I have a brick wall that I grow vines on. I did something similar to what Arum mentioned. I bought a few sections of lattice and painted them to match the brick so they wouldn't stand out while there was no growth on them. I think they were about 8' long and 2 or 3' wide. I stood them on the narrow end and buried about a foot underground to give it support and leaned it against the wall. They are covered with annual vines every year and look really pretty. The one thing I would have done differently is that I should have bought synthetic (plastic) lattice instead of wood because the underground part is starting to rot. It's no big deal to replace it, I'm just lazy. lol I've also seen trellises that have stakes built onto them that you can just stick in the soil. They just weren't big enough for what I wanted and the lattice was very inexpensive and easy to put up. Karyn

Installing one inch foam to a wall may save you some energy dollars, but it will also make your windows deeply recessed. Consider that appearance before you add depth to the walls. A recessed window is usually an invitation to leaks. When installing more than the weather barrier, it's a good idea to consider a build-out around windows and doors. Wall filled insulation is more value for your money. A weather barrier over plywood or OSB is very sufficient. Roofers felt AND a Tyvek is overkill. I would be more concerned that flashings are used where needed, not a layer of felt. If you are basing your selection criteria simply on vinyl versus aluminum, I would look for an extruded aluminum (both frame and sash) with an AAMA 2605 finish. However, there are many other features that will come into play besides this question but it is an important one. I would look at the brands that are mentioned prominently like Andersen, Marvin and Jeld Wen among others and choose one that fits your criteria (quality, rating, budget etc.. Good luck!

Much of the reason vinyl siding was invented and is used was/is to eliminate the need for painting. Of course, since some folks insist on making changes, there have been products developed to use on vinyl siding. Generally, using a darker color is problematic, since that choice can cause the siding to warp from extra absorbed heat. Several paint manufacturers have developed paint for use on vinyl siding. Best option would be to find a painter experienced in painting vinyl and use products from an established paint manufacturer. And hope.
