Is anyone else checking the eagle's nest cam in California?

DH loaded the feed on our giant TV and we turn it on while we are drinking coffee It's so picturesque and relaxing. The view from the nest is lovely.

(I don't suggest reading the comment feed. Some people are a little too invested in this.)

It pops up in my Facebook feed every so often. I saw the flying squirrel take a leap off the eagle’s back!

Yes, I've followed it for several years. Hoping for good news this spring.

It's pretty amazing how the water levels in the lake have come back.

I would love to visit in person but our friends in that region moved from Palm Desert back to the east coast.

Yep, three eggs now. The site said the third egg was first observed on the 30th so it would seem they don't lay their eggs all at once. I was wondering how long before we see chicks too, so I looked it up & it takes 5-6 weeks of incubation before the eggs hatch. If the first egg arrived around the 23rd of April (according to the Wood's Hole site), we should start looking around May 27th. The eggs will hatch in the order in which they were laid. Dad's helping out too. I think I saw him bring a peice of food back, but it was unidentifiable. I've also seen them switch off for sitting on the eggs. They had a peice of paper that they were using as a blanket for awhile. They would place it over the eggs while stretching their legs and then tuck it around their breast while sitting. Well, we probably shouldn't get started on the whole hunting vs non-hunting thing because it is too complex and volatile a subject. HAVING SAID THAT,if someone asked me what my stance was it would be simply this: I MIGHT be pro-hunting if everyone who hunted my property first filled out,in detail, a questionnaire completely profiling both their hunting ability and what level of awareness/respect they had for the animal and the life they were about to take. Only through this process of selection and elimination would I allow people to hunt my land, but since that is basically just a pipe dream, and since I know too well the reality of what kind of people hunt near me, I generally utter the word "hunter" with a curled upper lip. The sadness of this situation is that, once again, it's due to human intervention that the predators are no longer here, the deer are everywhere in unnaturally inflated numbers, and the ecosystem is starting to show the strain. And by the way, Scandia...I had a similar experience with a hunter myself in my own woods. A hunter, a man I know, levelled his shotgun at my chest about seven years ago. I was less than 35 yards away and wearing a fuschia colored sweatshirt because I didn't own any blaze orange. When he realized what he had nearly done he said he almost peed himself. I had always been indignant about the blaze orange rule...it was my property and there wasn't anyone allowed back there so by golly I was going to wear whatever I pleased. I learned a valuable lesson from that...I might have been right, but I would still have been dead. Now when I patrol my property I assume I am about to confront Larry, Darryl and Darryl and they all have coke-bottle glasses and can't see past ten yards AND I WEAR BLAZE ORANGE.

We raised our family in a 3,000 square foot home, which took a lot of cleaning time if you ask me! The next one we built was about 2200 square feet and lived in that for several years. I liked the house, but hated living in a subdivision. The one we just finished building, and plan on staying in until they carry us out of here is about 1700 square feet. We designed, engineered, and built this house ourselves. It is plenty big for us. We will be able to age in place here. There is plenty of space in each room for easy wheelchair access. Since we don't give a hoot about what anyone else thinks, or for "resale" value, we designed with fewer, but larger rooms. We have one large master bedroom, a really nice bathroom, a half bath, large kitchen with the laundry room and large walk in pantry right off of it, and the great room that is open to the whole kitchen, but sectioned with a sewing area and a living room area. When family comes to visit we have a couch that pulls out into bed and high quality air mattresses. We can close a pocket door on our hall that closes off our whole master area for complete privacy. Lots of windows that bring nature right inside. We also have a full wrap around porch that we use constantly. No one has minded "camping" out here and we have such a good time because everything is informal. We built a log home, and it is a simple rectangular home that is a replica of the simple old time Florida homes. No bumpouts. No convoluted rooflines. Every person that has come to visit says this is an awesome house and hates to leave. You can have a smaller, simple, but well built, and tastefully decorated home that no huge home can ever match in atmosphere.We decided a ruby red bluestar range, wood walls and ceilings (never have to paint again) and the fantastic porch were way more pleasurable than having square footage meant only to impress someone else and would never use. We have a glass of wine or cold beer in a frosted mug every evening on our porch while watching trhe sun set.

Sharon, I don't think they've hatched yet. Right next to the cam is a box that has the dates they laid them and updates. I think they'll post when they hatch. They did on this other eagle cam I'm watching. Two out of three eggs have hatched on that one and there is alot of activity today. The male keeps coming to switch and the female isn't giving it up. LOL.. maybe last one is about to hatch. This is a California nest. The Ca site says the eggs take about 35 days to hatch so the Virginia one might be a bit more before they hatch. Certainly worth checking them out. I really look forward to the Va one because of how close the cam is compared to the Ca one. Here is a link that might be useful: TurtleBay eagle watch

gsciencechick - Big Bear Lake is a cute town. The side of the mountain that we went up has surprisingly sketchy roads. I would not want to attempt it in rain or snow. And we're used to driving on switchbacks in CO.

I have watched eagles nests on Explore.org's live cams off and on but not this particular cam. They are interesting, and of course anything baby related can grab one's attention. Just remember this is wildlife, nature - which is not always kind so I caution getting too invested in the outcomes over which we have no control.

My plumber was here one day replacing a hot water tank in a hallway closet outside my home office when I'd left my computer on, sound not muted. The female eagle california coast was shrieking for her mate, she wanted a break. The look on his face when he didn't realize what all the noise was about was priceless.

It's been incredible that 20,000+ have been watching the live streams. There are 32,000 watching right now! I happened to be online one evening when she laid the first egg. It was so amazing to watch live as it happened.

We have eagles locally near a golf course but I don't think they have a livestream. Two eaglets have been confirmed in about the past week. There is someone who wants to develop the land near them and there has been a huge pushback about this.

Yes.. I've been following. Last year too. It was heartbreaking last year when neither of the two eggs hatched.

It was amazing to watch the nest during the recent snowstorms up there. Jackie was completely covered with snow and would raise her wings occasionally to shake it off. She's a very good mama.

Eagles are fun to watch. I watch the nest cams set up in east Georgia by the folks at Berry College. The past 2 years have been sad. Last year only one egg was viable and the eaglet didn’t make it but a few days. This year, neither egg hatched. The eagles acted as if they might be preparing to nest again but they did not. I don’t participate in the associated chat because it is totally off the rails most of the time and not related to the eagles except when something happens.

We also have stopped in my hometown about 30 miles from here to watch the eagles nests. Photographers are almost always present hoping for that perfect shot, and they do have some wonderful photos on FB.

I watch the photos taken of our resident eagles here -- just about 4 miles down the road. W sometimes see them overhears. We get 2 eaglets most years, including this one. They just recently fledged so the nest will be empty until next winter .

Yes, DH and I follow the eagles. We have been watching the nest for 3 years. We feel a connection to the eagles as Big Bear, is in our local mountains; we enjoy visiting the area.
