I've had a visitor too, just not very well camouflaged. They're in my yard, but my neighbor took the picture.

Green snakes are my fave - I used to want one for a pet when I was little 🙂

I remember having "grass snakes" in our yard when I was a kid. Yes, we called them grass snakes too. I lived in Texas, east of Houston.

this is my little "pet" snake. she lives under the ramp off the deck that the dogs use to go out into the yard. the dogs are very respectful and give her a wide berth. she's an eastern hognose snake, a/k/a "drama queens". when they feel threatened, they will curl up, spread out their heads and hiss mightily looking for all the world like a tiny cobra. in the second photo, she has her head spread because the giant dinosaur was checking her out. if hissing doesn't work, they will go belly up and play dead.

California King Snake

I love snakes in nature, as long as they're not near me and not poisonous. Well they can even be poisonous as long as they're not near me.

Might have been Nicole that said it, sharks are exponentially less cool the closer you are to them.

I feel that way about snakes. Though, I'm not afraid of them in person if they're a cute little garter snake? Or as you're calling them a grass snake. I think I've only seen one other snake, a California king snake, in the wild. Even though I have hiked the Appalachian trail, slept in Yosemite, camped at Big Sur... I've spent time in places they would be.

Those are about my sentiments, rob. Ditto for spiders a d wasps. If the insects are in the house, I catch them and show them the window.

Apparently, there are 2 different types of green snakes in N.America - smooth and rough. rough green snakes can get larger than smooth ones.

Thanks so much, carolb! Last year I had slugs eating zinnia leaves in some potted zins.

I don’t see these smooth green grass snakes often. They like tallish fresh green grass, an I have sadly killed some when mowing. I was so peeve at myself.

I’m going to remind DH to be aware, perhaps take a long thin pole and rustle any shady tall green grass. I love these beautifyl snakes.

We have garter snakes and my neighbor further up the hill in a sunny location with rock that faces S-SW says that there are Eastern Timber Rattlesnakes around her property. The like to hide under rock a d ledge, and come out to bask in the hot sun.

I can surely do without meeting them.

Can't remember if I posted the pic here of the Eastern Racer that was in my yard, so I'll do it again anyway if I did....s/he was easily 3' long or more. Speedy little bugger!

There is one adorable little spider I will not only tolerate, I love them! I am fairly certain that it's Phidippus audax, a jumping spider. It's entire circumference is about the 3/4 of my first knuckle on my pinky. They stay on the ceiling and will move quickly around the livingroom, keeping me company. They make me think they are a ceiling rumba.

I have seen it on my way to the car, on top of the fence post and it will "wave" at me with its cute little pedipalps as I leave. I assume it's really threatening me because I am too close to it, but it looks like it's waving.

I also enjoy jumping spiders. I usually see them on the outdoor side of a window screen.

Although my 1/2 acre looks like the rainforest with no grass just flagstone paths leading to various gardens and ponds, I never have seen a snake in the 40 years we have lived here. I never have seen one on the AT that I hike every day but I did help a black snake cross the road at another wildlife park I was hiking a few weeks ago.

That’s amazing, Lily. Maybe you need to import some crickets, little micies, or frogettes.

How did you happen to help the black snake cross the road? was in on crutches? Orthopedic boot?

I helped a 6” turtle cross a country road to a pond on the other side, but while doing so, traffic suddenly piled up. I was concern that pokey turtle was going to get mooshed by a vehicle. (I hated reading that scene in The Grapes of Wrath.)

This spider is common in my area - I think they're very cool looking. They get to be about 1/2 inch across at the most. They look threatening, but they're harmless - unless you're a fly.

Spiny Orb Spider - as the name indicates, they make round webs - and they stay outside.

I mss my green grass snakes. We had a lot when we moved here in the 80's. All of the neighbors bomb their yards with chemicals, so most everything is gone. Silent Spring for sure. Mine is the only haven and our lot is only 90' x 125'.

Last week I was out picking veggies from the garden, came in and was sitting at my computer. I kept feeling something on my head and then neck. I thought it was a tick! I sat there for maybe an hour, occasionally feeling something on me. Finally I swatted at it and it fell onto my desk. Tiny praying mantis baby! He was so cute. I'm glad I didn't hurt him when I swatted at him. I got a piece of paper and took him back out to my garden.

Carolb, that orb spider is beautiful. It looks a bit like a strawberry dessert for the Fourth!

Sherry, what shamful ignorance of your neighbors. I don’t suppose they are open to listening, and there may be too many of them welded to poor thinking. I am sorry for you, the insects and the grass snakes.
