Comments (8)"...What can I do to make these two front windows look better?..." Define what "better" means to you. Why are you concerned with the windows? That elevation of your house will be dominated by the comparatively huge garage door, which is apparent from your first photo. The photo dramatically illustrates how the size and scale of double garage doors and openings simply is larger and overwhelming anything else on a residence, especially a single-story residence. So, although you didn't ask, my initial advice would be to either replace the single large garage door with two smaller, and finer detailed doors, or, if you have to have a single large door, choose one which appears to be visually smaller and better proportioned. To make the rest of the house, and the two windows, look "better" there needs to be sufficient "strength" present to offset the dominance of the garage doors. That may be achieved by removing the two windows and replacing them with a single full height glazing unit, or something like fixed French doors with side lights. Probably not the advice you were looking for... Or simply plant several large American Holly Trees adjacent to the garage which can be trimmed as a foundation hedge or as a secure, tall privacy fence. They require minimal watering and grow in a variety of climates. Resists mildew, disease and insects. Even pruning is easy!...See MoreExterior home help!
Comments (1)You have a traditional in the front and the bones for a contemporary in the rear! I would just go with it - because no one is seeing both the front and rear at the same time..... To make the rear of the house cohesive definitely lose the horizontal siding on the second story - you could run clear cedar vertically or replace with stucco or large Hardi plank panels/rectangles. the lower windows coordinate well enough with the addition to the right however, the uppers need to be switched out. If you are insecure in making these choices yourself, I would advise you hire an architect. Best....See MoreExterior House Help Needed!
Comments (16)Thanks cawaps - I hadn’t thought about painting that siding in the bump-out a darker color than the trim to help it recede, and it’s definitely worth playing around with. Jinx - I actually like brick generally, but I think the fake “schmear” on this house is part of what bothers me. If it were a real German Schmear treatment, I think I would like it better. But I agree that painting it is a commitment and expensive, so I’m keeping an open mind. :) Love the suggestions and comments from all, so keep them coming....See MoreExterior house help
