according to Wikipedia. In Canada they do have the same kind of pork belly bacon we do.) I wouldn't be surprised if the grill was kept separate in British ovens in large part for grilling that bacon....See MoreNeed a good pecan pie recipe (or other Thanksgiving desserts)
Comments (42)Coming back to this thread to thank everyone for their recipes. I made 2 pecan pies. One with corn syrup (as I've done in the past), and @arcy_gw's mom's brown sugar pecan pie. My plan was to make the brown sugar one early and have my family taste it, but I never got to do it. So I made both for Thanksgiving and had my guests do a taste test. Arcy's recipe won hands down. I will be using that recipe from now on. Thank you @arcy_gw! I also made @chispa's recipe for lemon short bread cookies. They were delicious and oh so pretty. I was a bit skeptical about that microwave lemon curd but it worked and was delicious. Thank you chispa! And @Bluebell66 's caramel apple bars. My DH declared them one of the best desserts he's ever had. And, finally the full dessert table - Apologies for the dupe pictures from the other TG thread, but wanted to thank people here....See More- 2 years ago
