Advice needed with open corner in kitchen

I have a blank, open corner in my kitchen that is begging to have something added.. I’ve thought of a pantry cabinet, a coffee station or wine fridge, a built in bench, a small desk, etc but am not sure what would look best.. I’ll be adding open shelving to other open space next to the stove hood. There is a window right next to the corner with a radiator underneath. From the start of the wall to the window, the corner dimensions are 33.5” on the “long” wall by 24” on the “window” wall. I do need to keep some clearance to walk past the island to the left. Appreciate any and all ideas!!

Great kitchen! I would add a pretty little (live) tree in a nice large basket - great texture & it would be so happy in front of those windows

(also do you mind sharing the name of your floor tile?)

Thank you! The tile was in the home when we purchased it but my husband will know, I’ll ask him and update you, it’s a slate tile and we do love it!

Liriodendron: I will think it over. Most of the time we throw everything in the DW so it's only problematic on the holidays. I will try to do some sort of mockup tonight with the laundry sink where we're washing dishes to get a better idea of what it will be like. David: Thanks; that might make a very good home for the KA mixer. Diana: DWs which have electronics that come on when opened are a problem. If you can disable that they're usually okay but really strict people will check with Star-K or another authority before purchasing. F&P used to be certified but now I see it's not the Star-K list anymore. :-( The Rubbermaid tubs in the shower is a brilliant idea! WRT the corner pantry area, I am now waffling between two solutions: 1. Build a pantry unit with 24" base cabs and 12" cabinets above that appear to sit on the counter. When opened, there would be space at the bottom for appliances and coffeepot but space for dry goods and glasses above. The fridge will stick out like a sore thumb next to it but I can live with it till it breaks and then replace it with a counter-depth model. There was a picture in a saved thread of wonbyherwits' pantry: http://starpoohonline.com/pantries.pdf If I did this I think I can get maximum lenth of the run because it can wrap around the corner to the wall oven run. 2. Build a step-in pantry similar to natal's in this thread: http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/kitchbath/msg0802070524922.html I could build it 30" deep but would have to make it shorter to allow the wall oven run to be the maximum length because otherwise it will be too short to be useful. And I will have a backup pantry at the base of the stairs for less-used items. Other less feasible idea would be to run the step-in pantry as far as it can go, leave the DR door in its original place (near the chimney on the bottom right wall, where the wall oven run is going) and have an 11' run to work in wall ovens, baking space and servery. Turned it over and over in my head but couldn't really come up with a configuation I liked. I'm really torn between a cabinetry pantry that would give me counter space and a perfect coffee spot, but look a little silly next to the 30" deep fridge and a step-in pantry which would give me more food storage (and save money on cabinetry!) but feel a little tight. I think I'm leaning toward the former--what do y'all think? It would look less silly at 24" as a freestanding piece which could work since I'm going for an English look anyway. May be I should describe my use of the kitchen. I cook for breakfast and dinner, for a family of 3. Breakfast is simple, may be some eggs or just toast. Dinner is 95% stir fry, with some stew or soup or roast at times. I am the only person cooking 99% of the time. @palimpsest Thanks I absolutely agree with your thought. But may be because I am new to this(first timer), I am still not getting why a range on the current fridge side is better? I would really appreciate if someone can explain. @cluelessincolorado Thanks for the suggestion. That is definitely something I can consider. It is just more involved as wall demolition and build is involved. I would definitely consider this if I cannot find a way to not move the wall at this point. @caligirl5 Yes I do agree that table is not doing us much good here. If I do not remove the table in the intermediate stage, i plan on using it as a counter top when I'm cooking so the narrow gap is not really my concern. and yes, there is more room between the current fridge and dishwasher. The reason it looks narrow on the plan is because i took measurement in the interior of the whole floor but it seems the visio dimensions are exterior. And because i make other rooms before kitchen, i shrink some walk space width to accommodate other items. SO between the fridge and dishwasher there is at least another 8 inches in space.

Nice place. You've got a great blank slate...stick with it and it will come. I agree about the kitchen backsplash, but I don't think I'd start there. There are a number of things I would think about, but first it's important for you to make the space work for you and your lifestyle. Do you need more storage? Do you entertain a lot and need more dining space? Do you cook a lot and need more surface area to work? Do you need more seating in the living area for parties and such? Or is the seating you have now adequate. So, for example, I would think about adding an island to the kitchen which people could sit at with their backs to the long wall. It would add storage below and work surface above and not block off the light from the living area. If possible, think about adding pendant lighting over the island. I would move the dining area so it is closer to the long wall. I would help define that area by using an area rug underneath. In the living room, you could use another area rug to highlight the space. The drapes look skimpy, especially with the knot in them, and the color isn't helping to bring in the strong colors from the tile floor. I would think about getting a bookcase style entertainment unit to add more storage and mass, and I would put that on the long wall...put the seating area more into the corner to make it feel cozier. If you're open to new furniture, a sectional sofa might be nice there. A lot of it will come with more wall decor as well. Right now there's only a few pieces and they are small in scale relative to the size of the walls. But you've got a good start.

That corner isn't very large, IMO it doesn't need to be filled with anything. La_la_girl's idea of a plant is good. Unless you really need any of the things you listed as options and don't have anywhere else to put them. Then I think I would keep it to something low (not full height) and put art over it. It's not going to look right if it's over-stuffed. Are you planning on having some sort of window treatment on those two windows? I like your floor too. :-)

Beautiful kitchen! I wouldn't put a cabinet there. I'd probably either do the suggestion of a tree or a plant stand with a beautiful fern or some other houseplant.

I think adding great window treatments to that window (and the window over the sink) would do wonders to make that area look less bare and warm the kitchen up overall. Either a roman shade in a custom fabric, or a wood blind of some kind.

Keep that space open. Less is almost always more

I like the windows open nothing on them. But... if you want to do something for texture maybe light airy sheers or drapes or shade that can close nothing heavy just keep it fresh.

I’d hang a set of framed prints, one above the other. I like the ideas below, classic/simple and shades pick up nicely with your floor.

Beautiful kitchen. Negative space is a wonderful thing. Don't clutter up a nice look. Either leave as is or hang artwork in a wood frame to match your counters. I'm doing in this in my kitchen, though mostly in my head because it has been 2 years and I still haven't found the right artwork!

Not every space, be it wall or floor, needs to be occupied…lest the kitchen look too cluttered. Eyes need a resting place.

Besides, that area is a pass through to the main part of the kitchen. I certainly wouldn’t put anything, plant of furniture, in that space.

I'm not sure I would add anything that takes up a footprint just because... because. You do need that area for walking around and all. Keeping that footprint clear can allow you a spot to land things on occasion if needed- extra boxes, bags from shopping, someone dropping off a something, ect.

Personally I would be more likely to use those walls for hanging storage of things like pans, strainers, lids, ect. Or use one of the walls as a murphy if I felt I needed the extra horozontal space sometimes- have art on the bottom of it for when it's tucked up.
