Simple teaching/demonstration for Scouts
Comments (2)As far as a simple project, lettuce is an easy crop. You can surface sow your seeds on moist Perlite & transplant them later to a system. Given the age of the group you are working with, they would probably like building their own system. A simple raft system can be easily made by purchasing products at your local dollar & hardware store. Below are some links to some systems made by forum members: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/hydro/msg121151236631.html http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/hydro/msg0510515721118.html...See MoreCollections that never see the light of day...
Comments (11)How timely that I found this discussion this morning. I have had a collection of tins that I've been adding to for years now. The larger holiday tins I started using for storing holiday decorations in. But the smaller ones I found that I just didn't have anywhere to display them that they wouldn't just be clutter and not serving any real purpose. Well a couple weeks ago DH and I picked up a HUGE entertainment center that came in sections. We really only wanted it for one section so have been repurposing the remaining sections. Anyway to make a long store shorter, part of it we're turning into a sewing area and we're using to 2 of the sections to frame it. When I started going through all of my sewing stuff and sorting and organizing it, I started looking at how I was going to put it in the cabinets. I thought of going out and buying some cute baskets and containers and then the proverbial light bulb went off over my head. I sent DH up to the attic to bring down the BIG box of my tins. I cleaned them all and started putting everything in those tins. We have a 6 month old grandson who is beginning to get mobile so I'm also baby proofing the house for his visits. Well I know that he can't get into these tins because it takes me quite a bit of effort to get into some of them. The bonus is, this area now looks wonderful! I just love Garden Web and often spend hours here just looking through posts getting ideas for decorating, storing, cleaning, you name it! Thanks, Cindy...See MoreBAD Condo Rule -- No kids in pool during adult hour
Comments (112)Just one data point here. Most of the rules Livvysmom listed are at my neighborhood pool as well. 2. No Food, Glass, or Pets in pool area We have the same. People break the No Food part but the No Glass and No Pets are pretty strictly enforced for obvious reasons. 3. Persons having open cuts, sores, rashes or communicable disease are not permitted in pool. I don't think we have quite this rule because the kids always get cuts and the life guards put bandaids on them and send them back into the pool. 4. Children must be toilet trained, and if under 12 must be supervised by a responsible adult. Usually this has to be with health regulations for toilet training and insurance for the under 12. Our pool just changed the age to 12 (from 10) due to insurance. Swim diapers don't contain fecal matter so I'd rather children wearing swim diapers be banned than allowed. This is the first year my four year old son is allowed in the "big" pool because he did not toilet train until after he was three. 5. Adult (age 18 or over) hour is 3 pm-4 pm. 9. Only Coast Guard Approved personal flotation devices allowed, No swim fins, tanks, coins, floats or toys in pool area. The pool allows coins and toys (e.g., pool balls to toss around) but no fins, tanks (!), or flotation devices (waterwings and such). If a child needs a flotation device then the parent has to be with that child at all times. This is actually a safety issue so that parents don't get "lazy" about supervising a child who can't swim. People used to gripe about the flotation device rule until a 6yo child at another nearby pool drowned. He was wearing a flotation device of some sort, went to the restroom, took off the device and did not put it back on. Jumped into the pool. Drowned. The parent or adult in charge was not with the child at any point during this time. It's easy to blame the parent but I think putting a child in a flotation device gives a false sense of security for lots of people. 10. No horseplay, running, jumping or screaming. The extent of horseplay and screaming and jumping is usually up to the discretion of the life guards. Some are strict and some let the children (teens) play if they are the only ones in the pool area. 13. No Diving Obvious safety issues and insurance. We have a diving well. One member brought up the point that if the diving boards (low and high) were removed, the pool insurance would be alot less. The dive team parents objected to this notion....See MoreIn Laws, Exwife and Adult Stepdaughter
Comments (82)Sorry, I was having a bad day when I posted that. In this case the ex does get a significant amount of child support from him even though she makes more money than he does and the daughter lives with us 2-4 days a week. She also gets financial support from her family and his family (they love her and only recently stopped shunning me). She has a boyfriend that lives with her part-time and she basically supports him (with the help our our money if you think about it...) She has the daughter enrolled in all kinds of activities like dance classes, swimming classes, cooking classes, etc. The daughter has lots of nice toys and clothes and goes to one of the best pre-schools around. She does not go without anything and is well loved and doted upon at both households. She is spoiled by both sets of grandparents, all the aunts and uncles, and even my own mother sometimes. When my significant other lost his overtime at work his child support stayed the same. Then when he got laid off his child support stayed the same. When she got a new job and started making more money his child support stayed the same. When we got our heat turned off for non-payment his child support stayed the same. We have 2.5 people living in our house but I pay 50% of everything while he pays someone else who makes more than him. That just doesn't sit well with me. We can't afford to pay our bills anymore and forget about ever taking a vacation or saving money. When he was with his ex they had a savings account, took nice vacations and were looking into buying a house. We're broke. There are other issues I won't bother going into here because it's too long and I guess I have some big decisions to make. He says he'll never get married or have more kids and I want those things. It feels so unfair to me that he did those things with someone else but won't do them with me. It's like someone else got it all and I'm getting nothing. But I have to accept a stepchild and an ex wife that will always be in our lives and I have no choice but to make sacrifices for them. I love him and his daughter and I get along fine with his ex but I am clearly the least important person to him....See Moreorchidrain
