Thanks Kudzu9--yes, you're absolutely right. I'd have to lose that beautiful tapered edge...but I guess it's a lesser evil. I may just replace the entire top, but I want to try a couple repair experiments beforehand.

Eero Saarinen is the creator of the tulip table. He also created tulip chairs to match. I totally hear what you said that you didn’t want the matching plastic chairs, but, just for fun, I’ll post a couple pics of them. With colorful cushions, they look retro and Jetsons. But my favorite chairs are the Eero Saarinen “Executive chairs” (the version that is armless so it is not bulky). No plastic either. The legs are also offered in different woods or in chrome. Now the real ones are exhorbitantly expensive. But you can find imitations that are pretty nice for less money. The cherry red is the classic Eero Saarinen look, but they come in many colors.
