How do you attach a trellis to vinyl siding?

We have a large wall of our house behind my garden. A trellis (or 3) will look great there and allow me to grow vertically there. I really don't want to drill into my vinyl siding. What options are there? I thought about using an item I saw to design one with wire that sticks to hooks on the side, but it wouldn't be pretty when the vines weren't growing.

Help!

How about mounting a large trellis in FRONT of the wall, by puttting the post deep in the ground to support it? Just a thought. :) Arum

I have a brick wall that I grow vines on. I did something similar to what Arum mentioned. I bought a few sections of lattice and painted them to match the brick so they wouldn't stand out while there was no growth on them. I think they were about 8' long and 2 or 3' wide. I stood them on the narrow end and buried about a foot underground to give it support and leaned it against the wall. They are covered with annual vines every year and look really pretty. The one thing I would have done differently is that I should have bought synthetic (plastic) lattice instead of wood because the underground part is starting to rot. It's no big deal to replace it, I'm just lazy. lol I've also seen trellises that have stakes built onto them that you can just stick in the soil. They just weren't big enough for what I wanted and the lattice was very inexpensive and easy to put up.

I wonder what you mean about training them to go up the side of trees. Do you mean live trees or do you mean saplings cut down and used to make tripods? I would not advise training beans on lrees. They will not grow well in shade or among roots of a tree. I make a free-standing trellis about seven feet tall, which is about as high as I can reach for harvesting. How Far In Front of Trellis Do You Plant a Climbing Rose?

That should depend upon how much room you have and how frequently you expect to have to get behind the rose to maintain or replace the trellis. Ideally, as close to it as possible to support the rose and prevent having to lean it back terribly far to get it attached. If the trellis is permanent and not requiring painting, repairing, etc. and there isn't a huge concrete footing to it which may leach into the roots causing alkalinity issues, plant it as close as you can so there will be more room in front of the rose to encourage any growth in front to cover its bare knees. Either way, you can't really do it wrong, unless you have to train the rose back a foot or more to attach it. Kim

One thing that needs to be pointed out is that you have to purchase a drill bit that is suited to masonry. Ordinary drill bits will not drill into brick or mortar--you will just dull them down. In addition to plastic, there are lead or lead like anchors that are sold that can be pounded into the drilled holes. As you screw the screw into the anchors, they spread apart much like regular drywall anchors, thereby securing the anchor into the brick or mortar. You can also use screws with eyes and run wire through the eyes to create a trellis that will be limited in design only by your imagination and the number of screws you want to drill into the wall.

We used CertainTeed Impressions on our entire house. We get compliments on it all the time. In fact, people will go up and touch it, and then are amazed that it's not real shakes. Originally I was adamant that I did not want to use vinyl siding, but this product was so much better than anything else I looked at. I think what sets it apart from other vinyl shakes is that it appears seamless and the color is not a flat solid color. It has a bit of variation in the color like real cedar shakes, and it has some depth to the color and texture. I looked at Foundry vinyl shakes, and there was no comparison. The house is 5200 sq ft. As a comparison, the cost was $5,000 more than SmartSide. I didn't like the SmartSide because at the time they only had pastels, I thought it was way too shiny, and I didn't like all the seams. I think they've come out with many more attractive colors now. I've attached a picture of the back side of the garage. Not the best picture, but it is the best I have that shows the siding up close. I also agree with another poster that a more substantial trim around the windows makes a big difference.
