Stumped with design plan

I need help deciding how to finish out my bathroom remodel. This is a basement bath that is accessible to a mother-in-law suite and a fun movie room. The movie room will have a 1920’s vibe. I was trying out the mixed metals but I’m not sure if I am liking it. I was hoping to do black and gold like my new light fixture and change out the handles on the vanity to gold. I decided to stick with the black faucet since the gold one was a bit too bright. I still need to decide what to do with the walls. I was hoping to do two different colors or wall paper on the upper half. My family thinks that would be too busy. I want this to have a moody speakeasy vibe. I don’t want this to be just the same old same old boring bathroom. I’m even thinking of a darker than usual paint color.
The hall way that moves to the bathroom is the blue on the wall next to the trim. I was thinking of keeping it the same color. What’s your thoughts? I’m not sure if I am keeping the back splash that is there. It’s not clued to the wall as of yet. I was evening thinking of going straight up with wood that would match the color of the cabinet. And then place a gold frame on the wood piece. And thoughts. The photo in the comments is my inspiration idea for the mirror. Any suggestions?

This is my inspiration for the wall above the sink but the wood would go all the way to the ceiling.

If your not going to have it grinded down, understandable, because it is expensive... you should at least get some 1inch x 12 inch drill bits and drill holes strategically around the stump and then use stump rot potasium nitrate, urine (seriously..), manure, or other organic materials... in about 2 years the whole thing will be crumbling apart. The more ideal way is to put kerosine in the holes and burn it, but it's too close to those other trees and probably your house for you to do that. There are innumerable ways this could be played with, but I'm just trying to show you an idea of simple, straightforward geometry for the deck without any funky connections or gimmicks. The "octagonal" format lends itself to transitioning space between rectilinear architecture and curvilinear landscape. In this case, the dining area is one level down. With such a concept--and careful working of the grade--you could eliminate the need for a railing around the dining area and not have it seem obstructive of the yard view. Naturally, it could all be built as one level if that were preferred and details would change accordingly. Low, built-in seating flanking the hot tub could protect the deck edge yet not obstruct view. The idea of deck/patio combination is still viable. Karin explained how you could get a feel for how things would seem by mocking them up. It's the best way. Bright string or somesuch run at the proper level would be an easy way to create a realistically placed edge of something. After exploring it some, I find the "kitchen that allows you to face the yard while working at it" has the down side of being obstructive of the yard from the house view so not worth the trade-off in my estimation. A possible way around it is a larger deck. Another thought about it is a kitchen island that rolls about for use and getting it out of the way when not in use. Maybe you're content with it as is, where is. I'd bump the walk farther from the garage. I'm not working with any scale--just eyeball--but the planting space there seems too tight.

Synlight, you're going to love your new home. Even basic builder homes have some pretty nice stuff these days. I actually like the bottom row of counter samples significantly better than the top, and they definitely seem more sophisticated to me. As for dark-light, it's wide open to the rest of the living areas. I'd try not to vary too much from the light-dark balance in the rest of the area so it all comes together nicely as a whole, no big dark block weighing down a corner of a mostly light room, say. My first thought on how to make it as functional as possible is in the answer to where you will find yourself doing most of your preparation for cooking; for myself I always plan around that since it will become the center of my kitchen, everything else relating to that. You have lots of possibilities. Your stove is far from the sink and the nice expanses of counter over there but has good work space on each side. The island doesn't strike me as a probable place for main prep, but it is a possibility, also between sink and fridge, and less likely to left of the sink, although you certainly have a lot of space there. You probably will also do lunches and snacks and that might take place in a second area, perhaps on the island close to the fridge or counter by the fridge? BTW, did you mean you'd ask about switching the stove to the fridge area? I think that'd be good if you could as you could work close to the sink and not have to cross traffic with hot food and liquids. If you can't switch the stove and fridge, how about asking them NOT to fasten the island down and doing that yourselves later? Or maybe just being there and telling them just where you want it after experimenting? There's probably not much room for shifting it, but even inches might make a happy difference as you move from sink to stove areas. I.e., whether you use it a whole lot or not, you'd like it to obstruct that path as little as possible.

Thank you for your comments. Beverly27 - I agree totally that there is no comparison between the two rugs. I was expecting some flaws, but the largest flaw was bigger than the size of a pencil eraser, with just foundation and no pile. I didn’t know if it could cause problems down the road, and couldn’t get it looked at before the return period was up. I’m still shopping and hope to find a rug similar to the first rug. Interesting about the tribes! zorroslw - Glad you like the planter. I like sectionals, but in my room the sectional would be in front of only part of the bow window. It might make things feel out of balance? That’s why I planned to use a sofa and chairs. (The price in the photo of the sofa was not the sale price; the sofa would be a few hundred dollars less). chijim - Thanks for the ideas from the Candice Olson room. I was all onboard thinking about the movie room then realized you also said mother-in-law suite and presume this bath would be used by them. So I would be of a mind to be a bath that would be great even for older eyes. There is already a lot of movement in your various tiles in the shower so they get to be the star (no pun intended) and the rest of the bath should be calmer to support them. I would suggest using one of the three lighter colors (if it will work with the light grey in the tile and the marble look tile. Is your vanity black or dark blue? It's very pretty.

I like the wood accent in your inspiration photo but notice that the rest of that room is very zen. I think it doesn't fit with the vibe of your bath. I think a great alternative would be a gold rimmed mirror, a good place for you to mix your metals. It might be a challenge but if you could match that deep burnished color in your light fixture that it would be beautiful. I agree you could do the vanity pulls in gold, and altogether you would have a very glam space. A framed 1920s movie poster would tie it in to your movie room very nicely.

You have a lot of tiles in place, and already dramatic dark fixtures. Don't try to make every element a star! I suggest the second-darkest of what i presume are paint chips on the shower curb in your first photo, used on all the walls. That should be enough to give drama without adding too much more chaos. I'd consider regular glass for the shower too.

You already have too much with the 3 different tiles and the 3 that are porcelain with the natural material sink. Do NOT add more. A bathroom is not a 3 ring circus where every ring is a different act

I'm all for fun, but you are already over the fun limit.

change that curb top to a plain solid surface. It should not be tiled as you expose the surface to leaking . You are gong to make your MIL dizzy, as well .

Plain clear glass for the shower, black matte handle and hinges

Roaring twenties? Add theater, movie posters from that time.

My MIL no longer lives with us but it is an extra bedroom that my husband will be using as his man cave. This mirror is definitely fun. I will have to take a look at it.

@Jenny the MIL suite is now used as a men’s den/ man cave. But for resale purposes it is considered a MIL suite (a full 5th bedroom). So downstairs it’s a movie room, this bath, and a man’s cave. I think I like the gold trim mirror idea too. The vanity is a really dark charcoal (almost black).

I see lots of these bathrooms in new construction and flips with a bunch of different tile, and then a plain semigloss paint color, and plain everything else, and I think it looks like they used leftover tile from a number or projects rather than planned a multi-layered, multi patterned bathroom.

I think once you get to a certain point you have to Commit to the excess.
