How to arrange a large 'square' family/dining room off kitchen.
Comments (3)During the planning stage we went back and forth several times with the direction of the vault. The porch outside the big glass doors is a gable and we played with the idea of having the vault run from left to right and through to the porch. We kept changing the proportions of the room to accommodate dining, seating areas etc. At the end we 'forgot' to change the dimensions back to 22 x 26. You look at the plans so much that you don't 'see them'. The room looks massive yet it is not long enough for seating and dining - and its too wide. I didn't notice it until the foundation was already poured. Originally we had planned that the room to the left of the main entrance would serve as a dining room. I was advised to put the dining table in the main room and so we made the original dining space smaller by adding space to the office. I'm old school and always liked a dining room and breakfast space in the kitchen. Now I'm building a very expensive house without either. Lesson: decide on the things that are important to you and stick to them. Ignore the advice of people who might live a different lifestyle than you....See MoreHow to furnish remodeled Living room
Comments (10)If this is your only social room, and you have a TV, decide what wall it needs to go on the place the sofa opposite.....get those two things in place and then you will see how much room you have for the the rest of the things needs in the room.......looks like TV can go on either side of the doorway to the dining room. So center your sofa, or sectional sofa on the wall between two windows on the longest wall in the room. The TV will go one either of the opposite walls. Start there and see what you think and what you need next in the room. The room is narrow, so concentrate on sleek lines for the sofa, and not the puffy 'leather' reclining sofas that everyone sells......too big and too big and too big for the room......please....See MoreHow to decorate a new home using my current decor and furnishings
Comments (23)I copied the photo of your rug to my photo program and sampled the colors in it. I then compared those colors with paint colors from Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams. The light gold of the background most closely matches SW 6374 Torchlight. The light brown was similar to BM's 2166-20 Caramel Latte. The green matched SW 7729 Edamame, and SW 2806 Rookwood Brown is similar to a taupe in the rug. Neither the coral or the dark red have any matches, and they would overwhelm a room in any event. What looked blue in the rug sampled as gray. These colors in your rug are muted by the small areas they occupy. They are more saturated when viewed by themselves. Below are approximate samples of the above colors. You should first of all check out these colors on the manufacturer's website in their virtual paint. Here is Benjamin Moore and here is Sherwin-Williams. Remember that you can choose a lighter version of these colors. For instance, SW 7726 Lemon Verbena is a lighter version of Edamame, and SW 6373 Harvester is a lighter version of Torchlight. Once you have narrowed the choices you should buy samples and paint on poster board. You can then set the poster boards against the walls you want to paint to see how the colors work. This is the only way to see if you like the colors enough to live with them. Otherwise you would be better off choosing neutrals....See MoreNeed advice decorating a new Craftsman home with current furnishings
Comments (8)I don't think you can go wrong with narrow builtins around the fireplace, under the windows. The space can't really be used in another way, and having storage is always a plus. Think carefully about whether you want closed or open storage, or a combination. I also think the soft green you had on your accent wall would look great in your new dining space. Greens always look good with wood. If the dining area has a lot of windows, you could use a deeper color. I'd keep the rest of the main spaces one neutral color. You can use the third option from your builder for a different bedroom color, which I think is always nice. I'd make a floorpan with actual dimensions, and measure all your large current furniture pieces. That will help you see whether or not they can fit in the spaces, or if you should sell them prior to the move. I wouldn't buy anything until after you're in. If your hutch can't fit in the dining area, you may be able to use it on the far side of your living space, across from the fireplace, in an entry, or another room....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
