Does this rug work?

This is a 9x13 rug in a 16x22 room. After clicking these pictures, I realized that it looks fairly small. Is there any way I can make this rug work? I haven’t been able to find a larger rug that matches the color scheme of the contrasting couches. And while you are looking at it, any end table suggestions are also welcome!

The layout could be improved. Right now it's not a very inviting or cohesive seating arrangement--it needs to be tightened up/moved closer together. Another problem is that the furniture layout requires you to walk through the seating area to get to the room in the back.

Without knowing the measurements of the room, I'd try moving the sofa on the left side closer to the fireplace. Then place the other sofa on a 90 degree angle facing the fireplace. Then move one of the gray chairs on the right side of the fireplace. Not sure if the other gray chair will fit.

This would allow a walkway on the right side out of the conversation area. The rug may look and feel better with a different arrangement.

Thanks Diana Bier Interiors, LLC. I will try moving it around and see if it works. We won't be using this room for crossing as there's a back way from the kitchen. But your suggestion is worth a try. Let me get back to you.

I like the colors, but not the pattern, especially against the tiled floor and geometric lines of your table and chairs. What about this "Hamptons" rug from Home Decorators catalog? It picks up the colors and rectangles with a less flamboyant pattern. And actually, for what it's worth, I have both synthetic and wool rugs, either machine or hand-made, and wool is hands-down the easiest to clean and maintain. So don't be afraid of spending on a wool rug, if you love it it will last longer than your lifetime and still look beautiful. Here is a link that might be useful: Hamptons Area Rug

It is one and the same. Before I mess around with altering the length, I want to make sure it’s a good fit for the room. Someone in real life mentioned the leather chairs don’t work with the blue in the rug. I’ve always considered brown leather to be a neutra!

It’s the Jaipur JA 33 rug, sold on many rugs sites. I probably owe everyone an update to the thread. We're not done with the space yet. And as some folks pointed out, we probably under any circumstances have a little too much going on here in terms of function to have a totally "pulled together" look. But here's what we have now with a few of the ideas discussed upthread. 1. We flipped the piano. 2. We added a chair for sitting (currently experimenting with two chairs from other places in the house - we could use one of these, or buy a new chair) 3. We added pretty storage baskets for the kids' flotsam and jetsam. 4. I kept the rug - it seems to make things more comfortable for the kids, it seems to warm up the space, and it hooks into some of the other warm colors in the space. 5. We're not sure what do with the art / possible window treatment, but we're experimenting with the mantel and for now I tried pulling the existing art into a tighter grouping at least. (The kids added some summer artwork too - not permanent.) Anyway, it's maybe not great, but I wanted to come back and say some of the suggestions made here seem to be offer some improvement and some steps in a direction. I think the baskets helped a lot! The room is perhaps a little busy, but I kind of like all the layered textures / repeating colors, and it feels cozier. For the kids, there's a lot of places to "go" in there - and they're spending a lot of time here thanks for school in our area being 100 percent virtual through at least January. It's really turning into the kids playroom / study, so maybe that's theme I need to keep trying to emphasize. Consider turning the rug the other way if you plan to keep the couches facing each other.

Actually that's not bad, but I was thinking the sofa on the other side, facing the opening to the foyer (?) It really is a large room, and the rug does look too small.

It would be nice if the rug were a bit larger so that more of it fit underneath the front legs of the sofas. As others have said you could rework the arrangement. Good luck!

I’d get something more colorful. It’s also a lot of furniture. How many people will be sitting around staring at each other at one time?

The newest arrangement is an improvement but I would flip it. You need a darker and larger rug (I’ve had good luck with antique rugs since large ones can be hard to merchandise). You also need a LARGE coffee table and accent tables. All warm wood tones.

Thanks HALLETT & Co. I will check out antique rugs. We don't plan to have a center coffee table because it will become a dumping ground for our family. We will have multiple end tables, though. Any suggestions or ideas for some good end tables?

Shawna - yes, that's intentional. We host quite often..at least five families (10 adults). Also, the grey couches are not love seats. Just oversize single chairs.
