Painting kids' rooms for staging? Or leave as kids's rooms?
Comments (12)I'm late to the conversation, but I'm glad you are leaving the room the colors it is. I went through this with my dd two years ago. She was almost six and had picked out the bedding, curtains, and pink wall color herself. She was really upset that her room was to be changed. It wasn't worth stressing her out any more than a move already does. At the stager's suggestion, I took down the pink curtains and replaced them with white. I switched out the bedding for a more nuetral color that went with the garden theme of the room. Dd's stuff (with her permission) that wasn't used for staging went into a box for the new house. When we walked through the house with the new owner, she complimented the room. It was the only room in the house that she complimented. IMO, it helped sell the house. I think if your rooms look magazine worthy, then leaving them as is, is fine. If they are just a hodge podge and a mix of stuff, it is better to repaint or stage so that it looks more appealing. I have seen some kid's rooms that made me cringe because everything clashed or looked like it had been thrown together with no thought of what worked....See MoreGallery Update: Kids' Rooms/Teens/Guest Rooms

Comments (85)Oh, good grief! Anything can be taken out of context and to the worst degree! I’ve purposely avoided this thread after I initially posted, as some posters made it sound like any parent who helped decorate this kid’s dorm room was crushing that child’s own creativity “Mommy-Dearest-like”. In retrospect, I’m sure there are parents like that. And, yes, some of those initially featured pics of rooms are so incredibly unpractical. BUT, there are so many more, like us, where daughters have grown up learning from mothers who are very good at decorating, and they are absorbing and enjoying it, too. They have their own likes and dislikes, which are encouraged and respected. BUT, they still need and want help with storage issues in those minuscule shared dorm rooms, lighting ideas, and a lot of other ideas to consider. It irritates the heck out out of me that some immediately paint the worst scenario when someone (Me) says, yes I did help my daughter decorate her dorm room. No, it was not some impractical designer room. No, it did not make her friends there hate her or her room. But, yes, it was overseen by DD and her roommate with the colors and art they wanted and chose. We mothers did, though, know what and where to find the storage and lighting that would facilitate the very best use of that minimal space. And, we did it at our daughters’ and with our daughters’ blessings. In closing, there are probably as many normal, happy mom-daughter collaborations as there are non/collaborations. Maybe I’m in the minority, having had a great, fun relationship with my own daughter her entire life. I consider it a blessing, but one that takes work. My own daughter has learned and absorbed so much interior design creativity from me over the years. She could easily make it her career if she chose. And, we love trading ideas still. But, even at age five, I allowed her to make the final design decisions with her own personal spaces. Not all decorator mothers are “Mommy Dearest monsters”....See MoreKids Bath Makeovers
Comments (11)Technically you may be able to do tile on the bath sub floor (without an extra layer of subfloor added) by using a special uncoupling membrane, one brand is Schluter DITRA you may have seen, bright orange 1/8” plastic waffle on a roll. Per Schluter it goes directly over 16” or 19.2” O.C. (on center) joist spacing with single-layer OSB or plywood subfloor for ceramic and porcelain tile installation. The traditional way (and maybe the only way the tile guy may be willing to do it and warranty his work) is to beef up the floor thickness for stiffness with either a second layer of plywood or tile backer board. There will still be a level change at the door threshold because tile + thinset + uncoupling membrane is thicker than vinyl. Normally I would say forget it, don’t upgrade the floor to tile until you are ready to overhaul the bathroom, slap a sheet product on the floor and be done for now. But in my own house there was the identical “problem” in a budget 80s bathroom with vinyl floor & plastic unit tub, ugly vanity, ugly brassy faucets. I wasn’t up for gutting the entire bathroom so did exactly what you are proposing: replace vinyl with tile on floor, update tub & sink faucets, throw in a toto toilet that works, hide the unit tub with a shower curtain until a future renovation and be done. That was +/-20 years ago! Is it my favorite bathroom in the house - no way, but the floor and faucets were a big Improvement. The faucets looked like yours & were relatively easy to switch out but YMMV....See MoreMrs Pete
