New Front Yard Landscaping

I was wondering if you could help me build a hummingbird and butterfly flower garden front yard. If anyone is available please contact me.

Weeds do come in with newly landscaped plants, and instead of complaining about it, more sensible to just keep on top of pulling them. It is difficult to mulch so completely that weeds don't have a chance, especially when you have areas of ground cover between pavers. I think it is very unrealistic to think that a new garden should be weed free, and this part of the gardening is now on you, unless you contracted to have the installer maintain the new garden. If you knew you previously had the yellow flowering Oxalis pes-capre in the old garden, you should only have expected it to remain. If it was introduced within the root balls of the new plantings, it is probably easiest to contain this infestation if you dig the plants back up and carefully comb through the roots to remove any trace of the tubers/roots. This Oxalis only gets worse over time if not watched. The fact that it is coming up both in bare spots free of plants and within new plants makes it more likely that you already had it, or it was brought in as infested top soil/mulch, if you never had it previously. The other purplish foliaged Oxalis with the much smaller yellow flowers is a common weed in gardens and nursery pots, but is much easier to control just by keeping on top of it, and not leaving any bare earth showing.

If it were me and I was going to redo the front walk I would just do poured concrete in an oval shape to mirror the bed around the trees in front of the house. That's the least maintenance. Yes, remove the yews, they should not be trimmed in an unnatural box shape for a home as natural looking as yours. Don't know what the tree is next to the yew shrubs, maybe blue atlas cedar or blue spruce? Either way, it is going to get big so you may want to move it now while you still can. It's a "specimen tree" meant to be viewed from afar, so I'd put it in the back yard, "afar" from the house where I could take it in while sitting on the back patio or looking out the back window. You could take out the front set of birches with two trunks, that is the one that blocks the view the most. I wouldn't do that, but I am a tree hugger. Where the yews and that blue green tree are, I would put some flowering trees or shrubs that would remain small, and maybe something that smells nice to greet me as I walked up to the front door. You don't say your zone, but it appears to be a 4 season area so I'd put in some rugosa roses (but that's just me) maybe mixed with hydrangeas. That's what I have in my front entrance way. Roses can get buggy, so if you want something even less maintenance, shrubby cinquefoil and low growing spirea are just about as easy peasy as it gets. "Knock out" roses don't smell as great as a rugosa but are more foolproof, depending on your zone. BTW, there are small evergreens you could put next to your house. There are some small junipers that would fit the bill, or a bird's nest blue spruce (which I don't particularly care for but some folks love). But like I said, not sure what that is by the yew hedge, it may be a dwarf for all I know but it doesn't look like it from my casual glance.

The cycad (not a palm) looks a little silly stuck in the middle of the lawn all by itself. I would prefer to see it incorporated into a larger planting area that runs to both the curb and the drive. Can't advise on much more as there is no real information to go on as to what you want or would like to do and the single photo doesn't illustrate the situation very adequately. What is the purpose of that square hole in the foreground on this side of the walkway? That looks like a broken ankle waiting to happen.........

Cecily: On my street, the entire street is made up of identical semi-detached homes, each unit separated by about an 8' strip of grass and a driveway. There are numerous little kids. I don't want to fence in the front yard, only the back yard, and that's for deer, bunnies, and people who like to cut through my backyard from the street behind to my street. Anna: here is my snazzy new address sign, with a solar powered light on a stake stuck into the planter soil to illuminate. It is a 14" square laser-cut black metal sign, which I mounted on a piece of white plexiglass for maximum visibility. Already got compliments on it from neighbors. And the white trim is the vinyl trim on the windows and the white flashing on the roof. Door is going to be changed to a fiberglass door the color and texture of light oak, with a fan-shaped light, like this. I think I'll try to keep the white aluminum storm door, as it's a very good one. Dig Doug: That is a beautiful design! My crape myrtle is Berry Dazzle, which gets about 3-4' tall and wide. I sort of imagined it with about 3 basketball-sized rocks around it, with smaller perennials or annuals tucked in and around the rocks for color and harmony with the crape myrtle. I actually have an empty green ceramic pot closely resembling the one you put next to the window, and I love that idea. Now, what to put into it? A rosebush? A dwarf spirea like "Neon Flash"? A thrill-fill-spill combination? My contractor is going to build me a little flagstone path from the driveway to the porch so I won't have to traipse across wet grass, mud, or snow. I was thinking perhaps a border of bulb flowers along the backside of that path might be nice. I should mention that I have many small to medium hostas, several beautiful smaller heucheras, and a painted fern to work with.

So... do you want to swap out the plants in your current garden bed or enlarge the area and add more flowering plants? How much lawn do you want to keep?

Plants that attract butterflies and hummingbirds are also very attractive to bees. Are you okay with bees? If you have a family member/close friend/neighbor who is allergic or afraid of bees then I wouldn't place a pollinator garden by the sidewalk.

Change the plants in my small current garden. Those flowers are gone now.

Bees arent effective to anyone my houses. Couldn’t sent the message on houzz

In the section by the sidewalk (where the blue flowers are in your photo) I'd plant coreopsis Moonbeam. In the other section I'd use coneflower Fragrant Angel and phlox Jeana. These are tough plants with a long period of bloom. You should be able to find them available locally.

If you don't have a hummingbird feeder on your deck yet, you must! Hummingbirds are fearless and they go zipping around while we're outside. It's so much fun to watch them up close.

Here is an article outlining some of the many plants that are attractive to butterflies. Be sure to also plant a selection of nurse plants for the butterfly larvae/caterpillars - babies require a different food source than do the adults :-)

Hummingbird feeders are a great idea but include plants they love as well to keep them around for as long as possible (they are year round residents in my area).

Hummers will learn to rely on a feeder so I agree with the above to also plant flowers and vines always in bloom for them. We used to travel alot and our feeders would run dry so problem solved.

We moved a few years ago but when we come back to visit, the hummers are still around for the flowers. They like many of the same flowers as butterflies.

If you plant, then they will come. It may take a while so don't get discouraged.
