I much more see a black oriental rug in the kitchen with yellow and gold in it. The kitchen rug strikes me as really contemporary...and kind of busy. I thought I saw one in STURBRIDGE YANKEE catalog but am unable to pull it up on their online catalog but I am sure you know what I am describing...

Thanks, I think you are right. I will keep looking. The rug was such a good deal that I let the price kind of lead me down a path I was unsure of. Good news is that there were some oriental type rugs at that store about the same price. I will head back out there today!

I actually like the neutrality of the rug under the dining table - an oriental would be beautiful but so expected. I'd opt for something different like the rug you have - gives it a bit of a contemporary feel that I like. I think the family room rug is very neutral also so it does not fight your dining area rug.

I think you're wise to keep looking. I don't care for the way the geometrics of the rug play against the squares of your floor tile. I think this particular rug would be better on a wood floor, as it wouldn't have to "compete" so much with the squares of the tile.

I agree with auntjen... keep looking. The geometrics make me dizzy.

I think the colors are okay, but the pattern is quite busy. However, it is a contemporary look, and if you like that look, then it works alright, in my very humble, untrained opinion. I tend to gravitate toward more traditional looks, and I think an oriental rug with black in it would be beautiful.

Pleaes keep looking....it's giving me a headache! With all of the lines in the chairs it's far too busy. I think if someone dropped a fork and had to look for it, they'd get dizzy and fall off their chair....

I like the rug and the geometrics, but then I like contemporary. The rug picks up all the different wood tones in the kitchen and the dining room. I agree it is too busy with the chairs - this rug would go better under a couch rather than under a dining table. It doesn't go with the other rug in the living room as it overpowers that rug and dominates the whole area.

I don't suppose the dining rug would fit in the living room and visa versa? It looks like the living room rug is too small for the dining area?

Cao100- is your entire house done in the same tile as the two rooms that you have shown?

We tiled our entire 2000 sq ft ranch style house with tile just like that. We really like it much better than our past wall to wall carpeted houses. I have done the same as you and have added room sized area rugs.

Kitchenkelly- I got it at a place called Homefabrics. I have posted a link to their website below. If you are looking for really nice stuff then this is not the place for you. But, if you are looking for attractive and spectacularly priced then this is your place. For me, I have to have something that I will not have a heart attack every time my very messy three year old enters the room. The rug was only 150 bucks so it would not break my heart if it did not last very long or if something happened to it.

Gypsygirl- The name of the paint is Belgian Sweet. It is a Behr color.

Sipsy- Not the entire house, but almost. The bottom floor consists of 2 bedrooms and the kitchen/dining/living space. The two bedrooms are carpeted, but everything else is the tile. When we first bought the house I would have told you that it would not have been my first choice. Now I really love it. It is attractive and easy to keep clean. But boy did my feet and back hurt for awhile until I got used to it!

What about this "Hamptons" rug from Home Decorators catalog? It picks up the colors and rectangles with a less flamboyant pattern.

And actually, for what it's worth, I have both synthetic and wool rugs, either machine or hand-made, and wool is hands-down the easiest to clean and maintain. So don't be afraid of spending on a wool rug, if you love it it will last longer than your lifetime and still look beautiful.

Pretty rug but have to agree with the sentiment that you keep looking. The rug does nothing to unite or bring out the beauty of your two rooms.

I like the rug in the kitchen! Colors and pattern go really well. I'm thinking you ought to get a little brighter one for the family room instead...with some of the golds and more blacks in it too. Just not as geometric a design--a more bordered Asian feel for in there.
