Comments (2)Three cheers for RCMoser! And several atta boys, too. If everybody took such good care of their equipment, they wouldn't have problems with it, usually caused by lack of care!...See MoreFinding designer to update 20-year old community landscape
Comments (17)I'm gonna throw my two cents' in here since I am a former Master Gardener (let my certification lapse because the local group was like a garden club), and as a landscape designer, I've done work with a community group to landscape the entrance to their neighborhood. All the above posts are correct about the Master Gardener program. Some Master Gardeners are professionals, but the MG certification is a part of their volunteer life. MGs aren't typically trained in design, although some clearly have a talent for it. You'll more likely get advice on plant selection and prepping the site, but you'll still need a design, and for that you should turn to an LD. Having done a project like what you're needing, I have to say it was probably one of the least pleasant experiences of my professional life, and here's why: there were way too many chiefs and not near enough indians in the community group, there wasn't a clearly defined "go-to" person on the committee, they expected a discount because they were a community group (but not a non-profit), and the day of the installation I had very well-intentioned community members bringing in their leftover lantana or newly dug-up iris bulbs or a fern that was inappropriate for the site... You get the picture. I learned a lot from that job, even though I had a clearly defined contract with the group as to who was doing what and what it would cost. My advice is to have ONE person from your group and one person only that deals directly with the designer. Figure out what your budget is, don't expect freebies from a professional, organize your volunteer group well, and respect the time of the designer. Sign your contract promptly and return with the necessary deposit. On the day of installation, please do not allow your community/committee members to try to change the design or throw in extra plants that won't work. Trust the professional advice of your designer. I learned to be more clearly defined in my work and communications with clients, and to keep boundaries carefully drawn. It can be a great community experience for everyone involved, as long as everyone involved is respectful of boundaries and communicates clearly. good luck!...See MoreShowing the 20 year old kitchen that needs wall oven now!
Comments (8)Renovator 8, we are finishing a kitchen remodel and I have placed my wall oven at the same height as Kelrobin's. We don't use our oven very often any more because we are empty nesters. We have installed a speedcook oven just above it that we plan on using several times a day. Because I am so short, we needed to put it at a height that I could easily get in and out of since it has a drop down door and not a side opening door. That means the oven that I get into only a couple of times a month, if that, has to be low. So sometimes there are very valid reasons for such choices. Kelrobin, I think you should just get the oven that you want. Consumer reports rates Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, and Bosch all very highly. We just went with the white glass front JennAir that looks similar to yours. I am wondering why you are switching to stainless when stainless seems so much harder to keep clean?...See MoreHelp! 20 year old home
Comments (10)Thank you for your response. It is about $4000 to remove the elevator. Plus I will need to replace the custom banister because upstairs there would be a hole where the elevator exit was. The flooring looks better in the images than in person. I want to replace the flooring so it all matches. The stairs, big room w wooden floor and the rest of the main floor. I think replacing the floors will give me a cohesive look. Also, the floor has these dated mosaics in the foyer, dinning room and family room. We are reworking the family room so the fireplace and TV are centered. Once we do that and remove the hearth we will gain 24" of room space. There currently is 38" of cabinet/fireplace. The floor will need to be replaced. Thanks again....See Morelatifolia
