Height of Range Hood

Hi - We are getting a new range hood over our stove We have 14 inch high ceilings

Should we have the hood about 6-12 inches higher than the cabinet top or keep it even with the cabinets? Since our ceilings are so high we can’t go all the way up to the ceiling

We have hoods picked out to go either way

It’s probably my own preference but I still would like your professional opinion

The dimension you need to focus on is the distance from the cooktop to the bottom of the hood. That distance should be between 30"-36". The "cabinet top" would only matter with certain hood designs as to the height the hood is placed. You hang the hood so that the bottom of the hood is between 30-36" from the cooktop.

Can you provide more information or a photo of the hood location? I cannot tell if you will have a chimney above the hood, or have the hood hung under cabinets, or have a soffit, or what arrangement you are looking for.

Here are some photos showing various ways a hood is hung from the ceiling or from under cabinets. Many different widths and lenghts of chimney extensions - if that is what you are talking about. Again, more description - or perhaps provide the hood names and model numbers that you said you are looking at.

Height above the cooktop is what is critical. That will be a function of hood power as well as depth/width. A bigger, deeper, more powerful hood can be placed higer above the cooking surface and still work. Once you know where the bottom goes you trim out the top to look good.

I have Black Absolute tiles left over from the foyer and propped a couple of pieces up to get a better idea. W/o the off-white grout(which I would have)it looks so solid, but I like the depth of the black vs the travertine. I have SS appliances and Venetian Gold granite, which has black specks. Cabs are glazed ivory. There's a lot of ivory/black in the decorating of my home, with a mustardy gold being the only color. Flooring is a dark hand scraped wood. Rug in eating area and under the sink has a black background. The only 'bright spot' is the assortment of white ware on the dark stained hutch in the kitchen, and bits and pieces of it used in decorating, vases, platters, etc. Since it's just myself, i'm not cooking every day, so don't have the need to clean the stove/backsplash as often as others may have to. When I do cook, I clean as I go, and wouldn't consider myself messy. The thought did cross my mind when I was building, but I was living in San Diego while the house was being built in Austin. With so many decisions to make I just decided to go with what was easiest and had seen and liked. Now that i've been in the house almost 6 years it's about time I do the things I should have done, and didn't. ;)

Its my first time working w kitchen designers on a kitchen that we had so much options, so I never realized the inherent issues. If I were to do it all over again, I'd probably just extend the cabinets all the way up. One of the reasons we didn't was we have upper valence lighting on our current home and we love how much brighter it makes the kitchen. Anyway, I spoke to the kitchen makers and they seem to be willing to accomodate any change. I'm meeting with them onsite in a few days to go over the specifics. I'll let you guys know how it goes. Really appreciate all the feedback. I wouldve hoped that the cabinet makers would have told me the consequences before they made the cabinets...

As a former kitchen designer, I had to do some checking, as my memory failed me with regard to this issue. Guidelines indicate a hood should be 28" to 36" above the cooking surface. Average is 32". That being said, an island hood requires a significant amount of air movement due to the fact that the room air can move in all directions. When a hood is on a wall, that basically brings the back of the hood down to the cooktop area. That being said, drawing blood is not a very good sacrifice for efficiency, as sdeng mentioned. Hoods should also be 3 to 6" wider than the cook top. In an island, larger is better. The other consideration would be the type of cooking you do. If you do a bit of frying, a good vent will be critical. Hope that helps...

Remembered one other thing that might be helpful - if you decided to put the microwave in the base cabinet, you aren't limited to the shelf and drawer height ikea offers if you are using aftermarket drawer fronts. I was originally going to put the microwave under the counter so I figured all this out. The holes on the sides of the cabinet boxes that you attach the shelves, drawer slides and hinges to are drilled at 1.25" intervals, so you can have anything in multiples of 1.25". So you could do a 17.5" high space microwave opening (minus half the width of the shelf, so just over 17" really), and a 12.5" drawer underneath. Or an 18.75" space and an 11.25" drawer. If you do this you'd probably want to buy the cabinet base and mock it up (especially if you are using a trim kit) before putting in the door order to make sure it's all going to fit properly and figure out what painted trim pieces you would need.
