Hand rails on torch down surface?
Comments (4)No need to add anything on top of a corectley installed torch down modified roof with all needed flashing those things are a done deal for 20/30 years or so. We lay 2x acq stringers 16'' on center in the direction of the flow with a strip of modified under them, screw decking to the stringers, not past them into the roof. Dap out the rail posts 1 1/2 x however wide the rim joists is,bolt the posts to the rim joists. The Dap out lets the post sit on top of the decking. Its a good idea to figure out what kind of surface you want to walk on a little bit ahead of time, for sure dont plan on walking on the roof. Not really sure about the siding thing, flashing needs to be behind it and over the top of the roof or melted to the flashing by another strip of modified. Comments (1)I'm not sure but it is probably the I2012 RC. A guard and a handrail are different requirements but they can sometimes serve the same purpose. R311.7.8 requires a handrail for 4 or more risers. R312.1.1 requires a 36" high "guard" at a walking surface more than 30" above grade. At the stairs a handrail can serve as the guard if it is between 34" and 38" above the nosing of the treads....See MoreAdd a newell post? Switch to wood hand rails?
Comments (8)OK, you all have convinced me to eliminate the oak look of the risers. While I'm too conservative to paint them, I'm thrilled with the many options for stick on riser decals that can be readily removed, including one with the pattern I've been nuts about for ages! It's called Astra, here. BUT -- back to the newel post/handrail for the upper section of this stairway.....previous comments were that we don't have the open wall for the spindles and we have no place for a newel post. I need to understand if the change I want to make isn't feasible, when it seems to me like it should be...please helps!...See MoreThoughts on top rail cap for glass railing?
Comments (4)I think no cap is unique and give a sleek modern touch! Cap is more classic look so can’t go wrong if you do add. 2 good options honestly but I vote no cap...See Morejuliekrawchuk
