Flooring Kitchens Design Dilemma

need help with kitchen floor decision

We are remodeling kitchen and removing wall to make more of an open concept. We have carbonized strand bamboo flooring throughout the entire house and by removing the wall we have to figure out what kind of floor would work best. I would like to put an island where the wall was but would it look weird to have different floor that transitioned midway of the island? Also, what kind of floor would look best? My husband says a slate like tile. My dream was to have the same floor throughout but not sure if we could find matching flooring (original is morning star from LL flooring and has gone out of business) or if bamboo is even smart to put in the kitchen. The first pic is of the floor and the second is the wall that will be removed.
Please help.

If you can't match the existing flooring in the adjacent room then I agree with your husband that a slate look porcelain tile would be your best bet. I put that in my primary bath a couple years ago when I remodeled and I love it. It does not show every speck of dirt and IMO it goes with everything. I do have reservations about your putting in an island and having the flooring change in the middle of it. If you want input on your floorplan, post a drawing of the kitchen and the next room. But if you're referring to the wall between the kitchen and living room, removing it is going to meet with limited enthusiasm. I have seen this done in flips and I can't say I care for it. I don't want to be able to see the kitchen from the front door, or from the living room, but if the house is small overall and you have young children it can be practical. Maybe there is a way to achieve more openness without completely removing a wall. I don't know without being able to see the floorplan.

This is not the question you are asking, but are you saying that the addition has a Diameter of 8 feet? Or a standard ceiling height of 8 feet with 5-ft tall windows? An 8 foot diameter floorspace in in kitchen is not large enough for a dining area unless it has built in seating around it with a table in the center--and this isn't too convenient for seating because people have to get up to let others leave the table.

Whatever you do, don't do tile! I am a fairly active older person in pretty good shape (yoga, walking, etc) and if I spend more than an hour in the kitchen standing on tile my body starts to hurt! This started happening last year and I realize it's because of the tile (on slab) I am standing on. If I could do it over again, I would either do engineered wood like the rest of the house or Marmoleum, which I have a "thing" for. The hardwood I have in the other room has grooves but they do serve a purpose which is if you get grains of sand for example they go into the groove and prevent abrasion of the planks themselves. It's like a little "collection area" for dirt. The dirt vacuums out quite easily. The engineered hardwood I have is Mirage and it has held up well over the past 7 years. There are nicks and scratches from use, but that is the beauty of hardwood. If you buy good quality hardwood floors, they have a couple of sandings in them and I believe they can have many many screenings.

I think doing a mix of different white tiles, or a mix of gloss and matte tiles might be easier to harmonize with the other two whites than having an expanse of a single white in the backsplash. These ideas are from Heath Ceramics. A mix of Heath's canvas white and vanilla bean. I don't know if I like this pattern for you, but I like the color mix. This is a dual-glazed tile; part of the tile is glossy and part is matte (I don't know if anyone but Heath does this, but you could mix gloss and matte tiles from someone else for a similar effect)

Cairo is a nice neutral color, I love it. Choose the floors you love the most, they are going to be the most long term, most everything else in the home will/can change. Once the floors are in you can think about paint, etc.
