Neglected tulip bulbs. Do I plant or not?
Comments (5)@ontnative I'm with you on the fact that rarely do tulips make good displays, if any, following their first year. The Darwin tulips I one year continued to bloom as well the second year. I've still got a patch of them that bloomed last spring(year 4). Looks like it might've been their last. Alliums tended to decline in bloom(year 3) so that's why I dug these ones up...to find them way deeper than originally planted. Probably the reason they gave only foliage & weak blooms if any. I will pot them & see what they do for me. Thanks for chiming in I appreciate it. KanuK...See MoreWhat to do about neglected climber?
Comments (13)Can you post a shot of the whole plant so that we can see its structure? It would be helpful to know if it's truly a climber or if it's a large HT (Zone 6, not sure how large is to be expected of QE). Contrary to popular belief, pruning isn't something we do because our neighbors cut all their roses to knee high. Pruning is for training, for removal of old, dead or damaged wood, for controlling shape and/or size, or, in some roses, for stimulating new growth. Climbers grow differently from shrub roses, so a good ID will be very helpful for those here to help you stimulate new growth and renew your plant. To state the obvious, you can do a lot for your rose by pruning the surrounding shrubs, so they don't impinge on your rose's sun. Bear in mind that those shrubs may provide winter protection for your rose, though. I'd go slowly with pruning the rose itself. Old plants can be extremely reluctant to produce new basal canes. This year, I'd give it TLC: clean out old wood, deadhead, mulch the base with compost, forming a 4 foot diameter circle around the rose, and fertilize in the springtime. Providing regular water in the summer and more sunshine can do a lot for a rose....See MoreWhat shall I do? Neglected azaleas
Comments (1)The leaves show the typical damage from lace bugs. The nymphs feed by sucking on the underside of the leaves leaving a stippled, mottled appearance. There is nothing that can be done about this at this point in the growing year, but contact your county extension service or state agriculture department for their advice on how to prevent infestation next year....See MoreNew bulbs appearing above ground. Comments (2)Cindy, Because of your location (zone) cannas can freeze without protection. Since yours have somehow survived in their present location you might simply remove the above ground foliage after a light killing frost and heavily mulch the rhizomes to prevent freezing: otherwise you can simply dig the rhizome clump and store in a cool moist area and prevent the rhizomes for drying out.
