The shrubs are ok. I would probably do something like hydrangeas or roses on the other side of the sidewalk.

Yes, here is a picture! We are near Indianapolis, IN. We do have a large tree that provides a lot of shade once it’s leaves come in.

Remember that you want to end up with a landscape that looks at least decent year-round. A very common mistake is to pull out all the 'boring' evergreens, and replace them with flowering plants that, at best, disappear during the winter. So I would strongly recommend keeping the boxwoods unless there is some issue with them. Then I'd replace them with some other evergreen.

The walkway is narrow enough that planting on both sides may make it feel very hemmed in. On the lawn side, I'd be thinking in terms of something fairly low, and plant it a good distance away from the walk, so it didn't spread onto the walk. So I'd be thinking in terms of a couple of types of perennials. Perennial geraniums would be a good start, though some types may have trouble with the exposure. Winter sun is very likely to cause evergreens to winterburn, unless they are very tough.

Thank you for the added photo, that helps a lot. Anything planted under the window to the left of the door must be tolerant of dry shade. Since the hose bib is there, I would use a mix of perennials like hellebores, lady ferns and hostas with spring bulbs added for early color. Flowers in the window box will provide summer color.

I would also keep the boxwoods in front of the porch. I'd add a couple large pots of summer annuals for color and call it done. Planting flowers or shrubs on the lawn side of the sidewalk would make the sidewalk feel narrow. I prefer to keep lawn on that side.

You can pull out all the boxwoods and replace them with Baby Gem boxwoods.

Keep them meticulously trimmed very compact.

At the right end, in the sun you can try a hardy hydrangea like Cranberry Crush or Valentine Crush.

That is not a picture of a hydrangea. Looks like a hibiscus.

Box is very amenable to hard pruning. Simply cutting back the current bushes, if they're healthy, would achieve the same end as removing and replacing. They'll need regular clipping, but meticulous trimming is proposed for the replacements anyway. If they're not healthy there's little point in replanting with more box.

And yes, that's a Hibiscus, not a Hydrangea.

That red-flowered shrub is a hibiscus, not a hydrangea. Neither hibiscus nor hydrangea are evergreen, they will look bad between fall and spring. If you want more color, I'd look at broadleaved evergreens, Mt. Laurel, Azaleas and Rhodos. Pay attention to final size.

One way to see what looks good is to observe nice gardens in your neighborhood. That can often be more effective than looking at pictures, because pictures will usually show things in bloom, but it's a rare shrub that blooms for more than a month, so 10-11 months of the year, it won't be in bloom.
