All terrain vehicles can be very dangerous

Hello everyone - I live in the country. Twenty five years ago I moved to the family farm after my dear grandmother died and have really enjoyed being here. For the most part. In the time that I have lived here my experience with off road vehicles has not been all that great. Here ATVs are known as "automatic trespass vehicles" - snowmobiles fall into the same category because somehow the laws that apply to all other vehicles don't seem to apply to these.

I have had very drunken and lost ATV drivers show up in the middle of my fields the week they were planted with corn, people on off road vehicles in my woodlands tearing up the hillsides and messing up the creek beds. I find their tracks everywhere on my property when the soil is wet. Calling the police doesn't do any good, the offenders will tear up my place and then speed off to someone else's property.

Yesterday as I was driving home from visiting a friend at the hospital I was on my street and some kid on an ATV came blasting out of his driveway making a left hand turn right in front of my car. He was wearing a helmet, but he did not look at all and was totally unaware and oblivious to the fact that I was coming down the street. I had to slam on my breaks and by then he had pulled out in front of me and we were staring at each other almost head - on. I laid on my car horn for about a full minute and did the horizontal hand arm slash gesture meaning DON'T EVER DO THAT AGAIN!!! I almost ran him over and if I didn't see him coming it could have ended very badly - for both of us. He pulled around my car and I doubt that he really learned anything from the experience. I was badly shaken by it.

What are your views on all terrain vehicles? I have known enough people myself that have either gotten hurt very badly on them or have died while driving them. It just doesn't seem worth the thrill they might provide when you end up in a wheelchair for the rest of your life because of a bad decision. You don't need a seat belt or a license to operate one - there isn't even an age requirement. Thanks for listening, just needed to rant and I feel better now. Please drive safely!
