What's replaced in a replacement window?
Comments (3)It depends on whether your windows are a stock size. If they are, and you choose just to replace the sashes, then that's all that changes. (But, even then you are likely to alter the muntin pattern, which does change the look of the window.) However, many people change out the entire windows, including framing and trim, and unless you have a restoration carpenter working on this, the vast majority of windows look permanently altered. And not, as you might gather from the chatter here, for the better! The reason for the more major work is often economic as the replacement units come pre-sized and the existing opening doesn't fit with the new one. Yes, of course, you could have custom-made exact reproductions made but they are very expensive. So when most people talk about replacement windows they are talking (railing against) about the few-sizes fit all, and none too well, commonly available ones. In many, if not most, cases substantial energy efficiency gains and repairs of problems can be done without changing out your windows. I've attached a link to a Preservation Brief on Energy Conservation in older buildings. There is an excellent one on window repair in the same free (you already paid for it with your taxes!) series from the National Park Service. Comments (2)The windows should have an ID sticker in the header portion or on the side of the sash. You can order the sashes, complete with IG and muntins. Those are usually 2/3 the cost of a window. Be sure to order them with Low E glass and agron gas for best energy efficiency. Call Simonton and ask for instructions on how to order them. Michael...See MoreReplacing Replacement Windows
Comments (3)I agree with Windows on Washington. Putting brand new windows in and leaving the old coil and caulk is a little like buying a brand new car and using the tires off the old car. If you don't feel comfortable doing the capping, you can contact a company that does siding and get a price from them. It usually runs somewhere between $50 and $100 per window depending on size and complexity but would be worth it IMO....See MoreReplacing construction windows with replacement windows
Comments (3)The proper way would be to measure the new windows to fit inside the existing frame. Sounds like you already ordered them to replace the whole frame though. Theres no way of getting around it you'll need to use the flange. If you have casings around the windows or vinyl siding it will be a pretty easy job....See Morecat_ky
