Using the space under your stairs
Comments (1)The usual requirement is that "enclosed accessible space under stairs shall have walls, under stair surface, and any soffits protected on the enclosed side with 1/2" gypsum board." Unfortunately, Indiana has supplemental code provisions plus a fire code and the National Electrical Code may restrict how an enclosed electric room can be used so you need to ask the local building inspector. Don't rely on the opinions of contractors; it's your responsibility to the local municipality to build to the code, not theirs. The contractor's responsibility is only to you. If you don't have a design professional involved, don't get caught in the middle holding the bag. Remember the cardinal rule of construction claims,"the owner pays." If the only use for the space is for an electric panel I suspect the door might have to open outward if the voltage is 120 or higher or maybe panels are not allowed under a stair; I've never put one in that location since head room is usually restricted. You might not be allowed to store anything else in the space. The idea that the enclosed space cannot be used for anything is ridiculous IMHO. You will be required to fire block the enclosed portion of he stair carriage. What does the designer of the house say?...See MoreUse of space under stairs
Comments (3)I'd use it as storage. Use full extension pull out slides and build your shelves to fit. Either leave the face of the shelves open or add a panel to accent the interior decor so that the shelves are hidden from view. Or do something like this http://pipsplate.files.wordpress.com/2006/08/dsc02214.gif or this http://unclutterer.com/wp-content/uploads/mt/070531-stairs.jpg or this http://farm1.static.flickr.com/46/114269424_7b27625bc3.jpg Jim...See More2 questions (with pics) under the stairs space & figurines
Comments (17)Thank you, Palimpsest. I always appreciate your thoughts. I planned the library shelves to handle my oversized books so I think I'm good there. I'm leaning toward the plant under the stairs. I have a mirror that I don't like on the wall that I think would fit under there with a plant in front of it. Something to try at least. As for the figurines, it was never my intention to scatter them and I don't plan on buying something else to put them in. I have two china cabinets. The figurines are all in one china cabinet in my office and I am thinking about moving them to another cabinet that's in the library. That's all. This is one of those weird areas that will make some people will roll their eyes. Oh well. :) Dee, we tried her dog bed there before we put her toys there but she's so tall that she kept bumping her head. :) Plus that's not a room we hang out in so she wouldn't stay in there. She wants to be where we are. Les, there might be enough room for a cooler but we had one of those and sold it. Just not important enough for us. There's another fridge in the garage that does just as well for the wine and we have an antique sideboard in the dining room that holds all the other booze and wine. I appreciate the way you phrased the question of the figurines. Thank you. For me, yes, I love them all. I'm writer and a reader and that's what they are all. They make me smile when I look at them. I almost didn't post the figurines question because I know those sorts of things are hot buttons for people. Oh well. Ultimately I will have the cabinet built for them in my office above the filing cabinet but that is a project for down the road when there is more money to spend. For now I was just contemplating moving them to get room for another bookcase. If I don't put them in the library china cabinet then I have a china cabinet in the library that needs something in it because I'm not fond of the look of the china in there. And I've tried selling the cabinet but no takers and no, there is no where else in the house it can go. :)...See MoreHow should I decorate the area under the stairs?
Comments (6)Here's a link to the other thread you started on this subject with some replies. Have to say these new pics are helpful to see what else is going on there and it's so much nicer/prettier than your first pictures: http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/4515878/how-should-i-decorate-the-area-under-the-stairs Now that we can see more of the area and how the stairs are configured, I think I'd just arrange your furniture however it works best for the way you'll use the room (I'm not sure if you're asking for furniture arrangement help or ?) and put a small chest up against the base of the stairs. Maybe something a little vintage, not too deep? something fun and unexpected, colorful?...See Moresushipup2
