Good source for reclaimed wood beams?
Comments (8)We took out a load-bearing wall and needed to put in LVLs for the load needed. Our contractor then covered the LVLs with great looking wood that will be stained next week, to match barstools and cabinet backs. I had originally wanted a reclaimed beam but could not go that way because of specs . . . so you could also go the route of an engineered beam and cover it - and get it finished to look rustic. I'll post pics when ours is stained - right now it looks like a great lovely wooden beam up there. Good luck!...See MoreBest headboards for reading in bed - OT
Comments (24)Interesting re-reading this thread! I still use a satin covered boomerang pillow. My new higher pillowtop mattress covers most of the headboard now though. This is a shame as it is made of Norwegian knotty pine wood which matches a vintage dressing table but the top is barely visible after the pillows are stacked against it. I would get it made taller by inserting some wood into the posts at the bottom but I continually need the bedframe. No more sleeping on the floor these days as I wouldn't be able to get up!...See MoreReclaiming Neglected Garden Bed
Comments (4)Yep, there's room for quite a bit more soil! How much you might need to add is dependent on what you might want to grow - you need to match the soil depth to the type of plants and what they require rather than some nebulous video recommendations (and most of the gardening videos I see online are just cr*p anyway). Deep rooted crops - potatoes, carrots, parsnips, etc. - need deep loose soil conditions. Greens and radishes can take much shallower soils but most other veggies like a medium depth. I;d consider 8" a minimum....deeper is better :-) Ideally, raised bed soil should incorporate some of the inground soil - at least loosen it up sufficiently so that deeper root plants can access easily without stunting growth. Raised bed or garden planting soil that you can purchase bagged will work, but bulk soil will be significantly cheaper if you can get it. I'd also consider adding a bag or two of compost or composted manure to get the soil biology working actively. And be sure to clear out everything before mixing in new soil or planting anything, otherwise you will be dealing with weeds in those beds from now on. I would do so manually rather than smothering as a) it is much faster; b) more thorough; and c) you will be able to loosen the underlying soil as well. Wet the bed throughly first - it will make the grubbing out of weeds and grasses much easier....See MoreReclaimed wood mantel attached to brick veneer
Comments (6)You may need to pop off a row of bricks to find the studs with a stud finder. It's a prefab fireplace, so there is definitely wood framing in the wall....See MoreS M
