I am not a layout expert at all. In the kitchen, it does look like you have room to make the peninsula area perpendicular to the rest of the cabinets instead of angled (bringing the length of cabinets along the wall out a little further). However, in looking at your house floor plan, I do have a comment about that. Your second and third bedrooms and closets are relatively small, yet you have that window seat area. It seems like that space could be better used in a few ways. You could: - make the bedrooms both several feet bigger, which would also enable the closets to be a little bugger - make your hall bath bigger with room for a double vanity Just a thought!

Thanks for keeping this thread alive! The title is no longer accurate, however, because we have discussed lots of options besides the original G-shape (which I think I decided would be too cramped, or people would feel trapped in there). Now there is a big shake-up: I think we are moving the stairs, which gives the room an entirely different shape. Here's the problem: there is no access to the basement from inside the house, just an outside bulkhead door. My husband plans to build his darkroom down there (he's a professional photographer), so we need inside stairs going down. We thought we were going to build them under the existing stairs going up, as in the plans above, but that would require a bunch of excavation and concrete pouring which would be very expensive. So, we came up with a different idea: build a new set of stacked stairs, one going up to the kids' bedrooms and one going down to the basement. We lose our kitchen table, but gain a large island. Our dining room is just a few steps away, so that's fine. We also lose a whole lot of windows, which would face north and look directly at another house, but would be our only direct light. The other windows look out to a mudroom and to a porch, so won't give a lot of light. I broke the rules and put the DW between the sink and stove because that would give me more counter space between the sink and stove. I don't think I want the sink or a cooktop in the island. The contractors who I hope will be the ones doing the job have thrown out several different ideas for stairs; space is tight and most of the ideas were discarded as unworkable. At their suggestion, we decided to consult an architect, who will come to the house next week. By my husband's description over the phone, he thought the current plan (in the picture below) should work.

I wonder, if you move the pantry door down a foot or so, you could move the range down too, giving you more prep space between range and sink. Doing this also makes the cabinets between fridge and pantry shallower, but still useful. In my kitchen, and in the two I grew up in, the DW is tucked between the sink and peninsula. I find it SO convenient! When I open my silverware drawer, it is right above the DW so I barely have to move to put the flatware away. The dishes go right above (yes, it's an older house with cabinets above the peninsula). The only thing that's not convenient is that the open door blocks the trash cabinet under the peninsula. Ugh. Be sure you face a cabinet or even better drawers on the dining side of the peninsula to use that corner for napkins, salt and pepper, placemats, pens and the crossword. In my picture, even though you didn't ask, I flipped the hall closet to back up to the bedroom. This gives a "passage" across the house, for a larger living room: 2 more feet for free. and from the LR instead of seeing a closet, you could see artwork. I flipped the bathroom, too, so it wasn't in full view from the rest of the house. It's just an experiment, maybe you don't want to lose the foot of closet space or the nook for a little console table between closet and kitchen door.

First I'd do Ikea before I'd do Cabinets.com. Do lots of research. If you want comments on the layout, post what they came up with with room dimensions.
