Yellow jackets: my experience in getting rid of them.
Comments (5)Yellow jackets are beneficial insect predators in my garden, so I only kill them if their nest is in an area where they are likely to sting me or my grandchildren. Since I try to avoid the use of toxic chemicals, I looked for an alternative solution. This turned out to be a shop vacuum, with the nozzle lodged in place just below the entrance hole. It catches them both leaving & returning, and the noise angers them - so it catches even more. I place the nozzle at night & turn the switch on, so I can plug in the extension cord from a safe distance to start the vacuum. After running for a whole day, nearly every worker in the nest was caught. This usually kills the nest, since the majority of the larvae will starve without the workers....See MoreHow to get rid of yellow jackets
Comments (141)Had bad yellow jacket infestation in a rotting fire wood pile.we didn't know it until it was to late... 23 ouches for me and 4 for my 9yr old daughter.Needless to say organic or not I gave them the gasoline and match method. The pile burnt 4 days. Dug thru and found the hive along with the dead queen... A week or so later I noticed a few buzzing around the remains... They were burrowing in and flying larvae away. I couldn't believe it... After a 4 day fire and a week later the larvie were still alive. Called in the pro's. We found out they were western yellowjackets here in the east. They are now gone. But not forgotten. Do yourself a favor and call the pro's....See MoreCan you tell a yellow jacket from a bee by sight?
Comments (5)If they're in the ground, they're not likely to be honeybees (especially in your part of the country). I'd say, get rid of 'em! For photos, go to Google (I'm sure the same would work for Yahoo and other search engines), click on the "Images" selection above the search box, type in 'yellowjacket' and search; then do the same for the word 'honeybee' (make sure you're still in the "Images" selection). As they say, one picture is worth a thousand words....See MoreWasps and yellow jackets on yard long beans?? Problem??
Comments (13)Thanks cindy-eatonton, happyday and zeedman! I was able to harvest some beans tonight! DH and I went out a little after 9PM when it was completely dark -- the wasps and yellow jackets were completely gone!! We looked carefully with flashlights just to be sure. The neighbors already think we are nutty when we water our EarthBoxes in the rain. They will have no doubt when they see us harvesting beans by flashlight and auto headlights.... zeedman, I have observed the wasps when they frequent these yardlong beans and they indeed are docile. Normally when there are wasps around our yard they are quite belligerent. The nectar from the yardlongs would be nice to have in spray form. Thanks again, DL...See MoreAl Ro
