MCM kitchen island with short 'backsplash' - lose or keep?
Comments (11)Thanks, all. Yes, the island really is 17' long! And the beauty of it is the aisle is more than 42" wide, so there is plenty of room for 2 or 3 or 4 people to work. The ends of the island are pony walls about 4" thick and as high as the backsplash w/o planter boxes (which just lift off, BTW) -- sided with a distressed hardwood tongue-and-groove that is used elsewhere in the house on walls. We don't have to keep the pony walls, and if we went with a no-backsplash option, they would go, anyway. To be replced with ? ? ? The idea of splitting the island with a walkway is interesting. But the sink is centered in the island and would have to be moved, and we would have to deal with the flooring then. There are some spare pavers in a pile in the yard near the spare brick(!), but it would involve chiseling away at the slab to try to recess the new pavers to the proper level. I never thought about rebuilding the planter boxes of a different material. That is an interesting idea. I've thought about putting the WOW granite on the range backsplash only, with a simpler quartz on the counters (there is also a groovin' wet bar across the atrium from the island, so it needs to be updated at the same time with new cabinets/countertop). But I'll probably need to do some photoshop mock-ups of various granite patterns. I wouldn't want it all to get too busy. Pavers, bricks, slab wood, pebbles, distressed wood, trees, loud granite, stainless range hood -- yowza! We may have to be tranquilized. I'll try to take some better pictures tonight so it all makes more sense. But here is a shot that gives you a peek at the pony wall on the end of the island. The wood on it matches the wood on the living room wall at the far end of the shot and on the "front" wall on the right side of the shot. The brass doorknob in the lower right corner of the shot is the front door....See MoreKitchen reno - mainly backsplash question
Comments (8)Hi aloopylife, That is a nice kitchen and will be fabulous with your personal touch! I love that you are going to eliminate the upper cabinets over the peninsula and also just taking it out altogether would be a great option if you can do it so that the walkway into the kitchen is more open. I recently moved some cabinets in my laundry room and there was hardwood under them that at first I thought would be a terrible problem to match since it remained unfinished but it was easy to fix and I did it myself! Here is a compromise position that you might consider. I don't blame you for not wanting to rip out the whole kitchen so you might consider just replacing the upper cabinets in pre-finished white. That way you could have them go to the ceiling if that's your preference. Then you could just replace the doors on the lowers in the same pre-finished white and then just have the lower cabinet boxes painted. I am not sure how cost effective this would be but if you really don't want to pull all the cabinets out and are happy with the upgrades to the lowers it's an option. As to the backsplash I really like your second example and think it would look fabulous with your Carrera marble. If you think it might be too much of a good thing you could always put it in just a focal point area such as over the range or wherever you want it along with the white subway tiles. Fall back position to subway white tiles is always a good option as well and probably much more budget friendly. They also have subway Carrera tiles that are pretty and look great with your counter choice which is gorgeous. I have it in an upper guest bath and it's heartbreakingly beautiful. It feels so nice too. When we priced just doing doors for the cabinets it was sort of shocking how much it was!!! If you don't want to do all of them I have seen some kitchens that left some of them in place while changing the others. I don't think I have ever seen cathedral done on both the uppers and lowers as in your new home. Here they usually put them on the top only. If only they had done that! You could have kept the bottom cabinets as they are and only replaced the top doors or cabinets. Good luck! It's going to be really pretty even if you keep the cabinets as is and paint, it will be a huge update with the other changes and I love the idea of taking down the cabinets and peninsula in that area. That will be a nice update just doing that. New paint on the walls will also bring a new fresh feeling to the space as well....See MoreBacksplash? No backsplash? What kind of backsplash?
Comments (25)didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )...See MoreKitchen glass mosaic back-splash recommendations
Comments (9)I don't know what your client has in mind completely. It might be worth asking the client for some inspiration pictures for what she has in mind. I think some glass mosaics might be overpowering for that granite. But there are some glass mosaics that might work as long as they are very plain. Super white glass tile Maybe something like this with a tiny bit of pattern: Silver planks glass tile Or maybe this one which might work with the colour in the counter: glass mosaic - raw silk...See Morejsobert
