How can I make this wall look less bare?
Living room/under stairs wall. Struggling to find appropriate decor to make it look less stale but not too busy, especially with the diagonal edge to the left. There is a mirror on the wall opposite. Does anyone have any ideas?

Comments (22)Not knowing the sq. footage of your space, it's hard to push you in that direction... my tile is just those three walls (can't see the the third) - as the sink is set into that space and stands alone. I think all said and done it was $400 for tile and labor - but the guy just came in to do this job. You'll be bidding out for more tile than just this.... so labor wise, it probably won't add much to your overall labor cost. I purchased at a local tile store - but was just in Lowes last night and they have some really pretty glass accents (like the one I used) -- if that's your thing. It just added a little extra interest. The wall where my towel holder is (to the left of the sink) was just full of water drip stains. You can't get them out. It was either re-paint every couple years or tile. As for your sink choice - I truly believe it comes down to the look you want to achieve. The all white cabinet, with white subway tiles and accent tiles would look pretty awesome. Comments (17)I like bakers racks, but that one just doesn't fit on the too small wall. It doesn't make sense to me. I am also confused where the stain is. I have gotten some pretty disgusting things out of old carpet and I think it would be worth trying. I would try Oxyclean dissolved in hot water, Capture, Oreck or other dry carpet cleaner (this Resolve makes one buy not sure if it is as good), a steam cleaner (you can rent, borrow or buy) or a paste cleaner (sold in a tub and reminded me of the school paste of my early childhood). My mom used to buy that cleaner and swore by it, but I can't think of the name of it right now. Comments (44)I think your kitchen is very nice, I don’t think the backsplash clashes with the cabinetry and I’m often critical of that in a lot of kitchen photos I see. You know what your kitchen reminds me of? Those rooms where a lot of different shades of whites, creams, and ivories are used... they don’t really match, but they all just go together nicely... and the thing (I think) that ties them all together is a lot of use of texture. So, for that, I like the chairs you have that are woven, as opposed to the smooth, white chairs. And I don’t think you need that tablecloth, I think the table looks just fine without it. I’d add some natural sea grass like colors and textures and some houseplants, maybe some wood cutting boards against the backsplash... any other colors I would gravitate towards would be soft blues and greens, nothing too intense....See Morehow do I make my paint look less blue !
Comments (22)I know the numbers. I also know that OP is not wrong because the numbers don't agree with her. She is seeing baby blue and it isn't because of lighting. It is because the color is blue. 10 years from now when the OP looks at her walls she will still see blue. If I were looking for a blue white which white would you suggest? I can look at the fan deck, know without a lick of analysis that Rhinestone is the bluest white. You won't find a white that measures bluer than Rhinestone, which is just barely over 10GY (144). CIE-L*Ch(ab) = 89.015 0.763 146.962° So given that none of the whites measure out as a blue white, most don't even get over a 5GY, so they are more yellow than green, does this mean the SW has only one or two cool whites and all the rest are warm whites and that they have no blue whites? To understand what is going to be seen by our OPs we have to go beyond the hue and note the Light and Chroma. The lower the Chroma the more neutral gray and the more gray the more people see blue. We perceive gray as blue. What I don't want is for this OP to be lulled into a feeling of safe or thinking that she is somehow flawed and unable to perceive color, but seeing blue for the next 10 years until she finally decides to paint again and this time picks a white with more saturation that doesn't look baby blue on her walls....See More

Despite your design dilemma, you have a beautiful lounge - love the colours and the especially the colour of the sofa :)
A few further ideas for you:
1. Textured Wallpaper - You could add some texture to this space - a white linen, faux silk a surface that will add some depth to the wall but kept in a white neutral shade to compliment the blue feature wall. Adding some greenery a decorative planter will also enhance this effect (even without the wallpaper effect)
2. Add a decorative accessory such as a throw ladder (see image below and to the right of the image covered in textured throws)

28 days agoCrying out for a lovely big picture perhaps including some of the lovely colours already in the room. Etsy have a great range of reasonably priced artwork. These are ideas but there are so many to choose from.

27 days agoI also was thinking of something using black metal framing to echo the mirror and other elements. I wonder if just embracing the angled shape by adding new ones might be a good approach. I think adding some greenery via a wall or hanging planter would also work. I’ve attached two pictures of items I’d consider.
