PVC or steel for kitchen under sink plumbing?
Comments (13)My experience as a non-pro, most of the the chrome-plated brass pipes (bathroom & kitchen) used in my Chicago condo corroded and leaked within 10 years of installation, and now all the chrome/brass pipes in my home kitchen are in various states of corroding. The cp brass wall tube from my disposal just crumbled when I bumped it during an RO filter servicing, and ripped apart when trying to separate it from the J-trap. I have not had any issues with the PVC replacements, and they a third to a fifth of the price of a comparable chrome plated brass piece at Home Depot. Seems like replacement with PVC/ABS is a no-brainer if it's not visible and not a code violation....See MoreConnecting washer to my kitchen sink plumbing
Comments (6)You probably won't like this, but I'll give you the con. Washer plumbing discharge are required to be 2" because 1-1/2" often can be compromised, by volume and there are specific requirements for traps and height of standpipes off the floor and above the trap. Are you above another residence? Discretion, being the better part of valor, I would bite the aesthetic bullet, place the washer closest to the sink and purchase the adaptor for connecting the water to the faucet and drape the discharge across the short counter to the sink, which then affords you an accumulation vessel. You can safely purchase fittings and valves which will allow you to connect the water supply on a permanent basis, under the sink, through the cabinet. You can also connect the discharge to the sink waste, however, probably not by anyone bonded and insured. If you "elect" to pursue this, insure that there are NO horizontal threaded fittings. And be prepared to be running between the kitchen and bathroom to make sure that when the washer is on discharge, those vessels are not being overtopped....See MoreComplexities & choices of kitchen sink plumbing...
Comments (5)Thanks everyone. I haven't commissioned my own water test but i've read the reports from my water district on quality and I gather there's nothing particularly nasty. But more importantly, i've seen the condition of the pre-filters on my RO system after a short time and i've smelled the chlorine in the shower, so i'm convinced that a filter is needed (I've ordered the Rhino EQ-300). weissman, I checked the owner's manual of my KA KUDE70 dishwasher... Nowhere does it claim to heat its own water, although it repeatedly mentions the need for 120-degree (F) incoming water (stating the lack of which could be the cause for most all potential performance issues :-). Besides, I'll be happy to have immediate hot running water from the faucet without having to let it run for nearly a minute (so I've also bought the pou water heater :-). Still hoping for recommendations on instant hot water dispensers (near-boiling for coffee / tea ). On this, perhaps I could consider a hot-only dispenser (like the KitchenAid) if I could find a good main faucet with an integrated cold filtered water output - it seems I've seen such a thing somewhere (I'm also shopping for the kitchen faucet fixtures). Regarding the post-whole-house-filter drinking water filter, I'm still undecided... I like the purity & taste of the RO-filtered water, and although I probably miss the benefit of fluoridated water, I'm not otherwise worried about mineral deficiencies or other claims of health risks from drinking RO-filtered or distilled water (but I really don't like the wasted water aspect of the RO filter). Aquasana has offered a deal on their better under-sink drinking water filter (based upon my purchase of their Rhino unit), but I can't put it in front of the instant-hot tank or an ice maker... just over-thinking stuff, brian...See Morekitchen sink plumbing question
Comments (3)Air gaps are ugly and useless nanny-state intrusions on countertops. Bring the dishwasher drain hose through the top of the sink base cabinet and forget it. The same California morons requiring air gaps are also giving the state shutdowns and the highest rates of Coronavirus spread. Apparently things that work great in the other 49 states are lost on these people....See MoreJoseph Corlett, LLC
