This was a great thread to read after having moved back in the summer - some very good advice. I was very conflicted about moving but I think it was clear to me that moving the garden wasn't going to happen. As it was I did take well over 100 perennials I potted up as they emerged in the spring (they were mostly splits of plants that really needed it). To be honest this was really too much...I spent a whole week moving car loads of plants before and after work and was already completely exhausted from moving the house. The new tenant at the place asked the landlord if she could contact me about the garden but in the end I said no. Of course a big part of me wanted to still be involved with that garden but I knew I needed to make a clean break and focus on my new garden. This fall I planted about 1300 bulbs and cant wait to see them if this winter ever ends.

3 of the 10 I ordered are no shows so far: Scotti, Lord Herschell & Harlow Carr. 2 weeks ago Tie Dye just poked it's head out, 2 stems & now only 4" tall. Hanajima just popped up last week. I do have past experience with clematis popping up out of no where...thinking they were dead. I had a sieboldii not show up til mid June last year, so I am still trying to be hopeful. I'd be most disappointed about HC. I am curious as if they are still selling clematis? When I google a particular cultivar they pop up sometimes with a shopping cart to buy?! I haven't tried buying anything so can't say for certain. Anyone know? I do have 2 other no shows so far that are not coming from CH. Weird I will have to say because at both nurseries I purchased at least 4 & all of the others have turned up. The weirdest being 2 Wallenburgs, 1 is growing great & the other I keep checking in the mulch...nada. LeAnne, Joy Creek carries Betina. I have been searching the web trying to identify a wild clematis in my yard and came across this thread. A thread that has been going for eight years. Tonight I have learned that there are several similar species and some are known by several names. Clematis terniflora has at least two synonyms:Clematis maximowicziana and Clematis paniculata. And at least three common names: Sweet Autumn Clematis, Sweet Autumn Virgin's Bower, Japanese Clematis. It is a native of Japan and in some areas is an invasive weed. In other areas it is loved like most on this thread love it. There several similar species called Sweet Autumn and virgin's bower. But, vary in number of leaflets water and light requirements. Some have no odor, some have complete flowers and some male and female flowers are on different plants. In western US the native Clematis ligusticifolia is very similar. Same rambunctious growth habit and similar scent. There are at least three cultivors of this species. One of them is naturalized here in Missouri. I am now searching to determine which I have.

I'm a complete clematis murderer but since you didn't get an answer, I did some research and found out that it likely will not be true to form. I imagine if you only grow one type of clematis it might come true. I got the following article from the International Clematis Society, link to full site below. "Germinating Clematis from Seeds Clematis seeds may take up to three years to germinate, but you should get some germination in about six months to a year. Collect ripe seed in the fall and plant in sterile seed starting mix, covering seeds with a thin layer of sand. Place the container into a zip lock polyethylene bag and place it outside in a shady spot (or a refrigerator) for several months during the winter so that they go through several freeze/thaw cycles. Then place the covered container in a warm location out of direct sunlight and wait for your first seedling. As the seeds germinate, the small plants should be pricked out of the germinating container and planted into a small pot using a sterile soiless mix. Be very careful as the root will be a single long root in the beginning. As it grows larger it will need a larger pot, fertilizer and constant moisture. When the plant has three sets of leaves, pinch out the growing tip to promote branching. Seeds collected from hybrid clematis will usually not breed true to the parent so you might create a new and exciting cultivar that may be named after yourself or a loved one. The chances of getting a new winner are about one in 200, but acceptable smaller flowers of little commercial value will result. They make great gifts to fellow gardeners if you get too many. Your seedling will take at least a year to offer its first bloom and another three years to become a mature plant. I usually wait until it blooms before planting it out in the garden.
