La-z-boy recliner sofa quality?
Comments (66)We bought People Loungers in 2001 and decided in December of 2020 it was finally time to replace them. They were still holding up pretty well considering their age but became worn in spots on the foot rest my husband uses and the spot he sat in eventually broke so bad he didn’t see the point of fixing it. I looked into getting PL again but they weren’t being sold anymore so after many hours of looking at furniture stores and online I decided on La-Z-Boy. I’d read about it’s declined quality but hoped for the best because it was hard to find reclining sofa/loveseat that was manual, not a sectional and in a fabric/style I liked. I spent many hours carefully deciding and I made a choice that I was excited and confident about. They arrived in late January 2021 looking just as gorgeous as I had hoped! Then I started moving them into position in my living room and immediately noticed how much my hand sunk in while leaning/pushing on the headrest - very large foam that was not dense at all. The seats were the same. You just sink in. There’s no inkling of firmness. As my husband used his spot, I noticed pilling on the fabric and could see how loose it was looking. This was after 3 months. I spent so much time choosing everything and loved my choices so much - I knew dealing with it getting “repaired” or whatever they would’ve possibly done (if they even would) would be a nightmare and we also didn’t want to be without furniture - we decided to just keep it for as long as we could and figured we would have to replace it a lot earlier than we thought. A year later, the most used spots are very saggy and extremely pilled. At the time of delivery, we immediately got rid of the old, broken PL loveseat and planned on trashing the old PL couch the following week. But after a week decided to keep the old couch because of the extra seating it provided and the low quality of the new furniture (I figured if we could still use it some, it would save the new furniture some). I considered buying another LB sofa to match but could not spend that kind of money on such terrible quality. So almost exactly a year later, my old PL couch is the one I always sit on so that it “saves” the new furniture (and it’s quality remains the same - besides the one spot that’s a little broken inside and is “rigged” to function , the rest of it looks pretty good - the cushions are firm, not sagging, the fabric is not stretched or pilled). With the new furniture - my husbands spot looks terrible. The other spots are slightly saggy, slightly pilled and slightly stretched but they don’t get used more than an hour a day. Spent $2,700 on a manual reclining sofa and loveseat that will need to be replaced in a couple of years. So sad because it’s such a waste of money and it will just end up in a landfill. And like another person asked…”If not La-Z-Boy, then what???” I would love to know whose quality matches that of People Lounger in 2001 and La-Z-Boy years and years ago. Comments (30)Fabricland had tons of stuff but nothing that would work. The fabrics were very upholstery like and not suited for a child's room. They did have some specifically geared towards kids but those were only 84". @mlweaving_Marji, what you said makes perfect sense. Although I will have to come up with a new plan as I won't be able to sew anything together. Even if I attempted it, I don't the time. We go from 6:30am until 10:30pm every week day, and have one day's worth of free time on the weekend which is used for grocery shopping, cleaning, etc. I could look into a seamstress but I wouldn't expect it to be cheap here. 2 years ago I got straps shortened on a top (nothing fancy or difficult about it) and it cost $25. The top was only $50. Ha ha. Hemming pants costs $20. We installed the rod yesterday and hung the panels and they definitely need more width. Even if they are directly over the window/frame, light creeps through the sides. And it looks like it needs more width. The silk ones are really nice though and nice quality. Unfortunately, Pottery Barn screwed up and one panel, even though it says 96" is 84". Sigh. So no matter what, something has to go back which is going to involve extra shipping costs, etc. Since I have to go through that gong show, I could see if I can scrounge up enough to purchase more panels of what I already have, but if I can't put them up without being sewn together, that doesn't help me much either. WHY do they make panels so narrow? They are designing 2 panels to fit a 36" window? Our windows aren't even overly large for the room and they are wider than that. If they made them wider, they would still work on narrow windows but also work on wider windows. Comments (26)One more thing. I just got the new Cuddledown catalog today. I want to mention them because I've had their pillows and duvet for years. I've also been in their store in Maine. Plus, when my 20 year old duvet needed to be refilled with down, I was able to send it to them and they made the repair reasonably. So that's all to say that I have done business with them for a long time and I trust them. I also just bought a new bed pad from them and it's outstanding. Was very expensive but it has made a difference and should give me many years of service. Just noticed they have 350 thread count percale sheets with some special pricing. On the same page there are cotton waffle weave blankets. They have sales and I if I needed something I would watch for those and try to take advantage as I did on the bed pad....See MoreGreat customer service these days from...
Comments (32)I'm going to reiterate that Home Depot is not winning any customer loyalty from me!! It's the only hardware option I have nearby locally. Usually buy from them due to path of least resistance. So far my bad experiences have been: limited in store merchandise options that I like, shopping online to check availability before going to the store and then finding out that the online availability was not correct, ordering things from them and they never show up. This is not a reflection of the local employees, they are nice and good, but the corporation is not up to snuff IMHO. We are putting Home Depot on our "avoid if possible" list. Switching to the Menards next town down the road, and they also do contact less pick up and everyone in the store wears masks, and they also do home delivery. Just seems more "put together" overall and so far we've found things we like there, like a kitchen faucet, bathroom light fixtures . . . We still go to Home Depot for quick things we need mid-project, and I do find plants there I like sometimes, but we drive down to Menards at least once a month. If the pandemic wasn't still ongoing we'd go to Lowe's 45 min. away but we're limiting shopping trips both for economic and social distancing reasons. We have such a backlog of stuff at home to deal with we don't really need to go shopping anyway, this is not something we are doing just because of the pandemic, it suits where we are at now with our lives, wanting to focus on interacting with what we have now, not bringing more into the house . . . Edited to add that I had to wait 20 min. at HD to get a refund for the merchandise that never showed up. It was hardware cloth fencing. The whole time yahoos without masks going in and out and a ventilation system blowing on me with recirculated who knows what. My eyes were itching the whole rest of the day. Next visit I guess I will also have to wear protective eye coverings. Afterwards, the customer service person said they had the fencing in the store, and offered to give me a discount. I questioned her because I said the whole reason I had ordered the fencing is they didn't have it in the store. She again said, "We have it in the store." I went to that aisle because I also needed plant stakes and they were in the same aisle so what the heck. Had to walk through the whole store. And lo and behold, NO, they did not have the fencing and neither did they have the stakes. So quite a wasted trip, wasted time and in these days, wasted risk due to poor customer service. Quite the opposite of my last trip to Menards. I was going for contact-less pick-up but I didn't print my receipt because I thought I would be able to pull it up on my phone. Could not get cell service once at the store, but the folks at customer service printed it out for me. Meanwhile, everyone in store wearing masks, good ventilation, and they were offering you masks if you didn't bring one. Polite, efficient service and delivering in-person what they promised on their Web site....See Moremish524
